Seemed like a good deal for a brand new handset - Unique Mobiles sells this handset for $579 outright, but this comes with 12 months of service. If you already have a postpaid account with Vodafone, use SAVE10 to get 10% off, and remember to check out Buckscoop/etc to see if you can save a bit more.

    This isn't a deal.
You might as well buy it outright and get a live connected plan. It will be better value.

    • $11 x 12 + 579 = $711. This is $588.

      • +11

$488 from all phones + $11 x 12 live connected plan = $620 with better reception and $500 worth of text and talk and 1.5 Gb data.

        • Mod, why was my neg removed?

And why are my comments being negged? Did I say something wrong?

A logical reply would be great.

        • +8

          Lets see:

          Outright $488 + LC plan $11 x 12 mths = $620

More credit & data, better reception

          Vodafail $20 x 12 + $29 x 11 = $559

Limited credit & minimum data, and really bad reception

So for $61 more (or $5.08 a month) you get much much more….I would go with what orange123 said.

And for the record, I have 2 Vodafail phones (BB9900 + GS2) working in Sydney CBD - drop outs galore, call fails, useless tech support (not to be racist but every call to the Indian Call Centre ends in abuse - please swith off phone, pull out battery, blah blah)

        • +2

Mate don't bother using logic in this community as half the users wouldn't be able to understand.

        • +4

@ orange123 if you get 6 or more negs on your comment, your neg against the deal is automatically revoked, the mods didn't remove it.

        • Ahh I didn't know that. Thanks.

  • -5

Agree!!!Optus got $19 plan +$10 monthly repayment for this phone with 24 months plan….Also,I believe Optus network should be alot better than Vodafail.

    • +8

This is over 12 months, has higher plan inclusions, and lower total cost ($588 vs $696). You do only get 12 months service vs 24, however.

    • -2

If you take this deal you will end up paying a total of $696. Sure you get an extra year's worth of service at $19 a month but you can get a year's service cheaper if you use some of those cheap prepaid deals like Hello Mobile.

I generally dislike long contracts, because android handset prices go down rather quickly due to increased competition, and it may end up being an attractive option to buy the handset outright when it drops low enough (e.g. Nexus) than be locked to a carrier for 24 months. 12 months is fine though.

If you're someone who upgrades phones a lot like me, 24 month contracts are a no go.

    • -3

Actually, all vodafone plans comes with 24months warranty.

I didn't understand why they were dubbed vodafail until I ordered two pre-paid handsets from a previous deal. It took me over 3 months, numerous calls and a final call to the TIO before I finally got refunded for a handset which they never managed to deliver, among many other screw ups, including a double-charge.

The reps are polite enough, but their departments are hopelessly disconnected, dept's. don't seem to follow up on issues passed from another, and they seem generally bewildered and inept. I just hope their post-paid is better than their pre-paid service.

      • +3

you' ll be surprised ( its far more worse )

  • +1

This is a good deal. However, I'm going to wait and see what effect Galaxy S3 and ICS upgrades have on the pricing of other Android phones such as this one. It might drive them down like what happened to Nexus. Then I'll bite.

    • +1

The new Galaxy S3 is almost out for the olympic games in London, I think most people are waiting to bite on that!

      • That's what I said. When it comes out it might drive down prices of other phones like this one, and I'll wait and see what happens. I don't imagine the S3 will be cheap but for someone who wants a different phone its value might be in reducing prices.

I also want to see the official specs and how it differentiates itself from the Nexus which is another ICS 720p screen.

  • Just for clarification, the VF websiet states that the xperia is is 3g quadband, ie works well on all networks. Is this correct?

    • +2

      That's correct, HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 (according to GSM Arena).

  • -5

forget phone specs, etc, Vodafone network is so crap, that you cant make/receive calls. If you can't ring /speak to ppl with ur mobile fone( even though its cheap ) , its defeats the purpose of having a mobile fone.

    • why neg with no commment ?!!

    • +1

you're essentially paying $9 for 12 months worth of service (as opposed to buying the phone outright) so I fail to see how that's a bad deal even if you can only use it 10% of the time! I agree though, here in Melbourne I didn't think it was that bad until I started travelling to the city every day for Uni.. now I can't get reliable data anywhere between the CBD and my suburb, but it tends to be pretty good in the CBD and at my house (annoyingly - means I'm unable to complain about terrible reception where I live and use it as a reason to break contract :/)

    • I am already on VF so I know what they are like.

