Live Mud crabs are pretty great, but with prices at Fish market $60/kg being so close to Live Lobster at $80/kg at that price I cannot justify buying it over Lobster despite the juicer meat flavour. I was looking for a place to buy Mud Crabs for cheap for Singapore Chilli crab and stumbled onto Fishme. I bought 4 1kg crabs last time and I even got 1 1.2kg crab and they all weighed over 1kg! They tasted great and were very lively when they were delivered!

Singapore Chilli Crab Recipe

Mud Crabs $36.5/kg($42/1.15kg) $38(1kg) SOLD OUT

Australian Shore Crabs per kg (Frozen)

Why is this a bargain? Historic best price was $12.50/kg. Crab is a rare treat and is rarely below $30/kg. These are a delicacy in the Philipines and China, who would have thought fresh seafood could be so cheap? Actually, these crabs are frozen. Since they are an invasive species we cannot sell live shore crabs. By eating these you are not only saving money on exotic and relatively unknown seafood but also doing our native wildlife a favour! Looking for something a bit different? Shore crabs are commonly used in Asian dishes or European crab soups such as bisque. We bring you Australian shore crabs at the most affordable price in Australia.

Australian Shore Crabs come:
Frozen / ready-to-thaw
Raw / ready-to-cook
About 10-12 per kilogram
Sold by the kilogram
Product of Australia

Recipes
Boiled Shore Crab: Simple
Crispy Fried Shore Crab(My favorite very crunchy)

You understand that seafood such as prawns etc are just underwater insects, right?
Well it's not quite true but it is half true.

    • I must be blind as all I see is a crab.

  • Live Lobster is about $45 per kg in Perth

    • -1

Yeah in Sydney they are usually $90/kg they are probably WA Lobsters hence the difference in price

    • There is a lobster farm in Perth, which may influence that

      so $7.50 / kg

  • Just out of curiosity, how do they manage to tie up the crab claws when crabs are live?

    • +3

They hold it by the back of the carapace and tie it up with a spool of string

      • +1

  • Any feedback on the shore crabs? never seen anybody sell those before.

    • +1

if you are a big fan of hairy crab (Chinese mitten crab), these shore crabs taste is similar, to some extent.

    • +1

I second zsh very similar to Chinese mitten crab and can sometimes be found as deep fried tiny crabs in this species at fish and chip shops

  • whilst mud crab is awesome it's pretty much pointless unless it's 1.2+ kg. Not worth the effort and money. 1.3kgs sold out.

There's a few restaurants around sydney north in the .*woooo suburbs that do awesome mudcrab for similar pricing plus sauce/noodles/egg yolk etc.

If you don't mind the health violations and covid possibility…

    • any recommendations? I know why in Strathfield that did $50 for 1kg mud crab

      pics look the same though.

      Is this a scam ?

  • How much meat would you get from 1kg of mud crabs? 300g?

  • For those wanting to know how best to kill live crabs, here's a good guide.
TLDR, stun them by briefly placing them in the freezer (30mins-1hr) then spike the 2 nerve centres while insensible.

    • -2

I heard most chefs do this method:

      pull flap
      knife to the face
      flip of top shell
      rip out gills and guts
knife to cut it in veritical
      knife to cut it horizontal

      Then cook

Super quick. No need to freeze the knife to the face stuns them. 👍🏻

      • I do the freezing more to slow them down…

When do you wash the shell?! eat it with the mud that's been accumulated for years?

        • scrub the top only, it's got tamale inside, eat that

  • How many Shore Crabs per kg? I know those crabs can be extremly tiny, sometimes.

    • 10-12 per kg
