  • Anyone know if these are actually any good?

    • +3

I can't comment on these particular models, but I do have the older Q8 and another sofirn torch and for the price they are great, especially including batteries, which are quite good.

      • Thanks fellas. Might buy one for no reason.

    • +2

I have an SC31 and it is just brilliant.

    • i think it's a bit overrated but still worth buying. you can only see stuff within 100 m and then it drops off quickly. the lumens rating on all chinese torches seems questionable.

      • +2

I don't really have a need for anything this powerful regardless, but considring it comes with usb c chargeable batteries it might just be good to have around the house.

My last torch (which I still have) was those huge angry cop type torch, not very ergonomic lol

        • hahaha

          • +1

@Savas: Bought :p throwing that thing out. I have other weapons I can use in case of home invasion haha

            • +1

@Dvbargain: the Q8 Pro can definitely blind any intruders for the next home invasion.

      • +2

If you want distance, you need different type of lens/reflector. But more distance= less spread. Torches with great distance are kind of useless for everyday use unless you truly only want to see a long way away.

    • Depends on your definition of good.

SP36 BLF may come with some LH351D LEDs with a nicer tint, high CRI and a variety of CCTs (2700K, 4000K, 5000K) compared to a Q8 Pro.

I won an SC21 during a GAW, for reaching 50 members, on the Sofirn Torch AU group. I post these deals from the group on ozbargain voluntarily though.

SC21 is awfully similar in size to an SC31 Pro with an 18350 tube. If you don't mind a slightly larger torch then you may get more value out of an SC31 Pro and longer battery life.

One potential downside with the SC31 Pro is that it comes with a complex Anduril user interface. SC21 has a simple user interface.

The SST40 LED in an SC31 Pro is fairly low CRI and doesn't look as nice as LH351D that was in my SC21. That said, I'm a bit of a tint snob and put a Nichia 219B sw35 in my SC21 for a nicer tint.

      • Look ima be honest I just wanted something that made light and had usb c charging, but that's a fantastic response :p I bought the SC21.

        • +2

I found that a Google Pixel charger with USB-C PD worked ok for charging my SC21. But an Anker cable was too wide for the hole. My Pixel cable fits ok.

          SC21 is tiny 😁

Be sure to twist the head of the SC21 by half a cm so that it cuts the power if storing the torch without using it for months or it might slowly drain the battery.

  • Dang hey 11,000 lumens

      • +12

Much better to shine in the faces of those who don’t care about the vulnerable in our society.

          • @tharlow: Wear Your Mask: The Urine Test https://imgur.com/4X5tdyn

          • @tharlow: Ah yes, the meta analysis that isn't. The throwing out there of random bad studies that are conducted in completely different environments, mainly with the presence of a multitude of aseptic techniques and measures. And ignoring the multitude of evidence and the different bodies that say they do work.

  • Was looking at the weight for the SC21

    Item Weight β€Ž57.2 kg

    Wait what?!

    • Obviously, most of that weight is the battery. It will run on full brightness for at least 2 years… or months. Possibly hours. Fo sho

    • Mine is closer to 60g on the kitchen scales :)

  • If you are going to spend a bit, check if it has pulse width modulation (pwm). Pwm torches aren't nice to walk with.

    • +1

Yes, I agree β€” absolutely no flashing in public

  • Great torches, use 2 models of the headlamps for work, have the biggest beast which takes 26650's and is nuts powerful… don't rate their branded 18650 batteries though, ordered one with the last head torch and it can't even keep up with the demand of the torch it came with, garbage…. the 26650's that came with the monster torch seem to hold up okay though…

    • Any recommendations for the best 18650 batteries? Thanks

      • Samsung 30Q 18650 3000mAh 15A button top rechargeables.

      • Sony Murata VTC6
        Samsung 30Q

If you just want more capacity and don't have a torch that requires cells capable of higher currents then Sanyo NCR18650GA.

These are mostly sold as flat tops. SP36, Q8 etc may require button tops so that the head can screw on safely without damaging the cells.

I can confirm this torch really shines.

Any deals on the BLF FT1?

