No need to start looking, I'm already here

    • But your name's not Franklin. Only Franklins are studs.

      • I thought Franklin finds the studs?

        • uses Grindr ?

    • +1

He's here all night ladies and gentlemen.

    • +3

      One night only

  • +77

These are the best studfinders I've ever used. They have an array of LEDs to show you exactly where the stud is, and don't suffer from all the false positives that others I've used do. My only problem is that I've put it somewhere in the garage and can't find it. I need a stud finder finder.

    • +1

I need a stud finder finder.

For real. I have a CH Hanson somewhere in the house (I assume stuck to something metal). I have not been able to locate in about 6 months…

    • I was going to post the same comment, they are by far the simplest and most effective. We own both a Bosch Professional and this is so much easier to use

    • +16

Can you not carry a stud around the house until you hear a beep?

      • +1

You genuinely made me laugh out loud!

      • +1

But you need the stud finder to find the stud in order to find the finder.

    • +11

The best way to find a missing tool is to buy a replacement, and the original is guaranteed to show up soon after.

  • Great price on a fantastic bit of kit. It goes for +$100 at most other places IIRC.

  • +2

A couple of bucks cheaper from Amazon us

    • Items: $54.95
      Shipping & handling: $17.47
      Total before GST: $72.42
Estimated GST to be collected: $7.25
      Order total: $79.67

This is in USD. That's approx 113.55 AUD

      • +5

I’m sorry but you’re wrong. The comment above is referring to the Amazon AU site when selecting Amazon US as a seller. It’s listed as $73.28 in AUD and includes free international shipping with Prime.

        • Oops! Didn't see that, my bad. It's still a great deal for those who missed out on local stock.

  • +2

+1 , these are the only readily available stud finders that work.

I don't believe they show you live line/wires but tbh most of those detectors are a joke anyway.

    • +20

I had a cheap one that showed live wires apparently. It said I had live wires in every wall, every door - even my household furniture apparently contained live wires.

      • +1

If you still have it or intend to use it then I have a few tips to reduce it detecting AC in random places.

      • +2

My Stanley does this. The static you get from moving it across walls sets off the live wires sensor. You need to be holding a finger at the base to "ground" it. It's such a stupid piece of junk

        • omg my stanley does this such a POS… just beeps at everything..

      • They probably assumed that it’s better to be safe than sorry?

    • I have an older bosch that works pretty well to find them

  • Have one and it works great.

  • +2

I've got one of those and it's definitely the best stud finder I've ever used. Worth the cash.

A magnetic one like this is also helpful to complement it.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/CH-Hanson-03040-Magnetic-Finder/dp…

    • Yes, i just use a plain old neodymium magnet it's the best stud finder and only a couple of dollars.

    • I didn't know timber was a hybrid blend of steel 😆

    • How does the magnet help?

      • +3

Gyprock is attached to studs with nails. Magnet finds the nails, therefore the stud is vertical where the nail is.

  • +2

Have the T13 (essentially the same I think but you get a pencil) and it’s a great tool. Works very well.

  • +1

how do these go with steel frame houses?

    • Also interested to know about this

    • +1

      Came across this video
      https://youtu.be/mH2JKbg98eE?t=474

    • +2

Probably better off saving some bucks with the magnetic stud finder linked above.

    • +1

I've been using this magnet this https://www.bunnings.com.au/everhang-47-x-22mm-rectangle-cer…

Wrap them around with duct tape so they can run smoothly and don't leave any mark on the wall.

Never fail me before, and I've hung curtain tracks, floating TV cabinet, attached Ikea Pax to the wall. All with this little $3 magnet.

      Cons:

It doesn't tell you where the live wires are. Luckily I took photos of all the walls with wires on them before the gyprock go up during the build so I got away with it.

    • I have steel frames and never had an issue finding studs. My finder is slightly different, it doesn't have the bubble level.

  • It's a great product - mine had a battery leak and it rusted the thing out unfortunately. Not sure if I need to replace it - I know where everything is in my house now.

