the cheapest 12th gen model for the GP76 (with a 12700h) costs $3149 and comes with only 16gb ddr4 ram and rtx 3060. So yes this is a very good deal. Far better gaming performance, even if the cpu is a generation old.

    • mux switch with 155w (not sure if its 140w+15w DB or else)- 3080 8gb

    • very good bios, desktop levels of customisation (looking at you amd and asus, cant do anything with the 5900hx 'unlocked' processor)

    • killer wifi6e

    • high refreshrate but only 1080p maybe a downside to some people

    • its an intel chip in a 17.3' chasis so yeah nah the battery is a UPS

    • limited ports despite being a 17.3' laptop, 3 usb A ports and 1 usb c with no TB4 capability, no sd or mini sd card slot

    • cpu cooling is questionable, only 2 heatpipes for the cpu, in the 10th gen jarrod tested-which throttled on both 'extreme' and 'balanced' preset profiles-all the way through to the new 12th gen model

On another note, do not hope too much gains for the 12th gen mobile chips. It will be a pretty nice increase, but nowhere near the desktop 11-12th gen gains to worth the extra $$$. Main reason being that the desktop side jump is due to both the introduction of P&E cores and the change from 14nm+++++++ to 10nm, however on the mobile side we already got the 14nm++++++ to 10nm update last gen, so the performance gains we get this gen wont be looking.

The 12th gen beats everything including the Apple M1 Max. That's a pretty big performance jump.

        • I think one of the key designers of the M1 chip got poached by Intel so it's a no brainer. In any case, good for competition I guess

Intel 12th gen is a significant jump even on mobile. Mobile CPUs are also using the hybrid architecture, for instance the i7-12700H has 6 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores. The E cores would also contribute to a notable increase in battery life on light duty tasks.

In a sense, the jump from 11th to 12th gen is revolutionary due to the change in CPU architecure, while the last few generations before that has been evolutionary.

The 12th gen i9 does outperform Apple's M1 Max but with a caveat. 250% power draw for 4% better performance i.e. M1 Max uses 40W while the i9 is consistently over 100W under full load.

The upgrade to DDR5 is worth waiting imo, it’s a quantum leap.

    • even if the cpu is a generation old.

Almost always a barely-perceptible difference, except this time. Once a decade anomaly.

    • only 16gb

Which is the correct amount given the performance gain and power usage of 32GB …

    • throttled on both 'extreme' and 'balanced' preset profiles

It's pointless comparing mobile CPU benchmarks because OEMs control performance to achieve whatever performance, battery or heat goals they want.

Better get the desktop version at this price

    • Yeah that previous XPS8950 dell ebay deal with 3080 for $3149 is much better performance. Hope next round they bring back more stock.

      • I got mine last week and it's a steal. A few things to note which were nice surprises:

        1. The GPU is an MSI reported as 1710 MHz but benchmarking revealed that during gaming it jumps up to as high as 1920Mhz and mostly around 1850 MHz. So it's on par with top of the range 3080s on the market. It has never gone over 72 degrees with all the benchmarks I've put it through.

        2. The case cooling is decent. Initially when using Turbo Boost Short Max at the full 241w TDP the fans jump to full throttle and get very noisy. I fixed this issue with Intel's overclocking software by reducing TBSM to 200w, which gives around 4.9GHz (lower than the 5.2 GHz) boost, but it's pretty much never needed, but when utilised the noise is about half as loud. Otherwise it runs at 27-30 decibels 95% of the time.

        • No need to upgrade the CPU cooler like the previous 8940 model?

          • @kaikor: If you want to get a very silent setup then you may want to. Also if you need the full 5.2GHz TBSM for longer and more often then you will want a cooler designed for a higher TDP. But for all other circumstances I don't think there's a need. The premium air cooler is designed by coolermaster for Dell systems and does a pretty good job. Mind you if you do want better then you will want a 360 AIO because pretty much every other cooler falls short at full throttle 5.2GHz and 241w TDP. That means a rebuild or external cooler.

            • @[Deactivated]: Thx for the tip, don't really care about the noise, most important is to keep the CPU cool enough to avoid thermal throttle.

For those who have access to salary packaging/salary sacrifice:

You can salary package a laptop, but can't with a desktop. Depending on your tax bracket, this brings the 'effective' price of the laptop down to ~ $2200.

Not saying this offsets the fact that the desktop version will be better, but given the choice of an identically specced desktop vs laptop at the same pre-tax price, I'd strongly consider salary packaging the laptop.

  • Crazy price.

I will say performance of the 3080 is disappointing (have the legion 7) but at this price point is very good

I'd wait though unless needing a laptop now.

Got my legion 7 in November but still wish I could have waited for ddr5 / 12th gen / 40 series combo.

    • Prices for 12th gen i7, dd5 and 3070Ti is like 1.3k more. Hmm.

  • Has anyone used these laptops with higher graphic cards for crypto? No desktop pc intended

    • Yes mate, have exact model with 3070, does about 65.xx at 110w.
