Credit to Indecisive1 for his comments on my Legion 7 AMD deal

By my calculations this is $2294.40 delivered if the Cashrewards 14% cashback applies

Discount is heavy because it has Windows 10 pre-installed not Windows 11.
The exact same build but with Windows 11 pre-installed is more than $500 more.
The upgrade to Windows 11 once you have the laptop is free and pretty painless so I have pulled the trigger on this deal.

$61 of Lenovo rewards too!

The Intel is quicker but hotter. The SSD speed is significantly better on the Intel…

    OOS :(

  • Thank god it’s OOS, it was keeping me awake

Well my laptop is out for delivery today - which isn't bad given I am living in regional NSW.

My sister also bought one, she's in Sydney and hers is due today as well.

Thinking that 32gb RAM might be good

At $175.50 I think this is good value
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334156596120

Not the absolute quickest RAM (CL22) but good bang for buck.

    • Upgraded mine to 64GB today. Crucial RAM. Easy peasy. Total overkill though.

    Initial impressions:
    * the speakers aren't very loud
    * the screen is very bright and very nice
    * she runs HOT in games like Civilization 5 - CPU and GPU up in the high 80's - the section above the keyboard before the bottom of the screen gets hot enough to fry eggs

    • What are the temps like in normal browsing etc?

      • +1

        Early 50's on the CPU

The GPU is disabled (see below, I can't get the computer to show a display if i force the GPU to always on).

  • If the ssd that comes with the laptop is PCIE4, I assume the other empty slot would be PCIE3?

Any idea which SSD is compatible with the 2nd empty slot? Looking to get 2tb for storage while using the current SSD to run the program.

  • Are you guys getting a black screen on Windows boot if you set graphics from dynamic to discrete?

You can switch in Lenovo Vantage or in the bios. Either way i get black screen on boot every time with it set to discrete.

Works fine if set to dynamic.

  • Also if using dynamic graphics do you get an Nvidia Container error "Unable to change display mode" when you try to run a game (Like Civilization 6)

I get the error, then a few seconds later the game loads.

  • Anyone got a fix for FN + R not working?

    • +1

What is FN + R supposed to do?

It doesn't seem to do anything for me.

Does your PC black screen if you set graphics to discrete then reboot?
Mine does, whether I set it in Lenovo Vantage or in BIOS.
Once it black screens, the only way to fix it is to hold F2 on startup, go into BIOS and select hybrid graphics - then restart and it will boot fine.

Have to say I am unimpressed with Lenovo's "premium 24x7" support

Called Sunday night, they had no people available to take the call. They called back on Tuesday. Sent me an email with some troubleshooting which didn't work.

Now they want me to reinstall Windows from scratch - and Windows 10, not 11 which I had already upgraded to.

I was disappointed with the way they were dodging me when I asked them to match the website promo price for extended Premium Support when buying with a new laptop. This was when I tried to extend it for my laptop which I just received. I wanted to buy an extra 2 years to make it 3 in total. They wanted $289 for that while at the same time on the website they were offering the same for $139. They were either giving me runarounds on the phone or ignoring my emails. Leaves a pretty sour taste of the company. They should not discriminate just because I already received my laptop - I could have just sent it back and reordered with the new deal online which would have meant more hassle for them. They should have just matched it.

But, given your experience it sounds like it is not worth it in the end. I am also thinking, surely the Australian statutory warranty should not require anything in addition to what they already give us for free (1yr "premium" support?)…

        • restocking fee is 20% I think

      • FN+R doesn't do anything for me either. It's meant to toggle the refresh rate between 168 and 60Hz.

    • Try running the lenovo hotkey app and allow it to load during startup.

Lenovo support had me reinstall Windows 10 and reset the PC to try to fix the problem with black screening on boot when discrete graphics are enabled

In the base Windows 10 build, Lenovo Vantage doesnt even have an option to switch between hybrid and discrete graphics.

After you do all the Windows 10 updates, including graphics drivers and Lenovo updates, the option appears.
The black screen starts happening sometimes from then on.

Once you upgrade to Windows 11, it happens every time.

Lenovo have offered to take the laptop back as DOA. I am very tempted to take the offer.

    • So basically when you upgrade to windows 11 and switch to discrete GPU mode then the screen will keep going blank on and on? As I purchased the Legion 7 3070 5800H from the cashback deal I'm not sure if I should send it back when i get it tomorrow.

    • Hi,

Just wanted to let you know that I ran into the same problem as you with Windows 11 booting with discrete graphics enabled.

I managed to fix it by installing Nvidia 511.65 drivers with a clean install.

The patch notes says that they fixed an issue with dGPU and black screens.

[Notebook]: With Advanced Optimus configured in dGPU mode, notebook will display a black screen. [3502766]

Not sure if you returned your laptop but just in case anyone else has the same problem.

Clean install drivers downloaded direct from nvidia website.

      https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/186769/en…

      • Thanks so much for your reply Comulent1

I am right in the middle of the RMA process as we speak.

When you say a clean install, do you remove the existing driver before installing the new driver?

Or do you just download the new driver and do an express install over the top of the old?

        • I didn't remove the drivers manually beforehand.

Just ran the downloaded installer file.

I picked custom install and there was a check box for clean install.

          • @Cromulent1: I just did an express install with those drivers (not clean) and it didnt fix the issue.

Will try a clean install tonight

            • @TheCandyMan2020: Hmm,

              Hope it works.

Other things I've done to my install is to remove icue 3 and put in icue v4.

Also remove the preinstalled Vantage and install the latest from the website.

I'm also fully up to date with all windows 11 updates.

              • @Cromulent1: Clean install did work for me!

Not sure I can stop the RMA process now though.

                • @TheCandyMan2020: Um. Yay! And oh no!

It's been a good laptop for me so far. I'm quite happy with it.

Thanks for posting about the deal at the very beginning.

I guess at least there's a solution for anyone else searching with the same problem.
