Catch has dropped the prices of Germanica Portable Air Conditioners by 40% till midnight. Seems they have launched them recently.
1.9KW one has got some good reviews but apparently sold out.
Apparently decent prices compered to the prices and capacities.

  • Germanica Portable Air Conditioners

Are these made in Germany ?

  • +1

I hope the output numbers are correct. I bought a 'Carson' brand AC on eBay who's true output was about half the advertised output.
It is fairly classic of no-name brands to overstate their abilities. You can get a basic idea from the input power it uses

  • "Please note: product requires hot air to be vented through a window"

Does this mean some installation work is required or just need window to be open during operation?

    • +3

They usually come with a fitting for the outlet pipe that you close the window on to (they are adjustable)

    • +1

No installation work. They come with something like this which you can adjust to the length of your window and then lock it in place.

  • rebranded like Hyundai ones sold on Kogan?

  • I want to get one for my bedroom but don't want it actually in there. I was thinking of putting it in another room and then sticky taping a goon sack to the outlet and then use a diverter hose to pump cold air into my bedroom. Would that be okay?

    • +1

      get a split AC instead

      • +3

        No can do, rental property.

        • +1

You could run the split-system hoses through a slightly-open window, and block the rest of the gap.
They used to sell pre-assembled split portables that worked this way. Indoor unit on brackets, resting on a cabinet :-)

@bargaino: Yeah, those would have been ideal but they are almost impossible to find in Australia. The cheapest one is like $2k for some reason.

        • As long as you're sucking the cold air right from the ac. These things don't do well cooling the actual room, but they do blow icy cold air.

Not sure how you're gonna get an ac duct to your room though, won't be able to close the door and probably wo t get it to cool that much. Plumbing hose won't move much air.

          • @krisspy: yeah, I was going to stick tape the goon sack all over the outlet so all the cold air goes into the sack. Then I would connect like a grey water hose or something to the goon tap and pump it into my room.

            • @ChickenDinner123: Nah you would barely be able to feel the air come out of that.

You would need something like a 10cm diameter pipe.

    • It will not work as well. Usually it is the immediate vicinity that gets cooled properly.

  • +3

These have just one hose to window, to blow out hot air.

Which means the room must be sucking in an equal amount of hot-but-less-hot air.
Efficiency is therefore low, and it will not compare to a proper aircon of the same power rating.

    • +1

Yeah they are terrible. You need to look for the 2 duct versions if you can find any, I don't think they are available in Oz. This keeps the outside air out and the inside air in. Some of the single duct versions clearly have a place for a second hose and others can just be DIY'ed. Look up Dual hose a/c on whirlpool for all the lunacy.

      • I just got a window model when I was renting. Needed a window lock, some board to fill the gap, aluminium strips, rivets and duct tape :)

        • +3

I just bought the Kogan vertical window model 2 months ago. This only required a screw driver to install as it came with an extendable aluminium frame. Awesome!

It has already stopped working lol. So much for Kogan First members getting prioirty support, coming up on 2 weeks now and it is still just sitting in my window waiting for repair/return. It does have a permanent temperature on the display to tell my how hot I currently am though, so there's that.

          • +1

@600dollarman: the various "dual hose a/c" threads on whirlpool is an incredible deep dive into sheer federal govt. regulaiton lunacy

i had a look at all of the 'germanica' a/c units here and the problem is they all have a large square filtered air inlet which will make it a pain to rig up some kind of air inlet duct to the outside

so unless you like a challenge and can mock up a huge square duct intake in cardboard then these will not work well

    • More, they're loud, big and heavy.

One needs to be desperate for cooling and ready to spend on electricity.

  • it's rated at 1300 watts though

    • +1

So? Whats your point? That is the nominal input power, not cooling power.

      • +6

In this house, we obey the laws of thermodynamics.

        • +1

          Entropy ΔS = −Q1/T1 + Q2/T2

          C.O.P.≡ Q1 / W

So obviously, second law of thermodynamics requires ΔS≥0 which implies C.O.P. <= T1/ΔT
          which is quite a lot!

  • +2

As with all portable air cons that don't have dual hoses, it's going to suck cold air inside the room to cool the heat exchanger and blow it out through the window. This means your room will constantly be under negative pressure and will be sucking hot air through the doors and the gaps in the windows.

From experience using a kogan branded one, I was only able to get about 5deg colder than ambient on a 30+ degree summer. It wasn't until I Jerry rigged an intake hose so that the ac sucks air from outside. I was able to get the room to around 20 degrees then. This means the ac would actually cycle down and not be compressing 24/7. Mind you these are loud

"This product is reserved at our suppliers warehouse, and we will work with them to ensure it gets sent to you in the time listed."

Take care with Catch, especially if you try to save money by using gift cards. I did that last time with the Mammoth cooler deal and they screwed up the stock numbers and refunded a lot of people however, if you paid with gift cards they keep the money as store credit (valid 12 months)

  • Does anyone know if these have soft starters? Looking to have one powered by a generator.

  • I ended up purchasing one and operating it for a bit - i'd say it's quite good, but the only issue is the one mentioned previously, where it sucks in air from the room and transfers it outside - still works quite well though
