I had to tune mine for the first time in ages the other day. Found many free apps (including from Fender) was questioning the need to buy a replacement for my old one with how convenient it was to just have it on the phone

Well your phone tuner relies on sound I imagine. Headstock tuners work by measuring vibration transmitted through the body. This means a headstock tuner can be used in a noisy environment - club, bar, concert, lounge room with TV, noisy kids, neighbour mowing the lawn etc.

As far as convenience goes, most people leave them attached to the headstock. Can't get more convenient than that. More convenient than having to go get your phone. Not saying phone tuners are worthless. I use them as well. They are just apples and oranges features-wise.

      • As a guitarist for the past 15 years. Moved to these over a phone app. Huge huge improvement, way more accurate and way more convenient than a phone.

  • I like the unitune/polytune clip. Not a bargain but it starts up fast and responds fast which is great if your using it regularly.

They had a recall related to Battery door cover not secure enough for the coin cell batteries recently so they can be hard to find locally.
