What Is a Pink Slip or Esafety Check for?

My vehicle was turning over 5 years old and gets to renew rego so I needed a pink slip inspection done.

I went to one of the local service centres that I’d booked weeks before, and the mechanic there said he’s working alone today (as others are called in sick) and busy, came out and looked at my car, checked the odometer and said it’s all good, done I paid $42 for a minute job.

I appreciate that it’s done quickly but at least I was expecting somethings are done properly like head lights, tyres, oil leaks etc before the report is issued?

Is it acceptable doing the safety job this way?

Definitely not supposed to be done that way but it's not uncommon.

OP's car passed brake efficiency test by visual inspection.

      • You can shake the unit in the right way and get a pass to submit.

most newer ones have GPS tracking and the RTA/RMS dictate which road the brake test is to be done on.
the 2 units i used most were either lift your leg to 90 degrees and place the machine on your thigh, squeeze the sensor with your hand and drop your leg slowly and then raise it. perfect 45kph test everytime. The other machine i used you had to put the machine on the table, push the pedal pad against a stack of paper floor mats while tilting the machine through 90 degrees and back to flat, that was about 40-42kph test speed, and a 100% pass rate.

          • @Brian McGee: Ahh interesting. I actually haven't seen it done for a fair while. Not surprised they've gotten a little smarter.

What Is a Pink Slip or Esafety Check for?

To enable you to get your registration renewed.

While old mate has obviously decided to slide one through and make a quick $42 (not to mention doing you a favour), these things have no real standing anyway.

    • make a quick $42

I imagine, RMS takes a big portion of this (directly or indirectly).

Because your car is 5 years old is why he probably didn’t give it much thought. Check the lights work, check the tyres aren’t bald, slap the roof and mention about how many pink slips this car could hold and send it on its way.

Now, if your car was a 12yo and had 285,000km on it, he may have cared a little more about checking it out.

Yep exactly. A dodgy job for sure but he probably assessed the risk of your car not passing it against how busy he was and made a judgement call.

  • What Is a Pink Slip or Esafety Check for?

    In NSW…
    Prove your brakes work…
And maybe your lights if your are lucky.

    That's about it.

And to let mechanics make a few easy bucks for 5 mins work.

    • +1

That simple checks were not done. I genuinely thought I would use that place for my car service outside dealer. No way now.

    • 5 mins work, and making sure credentials are up to date, investing in the machinery to do it.

      Prove your brakes work

Stopping in the right spot at the workshop.

maybe your lights if your are lucky

Possibly saw you turning into the workshop …

  • the fact that a pink slip is not required in every state tells me its probably over kill

when was the last time you checked if your brake lights were working? It amazes me the number of cars on the road (in NSW) that have at least one light not working.

      • well when I get my car regularly serviced they check those things for me

        safety belts, lights, tyre pressure.

        • You think the average death trap on the roads is getting serviced at all, let alone regularly?

          • +1

@robberbutton: Speaking as the owner of a 1990 Deathtrap Hatch, I avoid servicing because if someone tells me something is wrong I'll have to fix it. :)

    • Living on nsw and seeing what utter …boxes are still on the roads here I’d much rather they had the inspections. Not everyone gets their car checked by a mechanic regularly, so an annual inspection makes up for some of that.

Dont complain he saved you a fortune in repairs…

The whole thing is a joke. Not even needed in Vic or Qld. Yet which state has the highest road toll per capita…oh, its NSW

    • +2

Thats cause of (profanity) drivers, not unsafe cars.

      • +1

Are you saying that your state is so crap at driving that if they didn’t tax the poor do annual safety checks the road fatalities would be even worse?

Lol, maybe if more people drove shit cars they’d actually be better drivers…

  • 20yr old landcruiser gets a visual pink slip signoff… Bald tyres and brake pads were ignored but getting them done coz they need to be. 😉

Would you prefer he take an in depth look at your car and give you a list of 50 things wrong with it that you can fix? Of course, he conveniently can fix all of it for you.

Stupid system, but be glad that he's not taking you for a ride.

What is needed in Australia is the equivalent of the UK MoT test. 3 year old cars undergo dozens of checks. Lights, brakes, emissions, seatbelts, wipers, fuel system, exhaust, body structure, suspension etc.
Annual test, compulsory and it weeds out the clunkers & plain dangerous vehicles
Too many shit heaps on Australian roads…..

    • +3

Id like to see exhaust gas testing on all vehicles. the amount of trucks and 4wd's belching out black smoke when they put the gas down

      • I second that… will remove a few backyard modded p platers off the road too.

The scheme is abused from both sides. Some mechanics don't do a proper job examining a car, while other's will use a pink slip as an opportunity to make stuff up and charge a customer for safety work which is not required, ie, rear rotors needing replacement (on a car which has drums).

    • +2

You do know that you don’t have to get any work they mention done by them? You just thank them for their time and take it somewhere else or do it yourself.

You are also well within your rights to take it somewhere else and have it inspected independently and if there is a discrepancy, you can take that up with the inspection station or with your local states registration agency.

My old Astra didn't pass once, the headlight plastic was apparently too fogged up from old age/UV.

They wanted to replace the entire headlight assemblies for hundreds of dollars…I said no thank you, got a headlight restoration kit from SCA for about $50 (or there abouts), fixed them and took it back for a pass.

      • this is correct. however a lot of them employ scare tactics or claim for work that doesn't need to be done.

        • If you have a regular mechanic they can be a little more lenient.

  • Depends how anal the operator is, some will have a look at the lights, wipers and tyres then $42 later, you're on your merry way. I had one guy failed my car for a cracked lower control arm bushes (that's fair), another warned me my inoperable driver’s window is an instant failure (yeah ok) and another said to pass my car, he needs an insurance claim number to put down in the notes as pending repairs just in case they get pulled up later on how come he passed my car with body damage.
