[eBay Plus] Westinghouse Twin Induction Cooktop $169.15 Delivered @ Bing Lee eBay

80
PLUHGFS

I've been looking to get an induction stove and a portable cooktop (can just plug in) seems like a good way to trial it out. Westinghouse gets good reviews from Choice. I was originally looking at a single hob but I feel like this will be simpler having just one thing to plug in.

Excludes: Northern Territory, QLD Far North, QLD Regional, WA Regional, WA Remote, PO Box

$170 looks to be a pretty good price compared with what's out there. Coupon code gives 15% off with eBay plus, compared to original price of $199.

I think IKEA single hob is $50.

    In case anyone is interested.

  • +2

Might be worth noting that since it's powered with one plug, the left side can only do a max of 1400W and the right one 1000W.

The $59 Ikea one can do 2000W. If your breaker will allow 17-20A you can run both at full power.

    • I was wondering this - how much of a problem do you think this would be? I feel like it's likely to be enough for most applications, although I can see the appeal of 2000W!

      • +2

It depends on what you're cooking I suppose. If you're doing pots of pasta you'd probably want all the power you can get! :)

BTW I did a comparison test boiling water with an electric kettle, an induction cooker, and a gas stove. Turns out electric heating was cheaper than gas.

        • Is that $0.0273? I was always told electric was super expensive! 🤯

          • +2

@EchoNoob: Gas is no longer cheap as it used to be.

With induction stoves and reverse cycle heating, etc, there is little reason to have gas connected to the house. Save on the service fees, and especially so if you have solar panels on the roof.

            • @placard: So true - the saving on the connection fees is massive.

          • @EchoNoob:

            Is that $0.0273?

            Yup!

I was always told electric was super expensive!

Yeah that's what I heard too, so I was a little surprised. I guess it's because the labour involved in refilling and delivering tanks of gas to homes pushes the cost up. It's much cheaper to use 9kg BBQ cylinders that you pick up yourself.

            • @eug: I know of people who had mains gas and want to disconnect, but still enjoy their gas stove, so they had a plumber change it over to LPG, then run the pipe to outside, and they use 9kg bottles for the stovetop. 9kg bottles just on the stove lasts ages too.

    • Lower wattage might be an advantage. I've had the portable IKEA hob for years and anything under setting '5' (out of 9) is on/off. I would consider 5 medium to medium high. Would a 1000W get down to low to low medium without changing to on/off?

2000W is great and all but I'm sure I could still boil spaghetti at 5. I would prefer to have a setting for simmer and have to wait a little longer for it to get to temp.

Single for 81.90 if you're still considering

    • +3

Choice rates this model number 1 in their portable induction tests (Oct21).

2nd place was actually the Ikea one for $59, and they were the only two tested that got the Choice Recommended/tick of approval.

Getting your linked one for $81.90 delivered, considering its probably the best one to buy, is the best option imo. Thanks for linking.

      • I'm now considering getting 2x the singles, but maybe worried that the higher wattage means more cycling on/off. On the other hand, singles could make it easier to do two things at once, I'm worried they may not fit alongside each other on a double one. Maybe order 2x1 singles as well and then return the one I like least? madness.

Choice's review didn't clarify whether it cycles or not, but ease of use at both low and high temps scored very high (95% on each).
I think also because you can apparently set the actual wattage or temperature level on the display is a good sign as well.
The test for low heat setting score simmered a white sauce. I would imagine if it cycled on and off too aggressively it would have definitely burned the sauce?

Anyway I've ordered one, as I want to use for camping and get rid of gas altogether.

    • Brought one, then tested our pots with a magnet, since they are 18/10 stainless it's not going to work. :(

  • Do these have an inverter or do they cycle on/off when on low heat settings?

    • My query too. This induction stoves that cycle on/off full power are a pain to use. Very hard to simmer something.

I wish there was a portable one that just maintained a lower heat setting rather than just doing full power for a second or two, then off, etc.

      Are there any?

        Are there any?

I’d like to know this too, it may be there are only low cost portables around and they all have this limitation. Having said that many people seem to be happy with them.

        • I'd also love to hear people's thoughts… I have a portable one that cycles on/off and agree it's next to impossible to maintain just the right amount of heat to simmer things. Simple, consistent heat control is definitely something I miss from when I was just using a portable gas stove.

        • Been eyeing for this but can't find an English version that will shipped to Australia.

Not really…i have the Xiaomi Mijia induction, it does 3 power level. 800, 1600 and 2100w.

          Between 0-49 its 800 watt 50-90 is 1600 watt.

To control temperature it just cycles (on and off)…0-99 power control is marketing gimmick.

Tested with wattmeter at home as well as with my Victron amp meter on 12V > 230v inverter setup for camp cooking.

I am overall happy with Xiaomi induction…however still on lookout for a true portable induction with fine grain heat control for simmering.

@Al-Melbs: The newer Model: DCL002CM I bought definitely can tell the water bubbling between 1, 3, 5 and 40%. (Sorry I have no wattmeter to measure the power consumption). As the cooker has “Dual Control Mode Pulse-width Modulation–Pulse-density Modulation High-frequency Inverter” and not the ON/OFF type, it is excellent for simmering food at very low power.

  • I bought two singles from Kmart (cycle on/off). They're great. FYI

    • What do you cook on them?

      • I do hot pot on my one.

    • Sadly mine died just after a year of ownership (and there's none in stock near me), so I've gone and purchased the single stove Westinghouse. Hopefully this will last a bit longer. :/

  • Our ceramic stove top died and we're going to renovate. Got a single induction cook top, biggest pain is the tony heating area (approx 12cm) which leaves pots and Fridays way too cold around the edge and super hot in the middle…

    • +1

which leaves pots and Fridays way too cold

Nothing worse than a cold start to the weekend!

      • Damn right…. no matter how many times I try to heat up Fridays…..
