Has Anyone Ever Experienced The Hell's Itch after a Sunburn?

I had severe sunburn maybe 5 years ago near my belly. The following night I experience an itch like no other. Couldn't sleep even though I had work the next day. Tried everything I read on the internet to manage the itch. Eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil, cold shower, hot shower, you name it. Apparently the hell's itch is very rare and not everyone has experienced it. Have you?

"It is described as a maddening, uncontrollable itch of the affected skin. Some have described it as deep sandpaper rubbing on the skin or severe pins and needles,"

"However, 3 days after the onset of the sunburn, triggered by a shower, the most intense itch developed that was more painful than anything I have experienced in my life. It felt as if needles were stabbing deep into the epidermis. The pain was so unbearable that I did not know what to do. I was in a frenzy state, irritable and restless, wringing on the floor, with an intense urge to scratch which made it even worse. It felt like hell. It seemed that I was going insane. Applying aloe-vera skin lotions further worsened the symptoms. The painful itch was so unbearable that I was given benzodiazepines to calm down the uncontrollable urge to scratch, in addition to oral antihistamines, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication."

  • Yep experienced it on both legs. I have a cream somewhere that helped with the itch. I'll have to find it.

  • I had it on my back once when i was a kid, completely forgot about how horrible this experience was until I read this post.

I just suffered through the pain for a few days until it went away.

I’ve had spiders walking all over my arms and face before, it’s a barely noticeable tickle.

  • Once i had sunburn so bad i had blisters from shoulder to shoulder and woke up stuck to my sheets, but never had this devil itch thing.

I had this years ago on my back after skiing without a shirt on on a sunny day….I remember the only relief I could get was lying in the bath, which I spent hours doing.
I also had uni. and remember not being able to sit still and the whole room looking at me as I was wriggling around so much

It was a horrible few days

    Thanks and noted.

  • I used to be itchy all over and I'd scratch until everything was open and weeping. It was the worst thing ever and I was too embarrassed to wear shorts or short sleeves to school. It took me 5-7 years to get over it and thank fk I did with a lot of steroids-based medication. The physical scarring took another 5-10 years to fade to a point where I was more comfortable showing it.

  • When I got a bad sunburn some years ago, I found that calamine lotion was the only thing that worked.
It also calms down itchy insect bites.

  • Aloe vera is good to relieve this. When running a BPackers in Thai, many pale-skinned holidayers were grateful. If you're living in warmer parts of oz, there should be some growing in gardens locally. The leaves contain a sticky gel with anti-inflammatory properties: peel back the outer skin of the leaf to reveal the gel. It can be stored in the freezer.
There are commercial aloe vera preparations in pharmacies, they may help too. Good luck

  • Never had this and I'm glad I haven't, sounds horrible.

  • Never put essential oils on sun burnt skin. If itching get's super severe, consider numbing creams/sprays. It will pass with time as you skin heals and nerve endings close up.

  • Currently got it now. Nothing is relieving the itch. I read an article on the itch, and every word of it is true. Feels as if you're getting bit 1000 times in different places and is just constant. I have tried Aloe Vera, antihistamines, moisturiser and cold shower, but nothing is working. Tomorrow I'm off to the chemist to get a Collodial Oatmeal bath soak as that is meant to relieve the itch. Apparently the itch lasts two days, and yesterday was the first day, so fingers crossed by tomorrow it is gone.

This is probably one of the worst physical sensations I have ever felt, and I have split my hand open. I will never underestimate sunscreen again. If anyone has any medicine or ointment that they recommend for treating this, then I'll be eternally grateful 🙏🙏

    • Omg how did it go??

I legit couldn't sleep at all on the first night. I wanted to cry it was that bad.

But the next day it was a lot better and more bearable.

      • Oh it was hell. I got so frustrated and sounded like a dog who was whining when their owner left. The next day was slightly better but still trash, and the day after that was about half better. Had a warm oatmeal bath on the fourth day and was great for that night. Now all the peeling skin is gone and I swear to never take sunscreen for granted again (until I get burnt again) 😂

        • I even had sunscreen on. But the sun was too hot and I was lying on the beach for 4-5 hours no shade. RIP.

Never want to experience anything like that again.

          • @dabs: I'll hopefully get a discounted CoolCabana from this deal, so fingers crossed I never get Devil's Itch again!
