Thanks to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic 1988 Action Figure $12 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Kmart, it created a massive sense of nostalgia for me. Sadly, I missed out on this deal.

I knew from some comments in that deal these babies could be had for $14 RRP at Big W, so I didn't bite.

Not to worry, I was able to reclaim some of my childhood memories again through 20% off Toys & LEGO (Online Only) @ BIG W + 15% Cashback ($150 Min Spend, $25 Cap, 6-10pm AEDT Today) via ShopBack which alerted me to check the figures again at Big W. Low and behold, they're discounted to $11.20 each. Caveat is ordering online is a lucky dip!

Managed to pick up 2 of each character via my local Big W C&C. After making the order I called them a bit later and spoke to CS at the pick up store location to kindly request if they could do best efforts to not give me 8x Leo's. They obliged, shout out to that store (Doncaster VIC)… Was a kid in the candy shop when I found 2 of each character when picking up!

Not sure about you, but I wasn't going to buy $150 worth of TMNT's for 15% cash back… Nor did I plan to wait until 6pm for a 5% cash back! Your call on this one…

Happy with $11.20 a pop to relive my childhood again :D

oh man these bring back memories.

I still dont know why Donatello was so dark compared to the others.

    • +5

He was the black sheep of the family….😅

    • +5

The toys were made in different shades to help make them distinctly different from each other, believing parents would not buy their children four identical toy turtles.

      • +10

You obviously haven't seen the Simpsons episode with the Malibu Stacey doll.

These all had different weapons. that's more than enough reason to buy another one

        • +7

          "She has a new hat!"

      • It's been awhile…but didn't they all have different head band colours as well as different weapons?

        • +2

Yeah. But I googled it after the question here and what I posted is what I found out. Makes sense from a marketing perspective.

        • +1

Yes. But in the original comics, they all wore red bandanas! These turtles are sell outs!

    • +2

also looks blue instead of purple.

      • -2

Yeah something is wrong here. They are certainly the 1988 characters as opposed to the new ones, however are not correct to the actual 1988 action figures.

        • +1

          They look pretty authentic.

          • @FabMan: I came to say this.
Looks authentic, just that they did a crappy job with Donatello.

    • Initially I thought you were talking about his temperament and I thought of his dark brooding intelligence

    • +1

      Donu-tella. Dark n yummy.

    • +3

I still dont know why Donatello was so dark compared to the others

The first release of TMNT toys was based on the comic books, not the TV show.

The TV show turtles all have the same green skin tone, but TMNT got popular so fast that there wasn't time to re-design TV-show-specific toys just for the show, and they were flying off shelves anyway, so they just kept the comic designs for a while.

      • This isn't true. The real reason was stated above by @theory
It annoyed me so much that you both posted different reasons and I had to waste 2 minutes of my life finding who was wrong and making this post.

        • Do you have any specific sources for that? I couldn't find any.

          Wikipedia says:

The first three series of figures took obvious influence from the original Mirage comics: the Turtles lacked pupils and had bulging muscles with large veins, their bodies were shorter, more stocky and their beaks longer and more pointy like in the comics.

Which is pretty obvious if you look at the cartoon vs the toys vs the comics, but I wouldn't be surprised if the trick-parents-into-buying-all-four story is also true, too.

I had a Michaelangelo figurine that had a rip cord that would make the sound of "Cowabunga!", But it sounded more like "Kawweeeunnggæ"

Any idea how to order 4 online and not get double ups? This whole "Products Selected at Random" sounds like I'll end up with 4 x Dons.

And if i remember from my childhood, Leo's swords are super fragile at the hilt, so go easy with them when playing!

    • Buy more than 4 and hope for the best? Can refund them later right?

    • +1

See my comments in the OP… I called the pick up store CS to ask if they could do their best to get one of each (in my case 2 of each). They were helpful and fulfilled this.

In any case, if I did get double ups I would have looked to exchange once at the store, or if they didn't have the characters left was looking to get a refund. Was a win for me in this case!

      • I got so childhood excited I just saw the price, and immediately clicked the link! Didn't even see your comments Soz.

    • Yeah, I agree with your interpretation about double-ups. The price is good, but it's not great that it's and online only price, but if you buy online then there's no way for you to choose which characters you get!

Edit: Just saw OP's reply above about calling the store. Thanks for the clarification

That's just because of BigW 's crappy website. I bet all 4 have different SKUs which should have been added as individual products, they could have then made a 5 product that includes all 4 SKUs so that you can actually purchase a set.

    • -1

C'mon Big W… Is is that hard to pick from 4?

Just like in Primary school… no one wanted to be that nerd Donatello.

Mickey was always 1st, then it was a tie for Raph and Leo.

I can't stand when shops group several product variations into one listing and write "we'll send you what ever we want and you'll accept it because you're an Australian consumer and we're an Australian retailer and therefore don't give a shit about customer service or having an ordering system and logistics system that can handle anything above the most basic of orders" (obviously not what it actually say that).

    Amazon wouldn't pull this shit.

    • -2

The problem with this isn't actually the retailer sometimes. Sometimes these products have generic barcodes, lol so you try making specific listings with it like that and track inventory. Plus they probably hire some teenager to do data entry lol

      • +1

I just checked Amazon. They have individual listings. They figured out a way to do it.

Sounds like Australian retailers are just lazy.

  • buy as many as you can, and then do returns.

Bring back He-man & Masters of the Universe

      • Man he looks a bit odd… why can’t they just reproduce the 80s version :)

        • +1

Wished they brought back the Panosh Place Voltron Lion Force!

I still have the OG one, but is a bit worse for wear :(

          • +1

@AnDyStYLe: I've still got my Voltron. Pretty decent nick too. Safely stored away from my kids. :)

            • +1

@trappy76: My son has mine after I played with it as a kid. Still works but some bits are missing. Voltron, he-man, and ninja turtle toys were the essential toys of any child born in the 80s

              • @klonky: Yeah I love my 80s toys. Years ago I started recollecting the MOTU range. Got a good 80% of them but the others are so expensive now. So good.

  • +1

Great! Can you believe that my 5 year old daughter loves it. Will buy a set for her.

  • +2

Not being able to choose is a real bummer. I want one of each but I’m not going to risk 2-4 of a kind.

  • +2

They really need to sell the individual baddies like bebop and rocksteady!

  • Thanks grabbed 12, hopefully I get at least one of each.

  • +2

Come on, bring back Rocksteady as well. Loved that figurine as a kid

  • I remember the original ones used to be quite dense plastic. Any chance this is the same or they made of significantly lighter plastics now?
