PIA is owned by Kape Technologies whom are known to be dodgy. Big NO if you care about privacy.

    https://restoreprivacy.com/kape-technologies-owns-expressvpn…

You're being paid to use their VPN for a reason. Because YOU are the product.

    • Well damn!

Any suggestions for a better VPN?

      • PIA, this kind of old news, if you dig deep into any VPN, they all have link to something dodgy.

But here are all the pros:
        - cheap (as you already know)
        - reliable
        - easily configure with any planform
        - can have multiple accounts (can share)
        - servers in many countries.

I don't use Netflix streaming services so, cant comment on that

    • but but, you're getting paid! its not even just free, you're getting paid to use it!

      /s

      • Not getting paid to use it. Getting paid to sign up! Who said anything about using it ;P

15% return* in 3 months… Not too shabby

        *this is not financial advice

  • I signed up to Surfshark a couple of weeks ago and noticed a spiked in spam emails and calls. Not happy.

  • Can someone actually recommend a good VPN that isn't owned by Dodgy Bros Inc.?

    • +2

Mullvad? Only one that comes to mind. Also 'Oeck' seem to be pretty solid.

      • +1

Mullvad is great, have been using it for a few months without any issues, I like that they don't require you to give them your email to use it.

    • +2

      No such a thing.

Data is the currency of the information age. The Gold even given it's "mined". There is not a single company on this planet with access to data which can be trusted. But you use them knowing that because we don't have a choice. So it's a question of which one has the most to lose if they inappropriately use your information and go with those.

      • I love it when people trying to sound knowledgeable encourage others to setup ome of these vpn service on their router. It's the opposite of security, as you're funneling all your data through an unknown entity.

And those who encourage people to use a VPN HQ'd outside a 5/9/14 eye country,🙄 unless you're doing something to attract the attention of Federal law enforcement agencies, then you're actually better off having one HQ'd in USA or EU, as they have much better privacy, consumer protection & public disclosure laws.

If you're using it for protection in a public wifi network (as people should), then you're best off setting one up at home & VPN'ing into that & back out your ISP (Synology & QNAP nas's and some routers can be setup in a few minutes).

Lastly if you're just using it to geo-relocate (e.g. streaming/buying stuff), install another browser (firefox/edge/Vivaldi), only use it when VPN'ing, using private/incognito mode, then clear the cache/memory when done, then shutdown the VPN.

There are always risks, but you can limit them.

        • You sound like you know what you doing.

Can you tell me if this is a good setup? I want to use a raspberry pi with Wireguard so I can access my network on the go and with PiHole.

          Is this safe to do?

          • @ChickenDinner123: You can use docker in raspberry pi
            https://hub.docker.com/r/itsdaspecialk/pia-openvpn/
once this set up, you can use vpn as proxy , something like SwitchyOmega so you can use VPN when even you need off your browser.

Or If you want to use torrents, then get a torrents docker and make it depend on VPN

rest of the traffic goes as normal.

          • @ChickenDinner123: potentially one of the preconfigured routers from GL.iNet would keep things simple and intuitive to use

they run specials fairly often on these forums.

I can't speak for all their portable range but the 750 and 1300 have hardware switches to turn on/off the VPN connection, in addition to blocking all WAN traffic if VPN is not engaged

you can also wifi tether, USB tether and usb dongle or LAN port share internet on these devices (depending upon hardware allowances)

          • @ChickenDinner123:

You sound like you know what you doing.

Nah, I just know enough to understand when people are BS'ing.

Yep that'll work a treat. Maybe have a look at Tailscale. Single user (20.devices) setup is free. Easy to setup (uses wireguard) hooks into raspberry pi-hole too.

            https://tailscale.com/kb/1114/pi-hole/

It was apparently setup by some ex-google security engineers, so should be fairly safe.

    • What are you using it for?

  • I unfortunately have a couple of years left on my subscription, bought before the sale.
I only really use it to sail the high seas on a machine dedicated to sailing. I don’t use it on any other devices.
Will it be ok to continue using it for that purpose until my subscription expires?
If not I’ll look at a different vpn provider as per the recommendations above, maybe

  • i am okay with 80pa or 99% cashback. But 115pa cashback!? sounds too good to be true.

the only reason that could happen is 'we' are the product, not 'customer' :D