    • A 5% discount and $29 promo code seems to have been added: XFH8AAYA = $91.64

  • I have a SC31 and highly rate them for the price

Bought a SP40 also (head torch) and didnt like it (still micro usb) and wasnt as nice as the SC31

  • Have to resist the urge to buy a Q8 pro
I'm currently waiting for a SP36 BLF 5000K Anduril 2.0 to be delivered
I'm pretty excited Anduril 2.0 looks very advanced

  • Which one recommend for catching crabs in the pitch dark water?

    • One person over on the Sofirn Torch AU group on FB got an SP36 Pro and made a holder with an old garden hose handle and PVC pipe so that they can use the torch for fishing. But I digress…

Probably a headlamp like an SP40 to keep your hands free?

  • I have the SC31 pro and SC21. SC21 is decent though I’d prefer something with Anduril, possibly a SC31 pro with a short tube and 18350.

  • I have the older BLF Q8 model and Sofirn SP36. Both are great torches but I managed to get them slightly cheaper than these prices.

Perhaps demand has kept these priced high?

  • looking for a similar torch with a magnetic charge base. anyone? plug in usb wear over time and get crap in them.

    • The olight baton III has this. I have the II. It is tiny and bright

      • cheers. bought the Batton Pro 2000 at $71.

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/164799556311

        • That should do nicely, it's a bit longer than the baton - just be aware that the 2000 lumens is a turbo mode and only sustainable for short times - the output will ramp down due to thermal ramping.

  • Thanks OP, grabbed on to throw in the glovebox in case of emergency

  • Do they make a cheapish one.

My kids (or probably me) keep losing compact torches and paying $32 is a bit much

    • Buy the kids each an olight i3E EOS. Cheap and awesome. The kids will love them.

Sofirn C01S AAA keychain and Sofirn SP10V3 AA on sofirnlight.com or Sofirn Official on AliExpress.

I'd probably stick to AAA and AA NiMH batteries instead of using a 14500 3.7V Li-ion cell. Li-ion cells are much more dangerous.

Olight AU fans might have a dozen i3E or i1R 2 keychain torches BNIB. They're included for free a few times a year when they have a sale.

  • Sorry for the noob question but how does it compare to this?

I don't have any knowledge about the flashlights and looking to buy a reasonably priced compact flashlight.

I don't have an SC21 (yet), but do have an SC31 and a couple of Wuben C3's.
The C3 is a great little torch, I find it very hard to resist buying another when they regularly come down to the $25-ish mark.
One of the main differences you'll notice is size - the C3 uses an 18650 battery (65mm long) while the SC21 uses a 16340 (34mm long). Hence the SC21 is a shorter unit overall. Great size - I almost always have something this size with me (like a BLF A6 or Sofirn SC31, either of which with a short body tube). However the larger battery in the C3 will have a larger capacity, hence longer runtime.
The SC21's operating button is on the side, where the C3 is a tail-clicky with the button in the tail cap. I personally prefer the latter.
The SC21 however has a magnetic tail cap - great for holding it in place (while you're working inside a comms rack, for example).
Then you could get in to discussions about the user interface, modes, etc - but let's leave that discussion for later :)

      • Thanks for the detailed reply - are both of these similar in terms of build quality etc? And how easy is it source the replacement batteries or extra batteries - quick google search came up with a lot of results for 18650 but not as many results for 16340 so unsure if I should go ahead and purchase the one in OP.

        • Well again, I don't have an SC21 yet - I just got the shipping notification half an hour ago :) - but I don't imagine it'll be any different from my other Sofirns. Both those and the C3s are great build quality, especially for their price point.
Replacement 16340 batteries are no problem - I just jumped on to eBay and found plenty. As always, quality varies and some research is recommended.
I'll also add that I've found Sofirn's after sales support terrific - I bought a Q8 a while back which developed a small fault, they were really helpful and shipped me a replacement really quickly.

          • +1

@guyvb: Thanks mate, I got one too, appreciate the detailed responses. And I was asking more in regards to Sofirn vs Wuben build quality and you have answered that question as well. I would have paid a couple of extra bucks happily if build quality was significantly different but I also got sold on the after sales support and value that more than anything else :)
