Ryco oil filters are overpriced. I find OEM is cheaper and better quality.

    • Would like to know which oem brands are better quality than ryco?

      • Pls share the brand thx. I wouldn't mind giving them a go and saving a few bucks

‘OEM’ is an acronym for Original Equipment Manufacturer so that would generally mean Toyota, Holden, Mazda, or whatever brand your vehicle is. Usually you get these from a dealership but can be found elsewhere when you look around. Ryco is a reputable brand and used to be the go-to filter when you wanted third-party, but OEM parts have dropped in price plus there are now lots of other decent alternatives in the after-market space.

@Chazzozz: My understanding is ryco, wesfil, sakura, and k&n are oem. All Toyota, Honda, Mazda printed their brand on it are original even though they are rebranded from same manucturer.

            • @dtingy: Oh, definitely - just because it has a car manufacturer’s name on the box doesn’t necessarily mean they made it, it’s highly likely to be made by one of the 3rd-party companies. The only extra you get is the absolute guarantee from them it will fit and work as advertised. The chance of 3rd-party not fitting or working is very small, but it can sometimes happen in rare cases.

            • @dtingy: Sure, but thats not the point they're making.

They mean purchase from your OEM, the wholesale agreement isnt worth your consideration.

And yep, honda filters are half the price 'genuine' than aftermarket.

And it gets significantly cheaper again, if you plan to keep the car a long time, so buy in a boxed quantity (usually 16).

              Same goes for oil.
A 40L mini-drum is worlds cheaper from your dealer, than from an aftermarket.

              • @MasterScythe: How much does a 40l mini drum cost (and what weight e.g., 0W16)?

@Worf: Anywhere from $3-$8 a litre, depending on what you need.

Magnatec shit is like $3.60, where Castrol edge can be $6-7.

            • @dtingy: Ryco, Wesfil and Sakura are not OEM as far as I know, but rather they meet the specification of the OEM filter.

Filters made for Toyota are generally made by Denso, Mazda and Subaru use Tokyo Roki. General Motors (US) are Delco, Ford (US) was Motorcraft. I believe Bosch and Valeo do European brands or Japanese models manufactured in Europe.

  • the only problem with dealers are that every time I have to call them to get a quote because they don't publish their prices online or publish a price list.

It also rarely changes more than a few cents a year either though; so after the first you have a good guess.

And a lot of folks know fairly reliably if they're going to keep their car or not (so can stock up); so really its a once a year (at most) problem.

And payphones are free now, if the call itself is the gatekeeper.
