Cashback Declined by Cashrewards Due to Damaged Stock Refund

Hi all,
Cashrewards declined my cashback from a store (it was a bonus cashback of $10 plus $5 dollar regular cashback) because I had to return the damaged item.
Any idea what I can do to claim it ? At least it's not my fault the item was damaged. So, is there something I can do to make sure they give me the cashback ?
Thank you.

    so you ordered the item.
    it was damaged.
    you returned the item.

but you still want the cashback (on top of your refund).

No. You returned the item, so the store cancelled the cashback. Returns are in the conditions for every store's cashback.

    Lesson learnt

^This is literally the definition of entitlement.

Although in your defence you did have some time wasted in waiting for it to arrive and then returning it. A pity that it wouldn't carry over or they couldn't do an exchange.

Unfortunately any cashback is declined if said transaction is cancelled. The product was returned therefore the initial transaction has been rendered null and void.

So you want $15 even though you at the very end did not spend any money…. NO.

Haha sorry I didn't tell the whole thing.
I ended up buying the same item the next day I returned it. Shouldn't they consider the fact that I wouldn't have returned had it not damaged ?

if you return an item there is no cashback. you'd need to order again from cashrewards using whatever offer was available to you at that time to get any cashback.

I assume the business model of these cash back businesses is that they get paid by the retailer to bring customers to the retailer, and they give some of this money back to the customer as a "reward".

Where is cashrewards getting the money to give back to you if you didn't buy from a retailer that they sent you to?

    • +3

Why not exchange damaged good instead?

      • +1

I did ask the store to exchange but they told me because I ordered the item as delivery I can't exchange it at the store. They said they would refund me, then would get me the item for the same price I bought it for. (although it was $10 more on that day)

So your business model is to buy items, then return them but expect cash backs on each item?

Let me know how that goes for you… no wait.j/k

This won’t work and almost same thing happened to me and I lost just over $60 in cash back!
Bought the Dyson hair straightener via Cashrewards during Myer 20% cash back promo
Got the email to pick it up my items Myer (didn’t want postage as it was Boxing Day and was a late Christmas present)
Get to Myer and they tell me they don’t have the Fuscia hair straightener in stock and it should not have allowed me to select click and collect from that store
They go out back and say they found a corall one and they can cancel my order and refund it and I get the corall

Explained this, no help as order was shown as refunded, lesson being don’t waste your energy move on and hope it does not happen again
      I took the corral

Cashrewards declined my cashback from a store….. because I had to return the damaged item.

    Okay… 😂😂

    • I know but that bonus cashback of $10 was a bit too hard to lose though 😁

  • should have waited until cashback is approved. then do the returns.

Cashback is approved for payment after the return period is over.

      • you can still return a faulty/damaged item after the return period is over. its not a change of mind.

        • Probably varies with the store. The thought about returning after cashback approval did cross my mind but the approval period was around 90 days. So I chose to return it earlier.
BTW I once returned an item at Target within 15 days of buying but ended up getting the cashback. They did give me store credit voucher instead of refund. But I was surprised then when the cashback was approved.

An email with $20 bonus cashback would be awesome.

  • +4

Actually OP I agree with you that it is a bit sh!t that you had to cancel the transaction because of the vendor's fault in sending a damaged item and lost the cashback that probably motivated the purchase in the first place.
The problem is that the cashback provider can only give you cashback if they themselves get the referral payment. In the case of a return the transaction is cancelled, so there is no referral payment to split with you.
Crap situation, but that's just how it works.

    • You explain it so well

    • Yea that's right. Nothing much we can do. First time I have been in this situation. A tad bit disappointed, that's all.
Thank you for supportive words. 😁

Please PM me your CR email address. As a one off, I'll honour the $5 cashback in good will, but unfortunately not the bonus as it's linked to a merchant-approved transaction. Thanks.

Think your being too nice here TA, although I do respect the customer service commitment.

    • +1

Not CR's fault - TA gives real good will gesture

Govt's fault - ScoMo holds press conference "it's not my fault, so don't vote me out. Here, temporary pay rise until next election for eligible employment"

      I'll vote TA for PM.

You returned the item and got a refund…. The purchase hasn't happened in the eyes of the cashback people. So no deal.

  • -1

If you get a refund then you've already got your cash back.

  • Dude why didn't you seek any other store that had that particular item in stock ?

Since you bought in online, most stores can deal with exchanges (definitely sure with Big W about this policy).

Or simply bought some other thing in store as an exchange to that? May be that would have had not made the cashback not approved (although I doubt the second option)
