I started buying my kids nerf guns years back when he was still a couple years old, like all the old cool modulus ones etc. He's now 6 and old enough for some of them but will get the bigger ones when he's old enough.
You can always get cheap second hand ones on local buy/swap/sell groups on FB if you just want small Nerf guns for a "fix"
Chasing cheap Nerf guns can become quite addictive after a while, to the point I’ve got 3+ of the same guns for no apparent reason.

Nerf darts are not meant to shoot straight, like Stormtroopers.
Mega darts are larger and heavier than the regular ones, but still the same design.
