  • Quick, call the Ghostbuster!

  • will these breed easily if you have at least 2 or they need very specific conditions .

    • They breed easily, but you'll probs need 5-10.

You need a large/fertile female and a male. Most of these stores aren't selling you the adults, they're collecting the babies and selling them. My cherries constantly 'berry' and birth about 30-40 shrimp in one hit.

    • We recommend to go with 10 to start a colony, we actually sell a mix of sizes so they should be breeding fairly quickly after getting them.

10 is for redundancy and to keep genetic diversity. As long as you keep your tank indoors they have enough food and you have a filter they should be fine.

  • Hey rep, do you have a physical location? Always looking to check out new aquarium stores.

Also, a suggestion for others, unless you just want them to be functional (clean up your tank), I would recommend some kind of Cherry shrimp so you can actually see them. Almost as easy to keep as ghosts but not invisible!

Also rep, any suggestions for a snail type that won't breed but will keep a small 28L tank clean? It's a shrimp tank so I don't want to have it overrun with snails.

    • Nerite snails don't breed in freshwater. They're probably your best bet.

Second choice would be Mystery/Apple snails, they breed but need a M/F pair, lay their eggs on the water-line so easy to remove. Worst case if they do breed you can sell 'em for like $1/pop easy.

    • sulawesi rabbit snails…but they're hard to find

    • We are home breeder so we don't have a physical storefront, you can come in by appointment if you like it is in Ultimo.

With snails, they will breed to the limit of how much food they can get. We never have an issue with too many snails, and often if your snails overrun your tank it might mean you are feeding too much. Though you might be doing that on purpose since it seems like you are breeding shrimp?

I find trumpets better for that since they get at the food in the substrate shrimp can't reach.

Otherwise the two commenters suggestions could work too.

    Needs shipping in the title.

Shipping is $9. The estimate doesn't work until you click through.

    • +3

Title is misleading. Implies 1.50 including postage.

    • Oh there should be an estimate in cart, does it not work?
But yes, for more than one shrimp it would be $12 for express, we will amend the title, thanks.

So who cleans the shrimps turd?

    • the filter

    • the shrimp centipede.

  • gotta love OZB sometimes.

got an outdoor pond because goldfish outgrew the indoor tank
been looking for pond cleaners for a while locally, never thought to have it posted.

what different cleaners would you recomoned for maximum cleaning?
Ghost shrimps and Ram horn snails?

    • Would also recommend Otocinclus

      • +1

        or Plecostomus

    • For cleaners I would actually strongly de-rec otocinclus. Var picky eaters and purely vegetarian not omnivores so the amount of cleaning they actually do would be limited. If the pond is very big you could give them a go as a display fish though.

For actual cleaners besides the goldfish snails and shrimp are probably best and the best thing about the shrimp is they will be very nutritious for the fish and usually enough survive to keep the colony going if you have enough plant cover.

  • Shrimp used to always die and/or get picked off in my old aquariums. Cool for a few weeks though.

    • How big are your fish?

  • Does this taste like the other prawns? Trying to prep for Australia Day bbq

    • maybe for 2023

You don't know how many people have made a shrimp eating joke to me. No one does it for fish for some reason though…

      • Every time I mention that I have shrimp people ask I eat them. I think people only associate shrimp with food whereas fish are associated with food and pets. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • I suspect my cichlids would enjoy them as an expensive breakfast.

    • +1

That's if they survived the hard water

    • If you have enough plant cover often enough will survive to keep The Colony going, but definitely don't test that with any expensive shrimp XD

Cheaper at woolworths $23/kg at moment.

Will these mix well with my sea monkeys?

    • These are Freshwater not seawater so they will die if you have them in saltwater.

  • My turtle and bigger fish picked 50 of these off in about a day. To be fair they were eating the algae in that time.
Also if you have high water level and no lid some may jump out.

  • I have a large fishpond with algae out of control. Would these breed?

      Try some splosht instead.

I bought a JEBO 18W/36W UV Lamp Light Clarifier Filter last week, it took three days to clean up my pond water. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334074957066

      • Nice, does it have it's own pump built in?

    • Agree with others that perhaps best to do something more drastic to start. I would probably clean the pond as best as I could, remove as much algae as possible, big water change (as close to 100% as possible given any fish living in the pond), then treat with algaecide. Wait a week, another big water change trying to get out as much of the now dead algae as possible, then consider adding something like these shrimp.

To answer your question though, assuming the water quality is passable, they should breed. Though they are also great snacks to any and all fish in your pond so if you have fish, they won't be able to do much beyond survive if you have a nice dense plant for them to live in.

  • out of stock.

does anyone know of similiar places in Melb i might be able to pick up from instead of having posted?

did a quick google, and seems stores are either in NSW or online only

    • I'm in NSW, but I bought mine off Gumtree for $1/shrimp. These breed easily so should be ppl happy to sell here and there.

      • thanks. i have been watching local gumtree and FB marketplace. they tend to be in big supply one day and then disappear the next
        but thanks

    • We are in stock once again, ghost shrimp will often come in and out of stock but are usually back in fairly fast since they breed well for us.

You can follow our Facebook page or mailing list or just ask us directly if there is something out of stock you like, we may get them soon and post whenever we do.

      Thanks!
