  • "Harry Potter Women's Flying Sneaker"? I thought that should be "Hermione Granger Women's Flying Sneaker".

    • What am I missing? Is it a joke? Or jab?
Cho, Ginny, and Madam Hooch are the 3 females 'known for flying' in the series.

  • land fill

    • Because Harry Potter is trash or because you think these shoes will fall apart quickly?

Why didn't the "wizards" just cast themselves out of the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises? Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

a-at least the books were good though

"No!" The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

Do you need to sit down with someone and go over this? Sounds like you've got some stuff to work out.

    • Ha seriously you’re quoting some knob literary critic called Harold Bloom from Yale writing for the LA Times back in 2013 this is not where I imagined these runners would take me.

Well that changes everything. I do love me a good shitpost. You need a very high IQ to understand them.

You need to be careful you dont speak opinion as fact, because it sounds big headed.

In 1997, what was it competing with? Lemony Snicket was still 2 years away, goosebumps was aimed at a younger audience. Discworld was aimed at a slightly older audience, and "the classics" were already well read and re-read.

There wasn't a lot of competition, and you cant deny the issues faced in each book, did grow with the reader (and the characters).

Its akin to someone who watched Star Wars from episode 1-6 like I did. I thought the characters grew well, as the threat increased.
Meanwhile people who watched 3-6,1-3 thought the 'start' of the story was childish and silly. Yeah, because it was just 'life' not 'life or death' yet.

Many critics of HP seem to be comparing it to epics they've already read, aimed at much more advanced readers, or facing topics a primary schooler wouldnt have been able to grasp.

Rowlings 'style' is a lack of detail. Its actually really hard to do well.
Giving enough to paint a picture, with blanks your mind has to fill.

Your 'stretched his legs' example is key; did he walk? Run? Jog? Skip? You decide; all you know is that he left the room using his legs.

Its actually, imo, why the films werent as widely loved by the readers; it blew apart the world they'd invented for themselves.

Its like watching any of the Terry Pratchett shows, after reading the books. The witches look wrong. The elephants are the wrong size, etc etc. The writing letting you invent a world, was 'broken' by a fixed image.

Ill never try to convince people who dont like that style of writing, that "its good", because if you like accurate detailed writing, it'll never fit with your tastes.

Lord of the Rings was a great example of 'too much detail in the writing' for some, but, for others, it was a masterpiece, and translated well to film thanks to that.

But "the wizarding world" caught so many people, because kids imaginations are strong. And, turns out, so are a lot of adults. And after being force fed decades of "walking slowly, each footstep echoing against the hard walls", it was a nice change to get "stretching his legs down the empty stone hallway" and letting your mind swirl that into a non-specific reality.

But that style is not for everyone, and thats OK.
