Whirlpool forum is out of control

The whirlpool forum is out of control. Its full of bullies and trollers with mods who protect the bullies.

I've been a member of that forum since 2002.

Has anyone else experience this?

Is the ozbargin forum a lot better?

Well I’d say a lot of ozbargainers are either ex whirlpool or use both. I will say though - Seems everyone on whirlpool is on at least 200k, and drives a brand new European car and has a super model wife.

    • +20

Wha… I guess mine are on backorder.

      • +4

        You and me both mate

      • +4

        Wife or car?

        • +33

          Yes

      • +1

At least you still got a chance. My order got cancelled without reason.

        • Is didn't even get a voucher for my trouble

      • I signed up years ago and mine was never issued, is this a new thing?

    • +5

But they only recommend buying Corollas or Camrys.

      • +1

They can't let you one up them.

    • How did you know this, have you seen them?

    • +5

Well, we are not too far behind. The OzBargain community all earn at least 150K . Just need to work on that brand new Euro car and super model wife and we will get there too.

      • Sorry Imissed the memo. How do I get to earn 150K? I can manage with out the Euro car as I love my Honda CR-V, and don't need a super model wife as I bat for the other team.

    • Whingepool

    • What does it matter
Its all about helpful content, Not context

    • That's an investment car.

We can make a ozbargain group, in which we smile each other to get into the secret Aura forums? lol
Just Kidding ozbargainers have a life.

Personally wouldnt think so much into it, that forum has always had power users and mods being mates, from IRC and now discord.

    • +4

      Sounds good.

I'm a 50yo male with so much knowledge to share but at whirlpool its like George Orwell's 1984.

Been on ozbargins since it started but never made an açou t until recently.
Glad to be apart of the community. Although I miss the days of 100% free give a ways.

      • +33

        but never made an.. açou

        Bless you!

Some of the posts here suggest otherwise…

  • +22

well JV is banned on whirlpool

    • +74

Heading over there now, thanks :)

Worse than North Korea? Yeah those poor Koreans wouldn't know suffering until they kicked out of a forum!

        • +2

Has the West imposed sanctions on Whirlpool, as such being the ultimate cause of its members’ suffering?

        • 2022's best comment yet

      • +7

Given responses like this I suspect WP may not be the issue!

      • It's not hard to make a new account!

        • They ban 2nd accounts over their pretty quick

They have various ways, IP, mac address etc, the mods are power trippers for sure and stifle real conversation

      • "I questioned the mods actions."

As you are entitled to do - it's called "Talk with a Mod".

Oh - you mean you argued the toss in the free forum with established mores for that particular thread?

        How did I guess…

      • Might as well say it's worse than the Holocaust.

      • Looks like OP is trying to get the double. Banned from WP & OzB

    • +10

how is JV banned on whirlpool? he is like the nicest user.

      • +33

I unironically like JV. Some of his posts did get a chuckle out of me.

        • +9

I thought JV was a women.

          • +11

@GoldenDragon888: I was almost certain he was a root vegetable.

          • +1

@GoldenDragon888: Is we having trouble with plurals, or are they a committee?

            • +3

@terrys: Plurals are hard for Asian.

              • +1

@GoldenDragon888: Fair point - I'd have huge trouble reading Russian and it's pretty much the Latin alphabet going left to right, and with German tenses even though I speak fluent North-western Deutsche pidgin. [AKA "English"]

Add in the current debate over pronouns and ambiguous doesn't begin to describe it…

        • +16

Me too, JV is always funny, and doesn't give a shit if neg voted, carries on with the exact same sense of humour regardless.

          • +4

@Quantumcat: I used to get really upset in the early years of membership when I got negged but then I realised - it all means nothing. It’s not like reddit where subs like r/cryptocurrency have moons which ended up being worth a bit if you got in early and consistently contributed to the sub.

        • +3

Jv is consistence performer, very noice

      • +2

        yeah not sure.
Even I didn't get banned on whirlpool :O

      • how is JV banned on whirlpool?

