Campervan, Motorhome Rental Melbourne

So ever since my kids saw a Peppa Pig video where they went on a motorhome holiday, they have been bugging me to go rent one.

I have been checking around websites like britz, apollo, maui etc.. and is it normal to be quoted like $500-$700 per night for a 4 berth? I mean that's 5 star hotel price. Why do i recall it was much cheaper before.

Anyone rented one before? Worth the fun?

Thanks.

Why do you think prices are so expensive??

    • Probably demand and supply.

collusion with ABC kids. they run that Peppa pig episode every week so it gets parents to rent a motorhome. Jack up the price and boom.

  • Try something like Wicked Campers, they seemed cheaper when i last looked.

    • Nice. Will give that a try too.

I did an across country trip in a 6berther a few years ago. At that time those companies you mention all cost $300+/day for 6 weeks. I ended up hiring from an owner on one of the caravan rental sites - I can't remember the name but a search shows a few - might have been privatecaravanhire.com.au - for a bit over half that, and it included a whole bunch of extra gear too: genny, BBQ, table, chairs, tools, etc. Went to pick it up, he even threw in a small car (getz) to tow behind. It probably helped that he was going to pick it up from the other side and bring it home on a holiday himself, so he wanted the car. The extra small car was fantastic for when you park somewhere for a few days. Came with some type of roadside assist which we never needed to use. Called the owner a few times with questions and he was great. Our clan likes to holiday, including road trips o/s, but we all agree doing nothing but bludging and going to the beach for 6 weeks was the best holiday ever.

    camplify.com.au

  • Check out the the re-location offers for different rental companies.
Maybe not a real holiday as you have a limited time for point to point travel, but will certainly give the kids a taste of the experience.
Normally free to rent and also a contribution towards the fuel cost

    • Good idea particularly if OP isn’t actually into vans. It will be so rushed and stressful that the kids will never want to do it again…

Always a risk though .. flew to Adelaide from Melb having booked a relocation ADEL > MEL and booked sites along the trip back.
Van was canceled during flight !

      • Could have been worse - Dan could have thrown one of his snap lock-downs and closed the Victorian borders to ALL inbound traveler's. You would have been stranded in SA!

        • this was a few years ago pre-covid!