  • +28

Disappointed! came for some stud jokes :) got useful information instead

  • +5

    I concur. This actually works!
I originally bought a Stanley stud finder from Bunnings. It was the most pointless piece of junk I've ever purchased - I should have read the reviews first!
    https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/stanley-stud-senso…
I returned it and purchased this Franklin Sensors one and it was Worlds apart.

  • the cheap stud finder, beeps on and off randomly, so it's a lucky guess where to drill and you might hit a live wire and die

  • I have one of these, I bought it a few months ago and it works great. So much better than the previous one (a Ryobi).

  • +2

VASTLY better than the crappo Stanley ones from Bunnings

  • Thanks!
Been on the shopping list for a few months. Appreciate people's feedback too.

  • -1

    Franklin Mint 😉

  • Decided to buy one based on the positive reviews. Thanks op!

  • Be mindful that if your water pipes are attached to the stud and closer to the plasterboard, this or any other will not tell you exactly where the stud edge is as it cannot tell difference. Try to navigate around that area and try to find middle of stud if you can. Compliment by knocking.

    • i have one of these and while awesome, using a FLIR or something similar on your phone mostly makes traditional stud finders pretty pointless as you can see every stud, pipe and cable through the walls. depending on how often you may be using one and the build of your house, you maybe better forking it out for a IR attachment over a stud finder.

that said, for traditional stud finding, these ones are great

      • Is there a cheaper alternative than the $500 I'm finding on a quick google search?

        • +1

Amazon is showing me $330 for the android version of the FLIR One and i think the iOS do normally get around that price these days as well. The FLIR one v2 which i use was actually better and cheaper (~$230) but everything seems to get more expensive with supply chain these days. There are also aliexpress options and seek thermal add-ons, but i've never used them.

I'm not saying you want a FLIR over a stud finder, just if you have specific construction like the op was saying, or potentially a modern house with foam walls where the detection depth on a stud finder may not be enough, they are other options.

  • I learnt about this brand yesterday and was literally going to buy this today. Thanks so much

  • Good find, bought the Aus stock one T13 pro with pencil last year for $97 (currently $105 at Bunnings)

  • Great find and best price OP. Thank you.

  • Bought one of these a couple years back and it's been faultless.

  • +1

Looks like the ruler is only 7 inches, in my opinion that's a bit short for finding a true stud.

  • Agreed with others comments here, I’ve gone through around 5 different stud finders over the years. This is the last stud finder you’ll need, it just works brilliantly.

  • Nice work OP - been looking for a good stud finder.

  • +5

I just got one based on this thread so y'all better not be lying.

  • +14

I come to ozbargain to save money
End up buying stuff I've never heard off and want instantly..

    Thanks

    • So true!!

  • I have one of these. It's awesome.

  • Thank you for this one, I have been watching this for ages after I saw them used once.
    Seems everyone recommends them.

  • +1

Great find. I have one but the only issue I found was that some how it didn't work with eneloops. I had to use normal batteries

    • +1

Same, thought I was going crazy! Bought one, put eneloops in it and it didn’t work. Brought it back to Bunning’s as I thought it was faulty, only for them to put in 2 energizer batteries which made it work perfectly - I looked like a complete idiot!

    • I just got mine delivered and tried them out with the ikea laddas batteries I had. Works perfectly fine.

    • Thought mine was faulty until I realised eneloops don't work. Which is annoying.

Eneloops run at 1.3v where normal batteries are 1.5.. so they're not good for high powered things like flashes etc. But this seems odd to not work with.

I'll try IKEA laddas and report back.

  • +1

I was looking at stud finders recently (to mount my Samsung Frame TV from the JB deal) and was going to buy this except for steep (non sale) price. Ended up getting this instead Tav Tool Stud Finder Wall Scanner for $41.12, lots of good reviews. Just checked it now and it's no longer on sale unfortunately.
Received it today and checked the walls and found my studs easily. Happy with it so far.

The Franklin one is still very good since it's got the bubble level and the ruler built in.

And that's my story. The End.

  • Nice one, Op. needed one.