  • +3

It is a good deal for people who want to pay via instalments.

But if you had the money up front, JB Hifi have been selling these for as low as $440 cash, and they scan at $484.

So it would be a better deal to get the handset from JB, pay $10.99 per month with Live Connected, much more calls & data on the Optus network for less money in total, and no contract.

    • "But if you had the money up front, JB Hifi have been selling these for as low as $440 cash, and they scan at $484."

Really? How does this work? Is the ticket price $484 and you tell them you'll pay cash and they drop it to $440? Which JB did you go to? Are they price matching someone, or do you always get discounts if you offer to pay by cash?

      • Just negotiation, same as any retailer. Always ask them if their sticker price is the best they can do. In the Whirlpool thread most people claim to have gotten it for around $450 from JBs, with some as low as $425.

        • I was given a ticket price of $484 at JB (Strand Arcade, Sydney) but also waiting to see prices of all these phones fall once SGS3 comes out…

        • -3

Not sure why you'd expect this to fall when the SGS3 comes out, they aren't even the same company. That's like expecting the SGS3 to fall when the iPhone 5 comes out.

        • +2

They both sell Android phones. Do they have to be from the same company for two products to be considered competitors? ISPs and Telcos are not the same company either. But guess what.. they do monitor what each other does.

iPhone is a different market altogether. It doesn't compete against other iPhones (unless you count the Aus Post 3GS) and phone for phone it is the #1 best selling phone ever made. No single Android phone would compete toe to toe with an iPhone. They have no need to reduce prices.

If the SGS3 is a better phone and more popular than anything Sony offers, surely there would be some pressure on Sony to be more competitive (e.g. by reducing prices)?

iPhone is a phone that will sell for the price Apple asks for regardless of what competition it faces. They do not need to compete on price with anyone. SGS3 competes for a distinct demographic to Apple, but if the iPhone 5 trounces it, it's very possible S3 will drop in price.

Xperia and Galaxy on the other hand do have a larger overlapping demographic with each other than with Apple.

with a free unlock this could be a good phone on Telstra

  • It's a good deal but only wish it was with another network

  • +1

Excellent deal, the phone outright is around $480, so you only pay $100 more over the 12 months to get $180 credit +200mb of data.

Plus this is an excellent phone! Vodafone I believe includes the HDMI cable and gives you a choice of the exclusive white version.

  • Is this phone lock to Vodafone network?

    • +1

Think if you were on contract they can unlock for free.

  • +1

omg this phone price is going down the hill, wish i didnt bought it for 498 at allphone

  • +1

This seems good, but I already bought the last SE Xperia Arc deal from vodafone and am using it now with my telstra sim. Cant stand vodafone - download speeds abt 20 kbps. Telstra easily gives me 150 kbps!

Now what is really going to be a game changer is Samsung galaxy S3. Now being called the father of all android phones :D

    • Hi i bought the arc from voda as well. Just wondering what did you do with the 12 month plan if youre using Telstra?

      • havent thought of any clever thing to do with it. For now I put the voda sim in the old phone and carry it arnd as a backup fone :)

        any other brilliant ideas?

i was thinking of calling voda and asking them how much it would cost me to break the contract. If it is reasonable, I might.

    • Kilobytes (kB) or kilobits (kb)? If it's kilobits then they're both awful. Sometimes I forget what it's like not being in Perth where Vodafone have all but finished up their network upgrades…

  • BTW how do you unlock? I know its free

  • oh btw, for people who are thinking about getting this for phone and not use voda, make sure you have a micro sim. And vice versa.

  • Has anyone actually received their order yet? Mine has been sitting in 'being processed' the past week.

    • The stores don't have stock, perhaps there is no stock in the warehouse either. I have been told that they are hoping to get stock this week.

      • Speaking of the devil, it arrived!

PS: you'll need to cut up the included standard sim card into the size of a mini sim (or pop into a voda shop to pick one up and call them to move the number over to the sim card).

Template to use to cut… http://www.macnotes.net/files/2010/06/micro-sim-stencil-ipad…

        • And I rang the store and mine is there as well. I am picking it up tomorrow, can't wait.
