Will Tesla Get Cheaper or More Expensive with Rebates?

I'm looking to purchase A Tesla.
For budget reasons, happy to proceed with Model 3 as it's cheapest.

Hoping however, to purchase the performance Version, with full self drive capabilities.

Currently sticker price driveway RRP from Tesla I believe is $94k + $10k for self driving.

Do we have any indication if this will get cheaper over the next 3-5 years due to govt grants and EV subsidies, or do we expect it to get more expensive?

I can stretch, and purchase it now.
Or we can wait 3-5 years and upgrade later.

Not sure if I should pull the trigger now or not?
Thanks

  • I read, yesterday, that Panasonic has developed a more efficient Lithium battery that will be used in future Teslas. It’s physically larger than the current ones, but fewer are needed. So, with batteries making up 30% of the cost of the car, it should reduce the price of Teslas while adding about 20% to maximum distance travelled on one charge.

  • All cars will likely get cheaper if/when the chip shortage clears up. However until then expect prices to go north

If you have to stretch to buy a $90k car, maybe the $90k car isn’t for you?

unless its high yield Ozbargain approved ?

      • Correct, all bets are off then!

  • One word: I n f l a t i o n.

  • It will only drop in price when supply outstrips demand.

This can happen in two ways. Increase production

Or reduce demand. Ie. direct competition, catastrophic safety flaw, obsolete features and styling

  • 94k? so only M3P is model3?
Just buy a base m3, it's good enough for your daily drive.

They said they're going to buy used. So they could get a P85D right now for less if they wanted to. Who wants to waste those extra couple seconds living their life one quarter mile at a time? Not Vin Diesel.

    • Whats a M3?

  • I haven't studied this, but got the impression new Teslas came with some sort of discounted recharge deals

designed to cover the prospect that after that runs out, recharging might become a whole lot more expensive

happy for experienced to confirm or deny this impression

Id wait a year or 2,
Hyundai and Kia are launching the new E-GMP platform which will see some more standardized infrastructure around EV's across Kia and Hyundai.
Ive particularly been looking at the Kia Niro 2023 model (not the current ones)

BMW, VW, Volvo and probably a bunch more will eventually launch their EV range in Australia.

Europe is pushing EV's hard and are offering subsidies to entice uptake over there. As expected Australia is a little behind but would expect to see some serious movement in this space over the next year or 2.

Over the next year or 2… or 10.

    • why should a $60k+ purchase be subsided?

let EV compete on equal terms.

even your God elon musk doesn't want subsidies

      • Elon loves subsidies. The only reason Tesla is turning a profit is subsidies and things like getting local governments to build giga factories and promising x jobs (and then not delivering).

One but not the only example: https://electrek.co/2021/09/06/tesla-tsla-over-1-billion-gov…

        • Wrong, Tesla makes money by selling green car certs to other manufacturers as per nearly every quartersbreport

Elon has tweeted and interviews would prefer removal of subsidies as it distorts the industry. As it has. Consider Denmark as a prime example

That battery money is just government being stupid. But you will believe what you want anyway

          • @quog: I mean, I think all their giga factories have deals like this. And Tesla cars has had their price subsidized for a decade. What Elon says publically is not what he campaigns for privately.

And you were saying someone else thought Elon was a god? Jesus.

      • Didn't Australia pay millions of dollars in subsidies for people to install solar panels?

Let the energy market compete on equal terms.

    • Geely is NOT a competitor to Tesla.

It's like saying some random Chinese junk is a competitor to Apple.

They are not in the same league.

      • Based upon what? The fact it's Chinese made? I've seen and driven an early US made model 3 and IMO it was very poor in terms of overall fit and finish. The Chinese made model 3 that we get now are apparently significantly better but I haven't seen one first hand. COO is not an indicator of quality.

Yeah the Tesla is a fraction quicker in TLGP but not enough for most people to care. Otherwise they're very comparable on paper so definitely are a direct market competitor. Personally I think the polestar looks better as well.

        • It's based on last year's report. I'll wait for the 2022 report on how big the latest gap is.

          https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-vs-geely-electric-vehic…

          • @rektrading: I'll admit I stopped reading but that appears to be a comparison between Tesla and Geely stock, not their products. So sure I guess, by stock in Tesla rather than Geely but that has nothing to do with which vehicle to buy and especially the claim that the polestar 2 isn't a competitor to a model 3.

            • @apsilon: tldr Tesla can sell cars and Geely can't.

Polestar 2 can be the best car ever build but it will flop if nobody buys them.

              • @rektrading: We'll have to wait and see. Given the size of Geely I don't think they'll have a problem long term.

    • having driven both the Polestar 2 last month and the Tesla3 a few weeks before that, it's fair to say the Tesla's zip and general performance is better than the Polestar 2 (comparing both 'standard' models, not the AWDs). But the difference on the road won't matter too much for most of us. The biggest drawback of the Polestar 2 imho is its smaller interior and the 'transmission' hump which limits further the backseat space. It's for this reason alone we decided the Tesla3 suited us as a family of 4 better, despite liking the looks and general finish of the Polestar 2. fwiw,

  • I sense an election in the air and a current PM a bit wiffy, in part because of him eating coal and threatening loss of weekend.
If it was my money and not really urgent I would be seeing how much we look like Denmark by the end of the liblab promise-thon…….
June is a good time to order, it’ll be delivered sometime in Spring I guess. 🤔
