  • So effectively $110….Man…I am tempted, so tempted…who is in charge of the warranty, though? In-store, I presume..?

    • Hi jennkei, yes we are responsible for warranty so faulty item needs to be sent back to us. :)

      • Hmm, who would pay shipping then? :P Possible to drop by Lane Cove office as well?

  • What is the benefit of eSATA compared with USB or 1394, faster?

    • Hi excite, yes eSATA has transfer speed upto 3Gbps so that is about 6 times faster than USB2.0 but your computer need to have eSATA port.

      • … or if you have some spare internal SATA ports just use a SATA to E-SATA cable adapter with bracket http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.9281

        • Thanks for the link. I ended up buying this(see below)internal card reader so that It gives me access to an Esata port at the front of the pc. I have a tower box under the desk and it's difficult to get to the rear slots.
I needed a card reader anyway.

          • @bender: Welcome :-) Had not seen the unit you linked to before, looks very nice!

    • The eSATA downside should also be mentioned - shorter cable length. You can only go up to 1-2M, inclusive of any internal cable if your system doesn't have eSATA ports and you need to use a bracket.

As long as that's not a problem for you, it's a no-brainer. At current drive speeds read/write can be more than twice as fast over eSATA compared to USB2.0/FW400.

  • would firewire still be faster…?
as I don't have a eSATA port on the mac
as I have seen 750gb firewire drive for ~$150 delivered

    • Firewire is slower than eSATA. The fastest current version of Firewire is 800 which can handle up to 800Mbits/sec where as eSATA can handle up to 3Gbits/sec.

      • thanks for that