  • I have a previous generation of this (just doesn't have the built in level).
It's awesome and I use it a lot.
I do wish it had more LED's for a bit better accuracy.
Oh and I wish it had a Live Circuit detector like other stud finders have.

  • An OzBargain favourite. I got one from a previous deal posted here, best studfinder I ever had

  • +1

For anyone who only needs to find a stud in a pinch, you can download a stud-finder app for your phone. IIRC it uses the magnetometer which you find in almost all phones these days. You'd be surprised at the array of sensors we have in our pockets.

    • +1

Can you give a link to the app?

  • +1

I purchased one of these from bunnings for full price and I am really happy with it. So much better than the stanley one I had before. I used to drill in the wrong spot all the time, no more.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/franklin-prosensor-t13-professio… $105.

    • +1

Looks like the t13 is the upgraded version of the 710

  • -2

    Is this better than Tindr/Grindr?

  • +1

How well do these work with insulated walls? Everything I have tried just get thrown out by the insulation and I get readings everywhere.

  • This is the only stud finder that actually works!!!

I've bought so many "Stanley" ones and other brands that are just a complete waste of money.

These Franklin ones are by far a gods gift to carpenters everywhere. The little lights light up where the stud is, no need to constantly go back and forwards waiting for a bloody beep that never comes.

I bought one of these for like double the price (had to import it from USA) years ago. Still going strong.

  • What do people actually need this for (more than one or two times)? I can see the use to hang a wall mounted tv, but otherwise, is it worth investing in one? In the past I have just knocked and got by OK once I learnt the pattern and stud/noggin spacing? Very tempted to buy anyway :)

  • Thanks. I have a Stanley one and it’s useless.

  • a real ozbargainer would just knock on the walls

  • Goto bunnings for a price beat!

  • I'm tempted but not sure if I'd use it - I always use the correct fastener when attaching things to different wall surfaces (gyprock, tile, fibro) so I don't really need to find the stud. Or do I? Is there any need to buy one? I don't think builders would use them - they would just use the correct fastener for the job?

    • +4

Depends what you're hanging. The best gyprock fastener is no match to the strength of fastening to a stud.
I wouldn't hang a tv or large floating shelves to a wall without fastening to at least 1 stud personally.

  • +3

I have this stud finder and it's simple but accurate, no calibration needed. I highly recommend it.
It only does one thing, and that is a line of LED's will light up when you move across a stud or beam that sits behind plasterboard.
I bought this after watching a Youtube video Project Farm, Best Stud Finder? $262Bosch vs $10 CH Hanson vs 9 Other Wall Stud Scanners! Let's find out! The two Franklin studfinders rated very highly. BTW I recommend this Youtube Channel "Project Farm" for any DIY enthusiast.

  • +3

Ordered one. The price is now $73.28, even better. Cheers!

    • I think the local one sold out so this is cheaper, if you can live with the postage delay.

      • Honestly I didn't notice the one I ordered was from US…I thought the price went further down so put the trigger right away. Said it would arrive by 21 Feb and the local stock is available again. Feel a bit sad :(

  • Been using a Bunnings Stanley one with the inbuilt laser. Not too bad but live wire warning always goes off, usually just closed my eyes and reminded my wife on how to do compression's. Nothing to hang at the moment but purchased.

    • Funny comment but in all seriousness if you’re drilling or cutting into a wall with wiring in it just go to the breaker and turn off the circuit till you’re done. Save yourself the hassle of learning CPR.

      • +1

I hear its difficult to perform on one's self.

      • Good advice. I do switch off the breakers regardless. Just didn't sound as funny.

  • Price seems to have gone back up.
EDIT: discounted price is actually showing in cart at check out.

    • +1

      Cheers mate, picked one up.

  • I wish the people I bought this new home off had one…I mean is it normal to cut a 10x10cm hole to find the stud to mount wall brackets (I know the answer).

  • Great stud finders.
Borrowed one and bought the little brother awhile back for about $50, just as good but smaller.
(EDIT: Model M150 for $57, cant find it now on amazon)

    Anyway, Expired?
a buck cheaper at another seller from US.
    Get it now, chop chop