        LOL…

        I'm a mod there…

        • I find that very hard to believe. But at the same time, I hope I am wrong.

    • +6

I doubt it, no bold text option on whirlpool

    • +1

      The dream…..

    • He is?

    • This should be their slogan
      Whirlpool:- 'Because JV is banned'

  • +10

Well to be honest the question shouldn't be about whirlpool but yourself.

Why does it matter what other people think or say about you?

You do not need to justify your best life and the opinions of others should not matter to you.

Often people go to these communities not only for help, but to seek community itself or entertainment.

Going on anonymous online forums and expecting people to be super nice is definitely an expectation that would not meet reality.

Just as you wouldn't listen to the random stranger on the bus, why would you listen to someone on a random online forum?

Reality wise, what you should be asking yourself is what am I expecting and is this desire/expectation causing my own suffering, rather than the banter itself.

      Good advice!

Your right. For starters I could be communicating with a child.

      • +4

Sometimes, but I believe they're on fortnite.

The issue would be you're dealing with peoples opinions, and their beliefs, and you rarely can change peoples opinions or beliefs.

Opinions are a rather cheap commodity. It's not about who the other person is, but understanding that what people say to you, does not matter at the end.

      • +2

I could be communicating with a child

        Admire your aspirational thinking.
Persevere, success is only just around the corner.

        • They're already past "wee-wee" and "poo-poo" and have advanced to names for the tinkly bits™.

    • Gallifr3y, I collect quotes. This is one from Dr Robert Simpson from University College London in an ABC Online News story:
"In order to be fully justified in holding our views, we need to know what we'd say to the most intelligent and capable defenders of opposing views."

Having somewhere to argue the our views gives us not just the intellectual pleasure of doing so, and refining our views, but also somewhere to help us feel we are justified in holding them. And to do that we NEED to be able to debate them with people who may not have the same views as us. Unfortunately the effect of too much moderation, as is the case in Whirlpool, is that they don't just stop the inevitable abuse that comes with disagreement, they shut down any disagreement, and you just get an echo chamber of similar views. The views of the moderator.

      • I have just found this forum - and happy to do so..
I was placed in the "Penalty Box" at Whingepool 6 months ago after disagreeing with their imposed line of groupthink once too often.
Today I thought I would try to find out why I had not been allowed to post again.
The precipitating event for me being placed in the Penalty Box/effectively being banned was that I had dared to argue with a moderator IN PRIVATE DISCUSSION - not even on the public forum.

It would seem that I have been banned permanently.

Anyway, I hope this is a better place.

The reason why I was arguing was because they did not want me linking to an Automotive forum that I had just been made a global moderator for, and was letting other Whingepool members know where to turn to for help if they ever had trouble with their Mitsubishi cars, primarily Australian made Mitsubishi Magna/Verada.
I was regarded as if I had an incurable social disease.
I just thought I was helping people, which I do well.

Anyway, I hope the time here is more enjoyable.

I hope to help people on the Automotive forum.

    Nope

I'm on WP and have been for years. Long timers have general seen it all and you can appreciate why there is a shortness to the posts.

I see the same on here. I mean really, how many times can people post asking strangers on the internet for life advice that should be common sense or passed down from their parents.

    See? Shortness…..

      • +2

Where did you get the idea that he sold it. Wikipedia says he still owns it. Google can't find any reference to him selling it.

        • -4

News to me…. I will have a look.

          • +6

@Offgrid: It's " news" that the bit of bullshit you just made up isn't true?

      • Looks like you are right. From memory I'm was sure he sold it or at least part of it. I will do some more research.

        • +2

I hope you are not confusing Hackett's sale of internode!!

        • +15

Nah, just spout crap like it's true, I am sure it's got nothing to do with your ban there either :P

      • yeah right

      • Sure mate.i bet you started .lusers as well.

        • Needed somewhere to store his single digit slashdot id

      • +3

Since Simon sold it off it has greatly gone down hill.

So now it's been shown that 'fact' is incorrect what else have you decided to attribute to it going downhill?

