Activating $2 Starter Pack without Recharge

Ive bought a few Vodaphone $2 sim starter pack and cannot activate it without recharging at least 10 dollars. Does anyone know of a sim starter that doesnt require this or a work around this?
Basically looking to create new numbers that i can recieve texts on but not use them for anything.

My next bet is to call them and find out if they can activate it without this.

Cheers!

  • Optus used to be able, but need to do online chat they activate for you. Just create some excuses why you need it active now and recharge later…

  • This one works for that but it’s $5. https://www.aldimobile.com.au/products/payg

Thanks guys, I called vodaphone and they said they cannot do it. I even escalated it to a manager. Next time ill buy 1 sim to test it out rather than 4! Lmao

So you wasted valuable resources that could have gone into helping someone actually in need all because you made the mistake of buying starter Sims thinking they had credit. Wow, just wow.

Costed Voda more than $2 to deal with OP who doesn't want to pay more to Voda. LoL

      • LMAO relax dude. Just trying to get a few burner numbers going. Everyone on this site is a stingy bastard just like me lol

        • Stingy and escalating an issue to a manager because of your mistake are two seperate things. Also your username checks out wonderfully.

    • Vodafone prepaid usually on sale and with 75%-90% Cashback it should be really cheap. Why not getting that instead?

I tried this for doordash and Uber first order credits, bought like 4 and never works, so good luck!

    • Thanks man! exactly what i was trying to acheive

      • Haha thought so, I thought when I saw these $2 sims at cokes and virtual Visa card via Revolut I hit the jackpot, $20 of each order, then hit the brick wall of load up credit and I was like ohh damn this sucks, so lost the $8 buying SIM cards and not using them, a loss is a loss but and still hurts LOL

  • I bought Optus and Vodafone starter sims today to check out signal at my place. Guess it's not going to be that easy (or cheap). Any suggestions?

Telstra $2 starter pack - even better when free from 7/11
Amaysim $2 starter pack - when there's promo codes around

Optus network: There's still a couple of days left on the current Amaysim freebie…. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/663347. You can even search for a number you like. You can still receive calls and texts for up to a year after recharge expiry, and you'll be notified by e-mail nine days before you're about to lose the number. Don't forget to disable auto-recharge.

Vodafone network: Still plenty of time to get a $20 Kogan Mobile starter pack for $2.90…. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/670300. In my experience, you can only receive calls and texts without an active recharge for a relatively short period of time, but YMMV. Don't forget to disable auto-recharge.

There's also Felix for a free month: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/679347 so plenty of ways to get free numbers if all you want is to get a number for receiving texts.

Amaysim used to let you do postpaid PAYG, so basically free if you never use data/phone/SMS. I don't think they offer that anymore though.

  • The big 3 telcos used to give the SIMs away for free online. They never gave away free credit though. There are still ways to get free SIMs, and occasionally even SIMs with credit on them like: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/615879 but those are rare.
