Taveners 1 kg Liquorice Allsorts $7 at The Reject Shop

430

Hi everyone

I don't post offers often so please be gentle with me.

I came across this offer today in another forum and checked the website. $7 for 1 kg of Taverners Liquorice Allsorts is exeptional value. The only problem with the deal is that once I start eating these I can't stop.

yummmmmmm!

cheers Peter

The poms know their shit when it comes to confectionery

    • +9

Maybe - but the genuine article are made by Bassetts!

      • +2

Yes they are the originals. We bought a pack of Taverners last week and can report these are a close second.

What's the more divisive flavour - liquorice or coriander?

    • +2

I don't mind coriander at all; doesn't taste especially bad or especially good. My brother on the other hand, absolutely despises it. We both hate liquorice though.

Either you love them or you hate them, no in between!

doesn't taste especially bad or especially good

That sounds like an in between…

    • Guess you could put aniseed in the same category. Just overpowering flavours.

      • Many liquorice sweets are actually flavoured with anise or aniseed*. Taveners does, however, contain "licorice extract", and the list of ingredients contains no mention of anise or aniseed.

*Reason is liquorice can adversely affect blood pressure and cause digestive issues.

        • Didn't actually know that. I was just saying licorice, anise and coriander are overpowering flavours that people seem to love or hate.

      • If you love aniseed, check out the Inch licorice blocks from Melbas chocolates. The flavour is to die for.

Seaking of Melba's chocolates I visited their factory in Woodside in South Australia many years ago (a converted dairy). Walking into their store was just like when Charlie Bucket and other other Golden Ticket kids walked into Willy Wonka's chocolate factory in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You get the same kind of feeling seeing this amazing display of confectionary everywhere.

Probably chuck olives in there as well. Fan of all 3

      • Veiny blue cheese? Fennel (has a liquorice taste to me), or dill?

        • I'll have to give blue cheese another shot, initially put off by the fact it's mould.

Any suggestions for those starting out? I understand the generic stuff is what you want to avoid at first

          • @TEER3X: Gorgonzola is pretty good and not too strong. Roquefort is my favourite - it's really strong. It's pretty expensive though although Costco sometimes have it at a reasonable price..

        • +2

Liquorice, anise and fennel have a compound in common - anethole, which is why they have a similar taste. Some people love it, others hate it.

        • +1

Fennel does have a liquorice taste. My wife grows it. It grows like crazy. The bulb fried up with a bit of butter and garlic is awesome - superb with some roast pork, veggies and gravy.

      Coriander, it's genetics.

      • +1

weird thing is I hated it (soap like) until I got pregnant and now I can't have enough. no idea of my parents attitudes to it, don't think uk had it in those days

    • Depends if you have that gene I guess.
      I don’t and I absolutely love licorice

  • Love the Bassetts ones, are these similar?

  • +2

This brand is absolutely flavourless, wouldn’t pay $3 for it, hence why it’s at the Reject Shop.

    • +3

      But you would pay $2.99?

      • +1

Technically no as I would take all my 5 cent pieces in.

    • +1

I agree. Artificial flavours and colours are so much better — trust the science

When the Reject Shop had Tesco branded licorice, I was really surprised how good it was. Shame they don't have it anymore.

  • Taveners without the r?

  • I would demolish this in one sitting and feel horrible afterwards.

    • That's not horrible that's running down your leg

Yum, thanks OP. This will either last all year or all week.

    • Probably just all day.

Just wish Starburst Snakes etc were reintroduced as those had good tangy flavour.

My mums opinion, very little liquorice and a lot more sugar. I haven't tasted it (they have gelatin and choose not to eat it) but I'd say more than 50% of each lolly is sugar. Just feedback, probably positive for some and negative for others.

    • I'd say more than 50% of each lolly is sugar.

      Sugar 55.9 g (per 100 g)

      You sir, are correct.

      • +1

Yep confectionary is based on sugar - well spotted.

Gee thanks for pointing out the obvious, we need more people on this planet like yourself

  • Mmm Coriander flavoured Liqourice…