      • +2

        "Since Simon sold it off"

Did you hear this in your founding members committee, or didn't you have enough spare socks to form a quorum?

You sound like someone who worked for the CIA and knows a lot of Canadian Mounties. Mary Jo Willy says hello.

      • Yeah WP has gone downhill. A lot of bullies like you said. For that reason. I'm staying here at OZbargain. I'm trying my best to keep away from WP now days. As most people call it WhingePool.

    • +37

Forums tend to suffer from cliquiness and rot. The same thing happened to forums like Cool Running (thankfully dead), various subreddits, and by far the worst I've come across recently, the Choice (magazine) community forums.

The old guard get tired of answering same or similar questions by enthusiastic new joiners and get increasingly short and irritable with their responses. They are bored and engage newcomers in verbal sparring. Newcomers are told to search years of threads before trying to join conversations.

Newcomers become few and far between because screw that, back to Reddit. The old guard starts to shrink as the bored peel off to find new blood elsewhere, and the shrinking remnants are left to snipe at each other. Forum dies, the end.

Where are WP and OzB in this lifecycle? Where are you in this lifecycle?

      • +4

What you say is true. But it fails to take into account that moderators could break the downhill spiral by punishing the right people. The people who damage the debate by giving unconstructive responses. People who complain about people expressing views they don't agree with. Rather than picking on people who bring fresh blood and ideas.

        • +5

I've just never seen moderators do that, even in the best forums. There are subtleties in 'established member' (aka old guard) responses that on their own can't justify censorship or gentle moderative suggestions, but as a whole can make occasional visitors and newcomers feel a bit intimidated.

          • +1

@Enuffstuff: i've seen that happen here a lot

      • +2

The old guard starts to shrink as the bored peel off to find new blood elsewhere, and the shrinking remnants are left to snipe at each other.

No way man! We’re gonna keep rockin’ forever..forever..forever..

      • +2

"Newcomers are told to search years of threads"

Something rarely seen in Whirlpool fora, and often moderated as pointless should someone herring it should it not contain advice on how to perform the relevant search, and the topic being one within the same thread and currently being debated.

        • It might explain why WP has survived so far in an environment where its fixed forums are the primary attraction. I agree about not seeing the "omfg search lol" posts, but am also not prolific enough to enter the Lounge of Antagonistic Argy Bargy. Maybe that's the difference. And yes ignorance is bliss.

  • +3

Exactly what post/material did you post that got the mods attention enough to ban you?

    • +4

I was put in the penalty box because I was on WP and my female friend asked what I was up to. I said I'm on WP forum. She said what's that so I told her. She makes an account and contributes to the post with non offence at all.

Next min we are both put in the penalty box for aprently me making a ghost account.

If I was going to do that I would have used a VPN or used my mobile internet instead of the NBN but I had nothing to hide.

      • Ok so that;s the penalty box - how did you escalate it to a banning worthy status?

        • +5

I contacted a mod and told them they had made a mistake. The only answer I got back was its now 14 days. I contacted back asking for a senior mod to review the mod www1 decision. Got a message back for www1 saying I'm now banned permanently.

          • +6

@Offgrid: I got the same response from moderators. I went years and years not arguing with any Whirlpool moderators decisions, no matter how inexplicable and incomprehensible they were. Then I took them for their word that the moderators "don't bite", and questioned a decision. To which the moderator responded not by giving me a polite explanation to go with my polite request for one - I don't think he could explain it with anything but bias - he went back and deleted all my recent posting on some vague pretext or other, then sin binned me for a long time for "persistently disobeying the rules".

That is the behaviour of a bully. And saying that that's what it was got me - at least that login - banned.

          • @Offgrid: Does your friend also have abysmal spelling and logic? Is she called "Mary Willy" by any chance?

  • +17

I have wondered why someone would want to be a Whirlpool moderator. There's no payment for doing it. You're anonymous. Everyone hates you. It seems to me that the only sort of people who'd want the job would be the sort of people who get off pushing other people around with impunity. Bullies. And the way Whirlpool is moderated, it looks like that's the case.
