eBay Cancel Request

My phone screen got smashed and it started pressing things on screen without my help. It managed a purchase in the ebay app of a high value item advertised for 5x its real worth! I sent a cancellation request and a message to the seller within 10 min of this purchase but I haven't heard anything back. I imagine the price is too good for the seller to just cancel it but there's no way I can take this amount as a hit. How should I approach this? The seller doesn't accept returns either so I can't see any way out

I dont see how random presses on a screen can end up purchasing something. Just the number of clicks that need to happen in the right spot to make that happen seems so very unlikely.

    • Start ebay app
    • Select an item
    • Click on the Buy Now button
    • Select payment method that matches what you have linked in your ebay account (credit card, paypal, etc)
    • Confirm payment

I dont have the ebay app; so dont know exact steps and there may be more as well.

I just dont find your story believable at all.

    • But they lived happily ever after in the woods…

Did your phone at least manage to get some cashback for you?

phone probably swapped tabs and now invalidated cashback lol

I was cycling at the time with phone in pocket, it even shared random links to about 5 different contacts on facebook! There's no reason to lie here. I don't think the circumstances even make a difference. I deleted my card in ebay app now. Need some sort of verification before paying like paypal payment used to be.

What an amazing chain of events:
    * Phone screen get smashed
    * Phone still managed to log into your eBay account
    * Managed to find an item at such a claimed over priced amount
    * Phone finds the right button to press to buy the item
    * The everything comes good and you are able to message the buyer with a cancellation request.

Yeh, pull the other one !!

By the way, with the paper trail you have left there is no way you will be able to convince eBay the product is defective when it arrives.

Wow these new iPhones are amazing!

  • What is the item you accidentally purchased?

He doesn't want his wife to find out.

Might be easier to get a new wife and keep the Ebay item?

he accidentally bought a new wife on ebay….

@altomic: Could always do the swaparoo trick. Claim item is defective and send back the old wife and keep the new one

This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available

Guessing this was posted from/by the phone…

      • err.. how much was this watch listed for? I can see it for about US$300K if I google that item title. If you say it was listed for 5x the market price at say, US$1,500,000, then it's probably because there's no stock and the seller has jacked the price up to keep the listing active (and not expecting anyone to click on "buy now". Hence the reason they might've deactivated the listing.

So you might be lucky….. (or you could've "bought" the last one! lol)

        • It must be a fake or knockoff watch on ebay, I doubt it's genuine, it seems to be listed for $630,000 AUD when I googled it, but I also didn't put much effort in to checking.

Did you try to chat with eBay Online Help? I "think" they can cancel the order within the first 30 mins. They helped me to cancel an order a few years ago.

Phone already did that by itself…

      • Yeah but the phone dialled a 1900 number instead thinking it was the eBay support line and stayed on the call all night long. OP will most definitely have a hard time explaining that CC charge to the wife.

No because my story sounded like bs which is confirmed by this thread. You have an hour to submit a cancellation request but it doesn't seem to do anything meaningful since the seller could just ignore it if they choose.

      • +1

Yes but you need to at least show that you put in the effort to cancel. Especially if you sent in a request via eBay messages, and contacted eBay customer support. You then have evidence if the seller sends it off 2 days later, and you can be like, but I asked to cancel 2 days ago, here's the email and ebay CS transcript.

The offical cancel request I sent and my ebay message should be enough proof of the timing.

      • No because my story sounded like bs

        Are you sure?

  • You should have got your magic phone to order spare parts to fix itself OP.

I think OP woke up their phone and gave it life./s

However, this sounds more like a my dog ate my homework story.

  • Was it for a phone screen protector? Maybe your screen is lonely

    Wait! What the actual?

  • +4

You don't have to pay for eBay items you buy, you just get a non payment strike for not paying which may stop you buying items from other sellers in future

  • +1

Check on prices it would appear the OP is referring to a watch the has a price of around a million bucks????

    I smell a rat

  • Was really hoping this was a new member…. disappointing.

    • The saddest part is every word is true. well..except high value but still a few hundred.

    Just…. don't…. pay.

  • I'd just pay the AU $866,847.26 seems like a bargain.

    but yeah just dont pay.

  • How would ebay facilitate a transfer of 800K to a buyer for a watch?

    • Ideally it would be transferred to the seller.

      • Seller i mean

  • I believe you Op. I had that "ghosting" happen with an iPhone 6.

My phone basically ended up calling one of job referees repeatedly at 3am whilst I slept.
Lots of apologies the next day on my behalf & straight to the apple store. Thankfully as soon as the apple tech turned it on applications started opening on their own & he was like "I'll diagnose it anyway, but this is a pretty obvious issue" and they organized a replacement phone.

Real unlucky what happened in your case, hope you can figure something out.
Also, that watch has a really awful design, I find it hard to believe anyone would purchase it willingly…
