Do You Keep Your Tech Product Boxes?

I'm doing a bit of decluttering at the moment and I've noticed there's a sizeable pile of tech product boxes laying around the house - ranging from smaller boxes for Philips Hue to bigger ones like monitor boxes.

  • no plan to flip them in the near future
  • most of the things aren't likely to require RMA in the future, if I do need a box for it, there's a constant stream of Amazon's anyways

Thanks

I used to, but now I think it's a waste of space. I'll keep packing for Apple devices for resale/gifting, and also the box my TV came with because I don't know how else to safely transport a TV.

I keep my mobile, motherboard, graphics card and PSU box with accessories inside my PC case box. The rest is recycled.

I only keep the ones I'm actually using and plan to resell. I also keep the receipts in the boxes if I need them for RMA. I sell anything I'm not using, and throw away anything that is too bulky, or not worth anything.

For a new computer build, I keep all boxes for about a month just in case something goes wrong, after that I generally keep motherboard and GPU boxes and recycle/repurpose the rest. Motherboard box to keep random cables/screws (and previously manuals and receipts, but now all digital) from all the parts of my build. GPU box just in case in needs RMA or to sell, just because they offer the best protection with its cut to size foam etc.

Phone boxes I keep, either to pass on along with the phone to family when I upgrade or to store original accessories and sim door keys. As I wireless charge my phone and have a multiport charger and 2-in-1 cables at my desk, original chargers tend to stay unused in its packaging.

Monitor boxes I don't keep for whatever reason. When I last moved houses, I just had them laying on my car seats with towels/other things to stop them from sliding around.

I keep some of them, only because I move around every few years for work reason, and it helps with packing for stuffs like computer monitor.

  • When I saw xbox, PS, Apple boxes selling for absurd prices on Scamtree and Fartbook, I keep them all now. Lego boxes are the same.

When I sell a phone or a console, people will pay a much much higher premium for a device that comes in a virtually unmarked original box. Just bainv ght box can sometimes net you another $100 or so. People will pay crazy prices for cardboard boxes.

  • Depends on the product, also if It is a good size and I can repurpose it. Kept my Lenovo laptop box. Was useful as had to return the laptop for repairs twice and had proper padding. Also helps if you have spare room, eg, under the house.

yes, but not massive boxes, it makes reselling at a later date easier and I keep the receipts in them also, in my cupboard I have a PS5 box, Xbox box, Phone, tablet, smartwatch, and wireless charger boxes

Keep the monitor cases when moving.

Of course keep. When i buy second hand and it has its box etc i know the owner is at least caring.
Not some bogan open then throw away the box.
Usually items without box will have bad conditions. You can tell the owner personalities

I'm working towards trying to write the date of purchase on the boxes, along with the warranty period (if not already printed on the box).

That way, when they're out of warranty, and if I can safely transport it without packaging, I can feel comfortable about disposing of it.

    Because otherwise, I hoard them.

I keep the packaging from more expensive items, purely because I sell them on when I want to upgrade. If it's an item that I know will have very little value when I'm done with it, then I get rid of the packaging (or reuse to ship other items).

Think tablets, phones, camera gear, audio equipment…that's what I keep boxes for.

I saw Lego mentioned above, but for bigger sets that can add quite a lot to the shipping (unless you fold the box up, which kind of misses the point). Last Lego item I sold was one of the rarer of my personal items that went for more than I paid - and I did not provide the retail box with it. Lego packaging is usually pretty wasteful - heaps of void space in them. I wish Lego wouldn't do that.

  • From my past experience, PS and Lego worth keeping, someone wanted my PS3 empty box for $30, rest is for recycle bin after the warranty period is over usually.

Game consoles and Apple products are generally worth more if sold with the original box.
Monitors and TVs are useful to ensure safe packaging.
My Alienware laptop has a nice box which I keep in case I want to resell

    • Except for Sony tv box, once you pop it's over lol

Usually keep them until the warranty expires then they get dumped.

    I keep everything because I'm a hoarder

  • I keep boxes of stuff I don't use frequently, so I can put them back in for storage.

I used to keep them - but I had an epiphany when I had a room full of boxes, now I absolutely love throwing anything out / recycling anything I can, I almost enjoy it as much as the new product. I like simplifying my life and not having stuff.

    • I wish I could do that!

Boxes are so much fun to play with. Better than what was in them!

      You a cat?

  • My reasons for keeping some boxes are mundane at best - they can make great organisers (looking at you Apple and your fancy sleekness) and I don't have to spend more money to buy plastic boxes! Downside if they get wet - then I wait eagerly for the next sturdy packaging to enter my home.

  • Nope, they take up space which is at a premium here. I could probably flatten them to fit them in somewhere but I can't be bothered with that.

  • I like to keep my boxes, especially if I may need to use the warranty (not that you get the box back in some cases), once the tech product has passed it's warranty, I'm more inclined to throw the box out.

  • I keep boxes for anything I will resell as it always gets me a better price. I also keep boxes for anything that will need to be safely transported, such as a TV.

I also keep other boxes for a smaller amount of time in case of a warranty return.

  • I only keep bodes for expensive items or items that will have a lot of resale potential, sometimes I really like the packaging of a box and keep it too, but otherwise it gets thrown.

Even for a second hand TV that you buy 8 years old, you just wrap it in a few towels and chuck it in the back of your car, keeping boxes isn't required for everything.

  • I do and I hate that I do it.

  • Yeah, some boxes I'll keep like my GPU box or my phone box; things that aren't really replaced often, or aren't cheap.

If it's a box from a $30 set of wireless earbuds, nah. If it's something expensive, yeah.

  • I probably keep more than I should. Store them in the roof space though so outta sight, outta mind.

  • Don't keep the boxes, I actually frequently buy boxes for the product (camera lenses) in order to get more money, it's a crazy world.
