For those unaware, these are supposed to be the replacement for the classic DT 770 aand DT 990 respectively.

    • Seems that they're their own product, with their own strengths and weaknesses. Detail isn't their strong suit for the price though.

  • I have a pair of Philips Fidelio x2s, are these any upgrade at all?

    • +1

I prefer the x2 to the 990s. More comfortable, less sharp top end. That's just my opinion though, sound is subjective.

If you don't already have closed back headphones, the 770x is a great pair. There are plenty of threads on r/headphones if you want more opinions or discussion threads.

      • DT 900 is better than 990, more balance and very good adjustment

        • Sorry, I implied that DT 990 Pro. Definitely different products.

      • Opposite for me. 990's are significantly more comfortable to me and I prefer the sound over the x2's. It's all subjective.

        • Yeah, first review I looked at for the 990s said don't even bother listening to music with them cause the high end is horrid and only good for gaming. Never saw a review like that for the X2. I'm also surprised you found the X2 to be uncomfortable, it's hard to imagine a more comfortable headphone but I'm sure there is one somewhere. Maybe significantly was an overstatement.

    • Why would you bother sidegrading to these unless your x2s are broke?

I just bought (3 weeks ago) the DT 770s. Best headphones I've ever bought. I bought them from Macron Music in Melbourne for $209 (price matching MiniDisc in Sydney) for my e-drumkit and recording purposes (guitar, vocals, etc) and they are brilliant. Mine are the 80 ohm, which I believe are more suited to eDrums than the 32 ohm (which are more suited to portable audio devices - i.e. phones, etc). Although, the 80's sound amazing on my iPhone too.

Not sure how the 700s or 900s compare exactly, but if they're better than the 770s then wow, and definitely worth the money (because they'd be quite simply unreal if they're better) but if they're about the same, I'd recommend the cheaper 770s…

    • A major difference is the detachable cable on the DT 700 / 900 Pro X. It's usually the cable that's the first thing to fail, so if anything goes wrong, you'll need to desolder the old one and solder a new one.

I have the DT 900 Pro X and it's very good.

    • 900 and 700 has better voice adjustment, expecially 900.
Cons is clamp ur head more tight than 990s which may make u uncomfort after a while.

If only discussing about voice and field, there is an obvious improvement to 990s.

You can fix the clamp by just flexing the band over the box (with some foam under each earcup) and leaving it there for a while. That's exactly what I did, and they're really comfy now.

        • oh thx mate, it disturbs me for a while, coz my head is big.

          • +1

@Liquid Pro: Same, big head :)

Don't worry about the headband breaking, the plastic shell is TPU and there's a metal band inside. Flex it as much as you need to get it looser.

  • This or Philips SHP9500?

  • This or Sennheiser HD58X?
