        • UI just isn't as performant as I'd hoped. Seems to be more picky about placement for a good network signal than other devices. Not a great latency experience with Xbox game streaming and GeForce Now, however to be fair I am only able to do Xbox streaming right now thanks to sideloading the mobile app. Runs perfect on my phone, so don't see why it should be any different. Inconsistent voice input methods just like every other device.. I just want to hold the talk button and dictate to any text input.

These the biggest annoyances to me off my head, I'm sure they won't deter most. It does achieve what I bought it for - offer a better homescreen experience than Samsung

This is also great as a general media player streaming from your local file/upnp share. Just install VLC and youre all set.

    • Kodi works great as well.

      • sorry, but what is kodi in simple words ?

        • +1

It’s a media centre - capable of playing and organising music, videos, movies, photos etc. It’s main appeal is it’s very customisable, and very powerful. It has many add ons (like apps) that allow a lot more functionality.

  • I like this as you can use Firetv remote as a spare :)

    • The signal path is unreal now with HDMI-CEC and eARC

  • Is it possible to install VPN it?

    • +1

      Yep.

      • Cheers mate!
is there any reliable online guide for it? I would definitely buy this if I can get vpn installed.

    • +1

Yes. I watch Netflix from other regions through my VPN (windscribe) app.

  • Excellent thanks for posting the deal OP, was after one of these and it's coming on Friday.

I've got both Chromecast with Google TV and the Firestick 4K Max and prefer the Firestick. They are very similar devices when it comes to performance, both have 2GB RAM with 8GB storage.
Benefits with Chromecast is that the full app store is there although you can sideload on the Firestick
Benefits with Firestick is the remote, it works better with the TV, and the TV remote works perfectly with the Firestick. Firestick also supports Wifi 6. You can also use the TV USB to power the Firestick whereas the Chromecast requires AC power.

The 4K Max was $59 all of December 2021.

Install a launcher for a custom home page and get rid of the adverts.

I bought one a couple months ago and recently took it on holiday overseas. Connected to the TV and used free wifi. So easy to connect and use.

  • Does anyone know whether VPN works on this please?

    • +1

Yes, easiest way is the vpn has an app that you can download and turn on.

  • -1

Good for those already with echo devices but if you have Google homes and want the Play store for more apps, its worth spending a bit more for Chromecast with Google tv

  • Can these be jail broken or third party emulstors played on them? Can it do n64 playsation and dreamcast?

    • +1

Yes, definitely. Either with RetroArch or seperate emu apps.

  • Can anyone do a quick comparison between the Apple TV 4K and this one?

    • +4

      This is a lot cheaper.

    • +1

The Apple TV4K (or NVIDEA Shield for that matter) are more capable and superior. More than just a streamer.
They are also 4-6 times the price.

      Not the same product.

      • What does the AppleTV do that is so superior?

        • They do a lot more than be a streamer.
Whether that is worth the price difference is another story.

  • Can you get Freeview on this?
    Don’t have an aerial antenna!

    • +1

Should get the 7, 9 and 10 catch up apps

    • ABC/2/7/9/10/SBS apps are all there but the best way to watch FTA is to sideload Kodi and then the Aussie IPTV addon. Needs some tinkering but once done, runs a treat. I like being able to select different states and get their local ABC/2/7/9/10/SBS channels.

      • That's cool, is that the stream from the apps, or is it a direct FTA feed. Thinking for footy etc.

  • Does this have support for ultra wide monitors ? such as 21:9 aspect ratio ?

  • Mine stays at $79. Not getting the $20 discount mentioned :(

    • Same. :(

How do you get the additional $20 off?

    • Do you have prime?

  • can you get Optus sport through this?

  • If you sideload apps is it a polished user experience or feel janky? and will need to be manually updated etc. If this will require regular tinkering to keep working I think I would be better off with google TV and the more complete app store

    • Agreed. Out of the box, the firestick needs work. When sideloading apps, their icons don't appear and that requires a separate launcher. Side loaded apps won't auto- update, which can be a real pain when you sit down to watch a footy game and Kayo won't open. The firestick is a gem if you like to tinker, otherwise pay the extra $$ got a Google TV which just works out of the box.

      • here's another perspective: if you just need Prime video, Netflix, Youtube, Disney+ then you'll be fine with a Firestick.

        • Binge is the main one it's missing for me

        • I was answering the previous poster's question around the experience when sideloading apps. There are limitations that the firestick has (keeping in mind it's an android device that's been skinned). I love my firesticks, but not offering Binge & Kayo & Kodi natively is something people should be made aware of … as is the ability to sideload these apps & the process needed to update them.

  • bought 1 at JB a few weeks back for 59 also

  • Bought one from Bing Lee last Saturday for $49, seems to have gone back to the original price now.

    • +2

I believe the Bing Lee $49 firestick was the 4K (non max) version, model number B0872Z1TBP, as opposed to this one, being the B08MR37WXM.

  • along with all the other features previously mentioned it offers bluetooth to headphones/earbuds.

  • Don't know why I bought it, I already have the NVIDIA Shield TV 4K HDR Streaming MP besides old GCC.

Ah well, don't think, buy first.

    • Well done fellow OzBargainer. You are a worthy member!

  • We are a fairly hitech house with Nvidia sheild, Alexa etc etc . My wife cant use any of it….. LOL…… She like the firestick 4K max I got before Christmas as she does'nt have issues using it….. Its pretty easy straight out of the box…Even picked up our Amazon account when it was first plugged in and fitted itself into our Alexa network without prompting…

  • Got this a few days ago. I was having trouble setting up the remote to work with my TV (Linsar 65" LS65UHDSM21).
Finally got it working today by using the "Chiq" brand instead.
    Thanks @rokoz
