This looks like the HD and not 4K, might need to edit your description

Neither. Apple TV 4K (2nd Generation) is the one you want.

        Cool.

    • Shield, not locked into the apple eco system, side loading, drm bad on Apple… that's just my personal view.

        OK. thanks.

i have both. while i agree with the points wisc mentioned, I find the user experience much better on the apple tv and have started using that as the main device.

            Can it run Kodi?

            • @jv: i believe not. TBH i havent tried it on the Apple TV as I use Plex more and that runs fine. With some aspects of Kodi, I would suggest using the shield. i had Kodi on the shield and never had any issues

@jv: It can run a Kodi fork called MrMC. Alternatively most Apple TV users use Infuse which is vastly superior in terms of ease of use and UI polish. However neither apps have support for Kodi add-ins or similar functionality.

@tp0: Adding in here. Infuse is awesome. Very clean UI. However, it is a paid app and the free version has limited functionality.

and the shield is locked into the Android ecosystem which is arguably a much bigger problem considering the poor quality of many Android streaming apps. No need for sideloading on tvOS since apps from overseas can be installed direct from the App Store and update automatically.

You only need the Shield if you have a few very specific technical requirements such as lossless Atmos/DTS:X height channel passthrough or you plan on using it for emulation.

poor quality of many Android streaming apps.

The dozen or so apps i use all seem to work fine.

      • I have both too.
I got frustrated with the Shield not being able to play Disney+ movies in 4K/DV/Atmos during 'peak hours.'
Problem mainly solved with the ATV 4K. I wonder if other Shield owners had this problem?
The Shield with its AI upscaling is still better for watching most (non-4K) YouTube videos and some streaming, eg ABC iview's The War Of The Worlds, which I considered unwatchable on the ATV.

    • Nvidia Shield for locally stored media (Kodi)
Apple TV 4K for anything streaming (Audio is just better out of Apple TV 4K).

I have both and only time I use the the shield is for any media that I have locally stored to watch it over Kodi, which is lately almost none, and have been using Apple TV more and more, and prefer watching via the ATV.
Only reason, I still have and use Shield is because of KODI, I just like its user interface and simplicity and folder navigation.

      • If you are only using the Shield for locally stored media (and not the plugins), tvOS has a port of Kodi called MrMC you can use for that purpose. (Others prefer Infuse for this purpose too, or you can even use VLC if you want).

        • Thanks, I have not tried MrMC, will give that a go.
          Didn't quite like the Infuse.

        • yes VLC can do “local” content which is handy

      • I use plex for stored media. kodi for iptv.

        • which iptv provider / point me a direction to take a look please?

          • @FreshPrinceofKP:

            which iptv provider

None, I just add streams for channels i like to watch.

  • The Apple TV HD uses an extremely outdated SoC and is not a great experience in 2022, if you’re getting an Apple TV the 2021 4K version is worth the extra money
