This laptop has best in class cooling and excellent performance. It also features a display which is the envy of most laptops and a 140 watt TGP 3070.

$2699.80 after cashback is cheaper than the education store, assuming you can't get cashback on the education store.

Not the cheapest it has ever been, but close.

14% cashback with Cashrewards at the moment (ends midnight tomorrow)

So 14% off $2781.05

Which is $389.35

So cost after cashback is $2669.80

In stock for delivery in 2 days.

Intel and AMD have announced new CPU and GPU combinations so this is technically obsolete. The fact it is in stock for delivery might mean a better deal is yet to come. I am hoping for a price after cashback etc of $2500 or less.

    2399$ for 11800h/32gb/2k165hz/145w 3070/2TB SSD

Both 11800h and 5800h trade blows with each other-amd have the better battery life and better performance on battery, while intel is better at gaming and scales better when on wall power. Both machines have a fair bit of RGB as well so the $300 comes down to whether you need the mux switch or not and if you liked the extra 1TB storage(albeit both machines have a free slot). I say if you are on the move constantly grab the l7 for sure but if your laptop is more stationary and sits on a desk most times grab the x15 and you can hook up a monitor to bypass optimus as well with the $300 saved.

Of course if you could wait, newer machines will come out in a month or two.

I suspect the Lenovo cooling and display are a cut above the Kraken. I personally prefer AMD 5800H over Intel 11800H

2 year warranty on the Kraken and also the extra 1 TB of SSD makes it a value choice.

      • +1

The kraken’s cooling will just be fine, it’s fine tuned by intel itself, and the fact that its 3070m have an extra 5w dynamic boost over the usual 3070m shows intel is confident in its cooling capabilities.

Display is better at with the legion as it do got 16:10 vs 16:9, and better brightness and I would presume slightly better colour management as well.

As for the cpu, that’s up to personal choices, and again as I said in my original reply it’s better to choose what suits you than pick between brands. Both options are pretty competitive this generation.

        • Mate, does the Kraken HDMI port support more than 100Hz? Or do you have to use the USBC?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: You can use HDMI just fine, it’s HDMI 2.1 so supports up to 4k120hz even

        • Having owned a Dell G7 7700 which constantly overheated (100 degrees booting Windows, constant thermal throttling) I am placing cooling very high on my list of wants in my next gaming laptop.

The AMD chip runs cooler and the Legion cooling is verified to be excellent.

Also I don't ever plug my laptop into an external monitor, so a really good screen will be appreciated long after the extra couple of hundred spent is forgotten.

Horses for courses, but for mine the Legion 7 AMD has been my pick for some months and I have just been waiting for prices to come down.

This same build was $2729 before cashback in April 2021.

Also has everyone else found that EDUCOMM is no longer a valid code in the Lenovo education store?

          • @TheCandyMan2020:

            dell g7.

Well mate that’s kinda a dell problem not an intel problem. Even this year’s alienware ryzen models overheat up to 100 degrees out of the box. A good chasis cools both intel and amd well, there is the legion7i model and as far as i know they dont overheat just as the amd models dont.

Also I don't ever plug my laptop into an external monitor, so a really good screen will be appreciated long after the extra couple of hundred spent is forgotten.

And again thats up to personal preferences, My mates and myself included uses an external monitor because we do prefer a larger screen for gaming at home and I also have friends who went for the legion for the mux switch as they don’t want to buy an extra monitor.

Mux is very nice dont get me wrong but $300 is also enough for a decent 24’ gaming monitor not to mention the 2TB ssd is a pretty nice addition.

Is Kraken a reliable brand? I might be dumb here, but I have never heard of this brand before.
Also, CES seemed to be a good one this year.
So not sure how much cheaper the outgoing models will be, or how much better the new ones are going to get.

      • Kraken is a brand sold by BPC only.

They assemble this "Kraken" unit from parts made primarily by Intel. Brrrrt knows more about it than I do.

The same assembled units sell under multiple different brand names worldwide.

        • Thanks OP for the find, btw do you know if "BACK2SCHOOL" code is going to work with CR?

          • @NothingButPoor: I have no idea. If it does and you can get cashback, it's cheaper to buy on the education store.
In theory there is no cashback on the edu store, but some users report getting it.

I guess it depends if you are willing to take the risk to save about $100.

            • @TheCandyMan2020: BACK2SCHOOL is just popping up from Lenovo's main website as I browse through the laptops, I couldn't get into the education store.
And the code is still there as I proceed to the check out page, at least it's there before I pay for it.

Is it better to just wait for 2022 models?

    • +1

It won’t be at this price so it’s up to you.

      • +2

Maybe if he buys the 2022 models in 2023?! 😁

  • anyone have an idea when the new ryzen CPUs come out for the ideaPad laptops? early/mid/end of year?

    • +2

      Mid.

Just like per usual the high end stuff would come out first. As such the earliest 6000 series equipped laptops thats on sale would all be high end - esp gaming - laptops, the ones that would benefit the least from this gen’s iGPU upgrade.

  • Hmm i'm waiting for 12th gen intel for the 4800mhz ram but this is tempting.

  • +3

If the Intel version with Thunderbolt 4 is preferred albeit only 16GB ram but easily upgradable, it's also on promotion with "BACK2SCHOOL" for $2,629 plus CR/SB. Might be the lowest price for an Intel Legion 7 RTX 3070?
    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-7…

    • Thanks mate, really tempted to pull the trigger…

    • That is a seriously good deal.

Interesting that they have enabled "BACK2SCHOOL" for that Legion 7 in the normal Lenovo store, but it doesn't work for the other Legion 7's.

It is pre-built with Windows 10 as opposed to the others with Windows 11, but the upgrade is free and painless.

    • Apart from it being a Intel CPU and less ram than this model, is there any difference between the two??

      • From what I gather and the research TheCandyMan20220 provided here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/678328

Intel is very slightly faster which could be down to having a faster PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe drive (Ryzen have PCIe 3.0 x4).
Intel also have Thunderbolt 4 which is natively supported if you have any use for it (I personally have a Thunderbolt4 hub).
AMD have much better battery life over Intel.
        AMD supposedly runs cooler too.

Otherwise it's bascially pretty much the same. Usually the Intel is more expensive, but it's a good $400+ cheaper right now!

I had the Legion 5 Pro with the exact same setup as this and it was an excellent laptop, upgraded a few months ago to Legion 7 with the Ryzen 9 5900HX/RTX 3080 which is an absolute beast build quality is excellent on both machines but it is a nightmare to remove bottom cover to upgrade storage/ram.
Only issue with Legion 7 is when using the corsair lighting software one of the LEDs on the front left corner on the light strip gets stuck and wont change colour, its a software issue as once you disable and use the standard lighting schemes its fine.
Both laptops are great and this model here would sit someone between the two i mentioned and this is a great price I am running it with 2x 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus, mostly used plugged in with the Xiaomi Mi Curved 34" 144Hz gaming monitor and 2x 27" Lg monitors and its really good so yeah for this price its definately worth esp if you get the cashback, waiting for latest gen cpus will be months away and then who knows how long before lenovo ships them to customers and who knows how much it will be
if you in the market for a laptop and want something now than i recon this is a no brainer

    • How loud are the fans?

      • +1

Mostly use with headphones on so i dont hear it
But when i havent had my headphones on fan noise wasnt too loud

  • +1

Can this laptop go back to Windows 10?
I'm not really a fan of Windows 11 at this stage

  • Deal is Back! For anyone still interested. I just bought myself a unit.
