Another movie player that is free for a limited time
We've been really spoiled for choice in free movie players this past week with
-aceplayer
-gplayer
-and now PlayerXtreme™ HD

So which players are the best?
I don't know but since it is free for a limited time, just get them all and try it for yourself.

===
btw
if anyone bought AVplayer HD, buzzplayer, oplayer or whatever player, can you post a comment if whether it is any better in terms movie playback performance for 720p and 1080p
and if it has any audio sync issues or slowdown.. and is it worth paying $2.99 for avplayerhd etc.. or if these free players are good enough..

  • I've been using is app for a few months now and it's great.

  • sorry i'm new to all this stuff…

what is the best / easiest way to stream audio and video files from my computer wirelessly to my iphone / iPad? (without having to d/l the files onto my devices)

A quick google found "TVMobili"…is this the way to go?
Or can you just access stuff through a browser?

    • +1

      Air Video app?

      • won't work on a NAS, server runs on a PC or Mac…

    • If the videos you got are MP4 AAC 720p, then you can stream it using a low power linux box and miniDLNA (UPNP) or Samba sharing. MP4 720P AAC is the native format supported by iOS, hardware decoding.

If the videos are in other formats, you'll need to use something like PS3 Media Server (UPNP) to do on the fly encoding, you need something core 2 duo or faster processor, the videos will be trans-coded on demand, and needs some computing power.

Streaming 720p or higher resolution you'll need wireless N router, better to work in true 300Mbps 40MHz channel width or dual band 2.4GHz/5GHz router (150Mbps works, not the best).

Im negging this. Why? cause you have to pay for certain "features" - just going off the Top IAP list:
    * PlayerXtreme Pro - $2.99 (theres another version ontop of premium? no way!)
    * Access network drive - $0.99 (really…)
    * x12 Volume boost - $0.99 (i hope they designed it with extremely low volume, otherwise value for money would mean blown eardrums. again, dodgy…)
    * Subtitles - $0.99 (sigh, no foreign media for me i guess!)
    * Folder Guard - $0.99 (no protecting the pRon stash!)

I hope my humour above has made this an enjoyable read as you skim over and fork out the few dollars for AvPlayerHD - a much more feature rich and superior play to this empty husk of a software!

    • yeah I just found now that u need to pay more for extra features
which would cost more than avplayer hd

I guess aceplayer is probably the best free player so far…
since it gave all these features for free…

but if u just use it as a standalone player than it is pretty similar to gplayer which also lacks smb streaming..

      • AV Player is great :D Plays every format & subtitle file that I throw at it, image quality & framerate is fantastic & you can transfer media from your PC to iPhone via wifi without requiring additional software or converting/compressing.

My only issue with AVPlayer is that you can't use it with the Atomic web browser app (that can download vids to your iPhone) - instead only Oplayer is compatible, not sure why. I've got Oplayer too but I don't like it much - there's nothing really wrong with it, I just prefer AVPlayer because I use wifi transfers more often :P

in regards to 720p 1080p performance - here is a tip: Apple restricts hardware decoding to mp4 files, you can however, repackage an mkv into an mp4 file and it will hardware decode smooth as butter!

    e.g. 2gb 720p mkv takes about 1.5min to "repackage" into mp4 on my e8400.

the software to repackage is called rebox.net

    • thanks

so 1080p will play without stutter and audio synce issues issues if I repackage it?

also does av player hd play all 720p without issue?
I know 1080p still has issues, like with all players except apples

I hate apple's stupid policy with hardware decoding to only mp4.
so they can get more ppl to buy their movies..

does android play 1080p mkv more smoother? on the new tablets..like transformer prime/infinity

      the only downside of repacking
is there will be two copies of the movies on the hdd
unless i delete it immediately..after transferring to the ipad

      • on my new ipad (ipad 3) 720p plays with a bit of stutter (raw mkv), but after repackaging, plays smooth. AVplayerHD lets me know when its hardware decoding or not.

i just tried a 1920x816 file (close enough) and in the brief 5min (i.e. not a full extensive test!) i found it completely smooth and no audio out-of-sync issues.

repackaging the mkv is annoying but takes a min or two (depending on your cpu and hdd) - once you drag and drop into the app via iTunes (as opposed to syncing) you can just delete the repackaged version and archive your original.

i would like to think android have 1080p down - considering there arent any android tabs at 1080p or more res yet, we will have to see (TF Infinity and GT11.8 will have this res to play at true 1080p).

      • My Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 7.7 can both play 1080p mkvs smoothly with full hardware acceleration. Whilst the screens on the devices themselves aren't 1080p, they can output 1080p via HDMI.

Team it with a 64gb NTFS formatted microSD card and it's a winner =)

    • excellent tip thanks :)

    • anyone have a suggestion like rebox.net for a mac?

edit: after an hour or so of reading there are several with subtler and iFlicks sounding the best.

      • How about VMware

  • "worthy of the elegant iPhone." - lol

  • -2

You have to pay for a program to watch mkvs, and nothing will hardware decode unless it is a mp4?

Oh you poor, poor, Apple people.

    • Use PS3 Media Server and N router, all your media files do on the fly encoding while streaming out, servers iPad, iphone, PS3, XBOX360, Android Phones, your smartTV as well.
And you don't have to spent time on repacking/converting. But you do need to pay for some more on electricity bill

      • How's that go on 3g?..

  • Nickel and diming with in-app payments for random features. Not a bargain at all.

  • What I care about is UPNP support, subtitles (miniDLNA for 720P MP4 AAC/ PS3MediaServer for on the fly encoding).
    I'd say Aceplay doing well

  • +1

This is not a bargain at all! I paid $2.99 for AnyPlayerHD and i love it. I downloaded PlayerX and AcePlayer and both of them are crap compared to AnyPlayerHD. AnyPlayerHD plays the movie very fast, easy to use and supports full screen tv output. AcePlayer on the other hand doesn't play the movie quite properly via tv out.

  • +1

Nothing beats "Buzz Player" if you want to watch any movie without re-encoding it. (including streaming from your NAS or home network)
AVPlayerHD is also good but doesn't stream (But is the best standalone player)

Seriously.. you guys are missing out.. try Buzz!

    • Can't agree more with dre10g. I been using Buzz Player since its inception and compare to all others, it is still the best apps for video for iPhone/iPad. Hence, I haven't seen it on Sale or go Free.
