  • is this WI-FI locke to Vodafone Sim Card only ?

    • Should work with any other carrier using the Vodafone network,

but most likely locked out of Optus and Telstra of course.

      • Well. I hope there will be some software available on eBay to unlock and make it open to operators other than Vodafone.

        • Why bother. Just get a decent unlocked one so all bands are covered and easier.

Could spend hours + $$ to unlock this, then find out it only partially works for Telstra/Optus.

If this deal is good for you and you have lot's of time, go for it. I prefer to have one of each modem,

can get them on sale often.

I bought this for $10 from AusPost (previous OzB post about 2-3 yrs ago, model R216), with a 30-day 5GB card thrown in. Once used the SIM, tried a Telstra and an Optus SIM; both worked. Just need to change the network via the control panel (via browser).

  • Just a reminder: Nowadays, prepaid SIMs DO EXPIRE. While you "might" be able to argue and get some support from Vodafone, it will involve getting another SIM and the support staff could come up with excuses (cannot transfer the credit right away because the new SIM activation takes 30 minutes so call back 30 minutes later etc… and that's assuming you have a spare, blank SIM which has not yet expired).

So get this if you plan to use it soon. Voda support staff can be clueless sometimes and insists the SIM expiration (12 months) is based on manufacturing date. That's just pure BS. However, how exactly is that 12 months calculated? For these clearance type items, clearly the SIM pack included would be older batch.

    • This is incorrect.
The SIMs bundled with these products, and the SIMs on the shelves on their own, will only expire when the Network does. So, one day when Telcos decide to switch off 4G and even 5G (won't happen anytime soon) then the SIMs will be redundant.
The SIMs that are bundled with this specific product will be in circulation for years.
This is not a clearance item, it only launched as a trial into Officeworks before christmas - Total value of this bundle is $249. Even at the Bundle RRP of $169 it's a great deal.

      • So, Vodafone do have SIMs which do not expire and yet they sell prepaid SIMs to customers which do expire?

I had a quite frustrating experience with Vodafone CSR with an expired SIM last week. I still feel it is a brave statement to state the SIM inside each of these will not expire until 4G is switched off completely. I also recall having to chuck away a SIM pack included in a Vodafone pocket Wi-Fi 3G. Pretty sure 3G was still active at the time.

Also, if this just started Christmas, then it is disappointing that this modem (guessing it is an older modem) has a slowish, dated 4G chipset. 150Mbps….

        • The credit expires.

looks like its a cat4 modem. id go for (a minimum of) cat6 with carrier aggregation
unsure if modem is unlocked/locked, may differ between retailer

If you’ve had your device for less than 6 months there’s a $50 unlocking fee.
If you’ve had your device for over 6 months there’s a $25 unlocking fee.

you can get better value if you dont need the 12month prepaid plan. check ozb for data options
    eg $0, $0.01, $1, $2.90, ~$5-$8 sims…etc
then purchase the modem with a cheaper bundle:
