Better than the Catch connect deal which was posted yesterday

    • +5

      Why? That one is cheaper

      • +1

Cheaper isn’t always better :) No international calling on Catch. For an extra 10 bucks, you get unlimited text and calling to 15 countries !

        • +5

So what you really meant was, this deal is "better than the Catch deal for Some, not for others."

  • For new customers only. I'm with catch connect now and my prepaid plan about to finish up. I was however a Coles prepaid customer before switching to catch, do I still qualify as a new customer? Thanks

  • +6

It feels like $109 to $119 is standard now for around 120 to 150GB/12 month SIM's.
These deals are on that often with multiple brands it's not hard to get these deals anymore.
I haven't paid more than around $9 to $11/month in a very long time.
It certainly make post paid look expensive now.

    • +3

Same, it makes my skin crawl when I see plans that are $25+ for 20GB when I've normally been able to get that with pre paid SIMs for around $9-$11 avg. price per month as well.

      • -1

What plans are charging $9-11 for 20GB per month? Most seem to be around 8-10GB a month in that price range

        • -1

Post-paid. So monthly based on the yearly upfront cost.

          • @albot: Yes that's what I meant - most of the post paid plans I see are $110-120 for 120-150GB over 365 days. I recently heard about Catch doing a 240GB plan for $109 - that is a genuinely great deal but most are 120-150GB at that price

            • @[Deactivated]: True. Most 200GB plus yearly plans are more than $150.

          • +1

            @albot: eh? That is pre-paid.

            • @bargaino: I think you're right, I always get pre and post paid mixed up

            • @bargaino: Whoops, Pre. Soz!

        • +2

I paid $109 in Nov on Catch Connect for 240GB over 12 months (Equivalent to 20GB per month/$9.08 PM).
I'll see what deals are like around in Aug, Sep, Oct this year when it's getting close to its expiry.
These are the 12-month pre-paid deals we are talking about.

          • @SimAus007: That's a great deal

  • Any VOLTE with this plan by any chance?

    • nope…

  • -5

Coles mobile data was bad for me. Often, slow speeds and simply no internet at all. Been on Boost for a few months and problem solved.

    • Username checks out, sinnerating about Optus coverage

    • +3

I think you might be in a Optus dead spot. I've had for over a year and it's been fine. Of course telstra has better coverage and you pay for that. YMMV

    • Could be that you're far off from an Optus tower/coverage area

    • +1

I have to second this. I was surprised when data stopped flowing when I was on Collins street, that too when the streets were empty in lockdown.

It was Optus but not exactly colesmobile.

    • Could be your phone, especially if it's a grey import.

  • -1

Switched one phone to this optus virtual provider and have tried everything to get MMS working. Simply won't work. Searching around the internet it seems to be recurrent problem, support are useless. Running credit out then changing to another provider.

  • -8

Negative due to poor 4G network (phantom 4G - on with no data flow) and deliberate exclusion of Taiwan from the unlimited talk and text

I have the one year plan and this has been terrible for about 9 months now

    • +4

I'm curious to know how it was deliberate?

      • If it’s not included you would think it’s deliberate wouldn’t you?

      • -1

Hi, not that the response can be seen anymore, it is a 'deliberate' exclusion in that the roaming and free call region they have taken up from their carrier, Optus, includes Taiwan, so to offer that region except Taiwan is a deliberate exclusion.

    • +2

They even left Kenya out. Even their racism doesn't make sense any more!

      • +1

        No, not Kenya!

        • +1

          Kenya believe it!?

    • Do you mean Chinese Taipei?

      • +1

        Lol nice one ☝️

      • No, Democratic Taiwan, as in not a murderous communist regime.

    • +6

      Jerks deliberately excluded ~180 countries.

    • +1

I have the one year plan and this has been terrible for about 9 months now

      3 months to go!

      • about 9 months now

        :O
        call the midwife!

    • @sngr No, excluding Taiwan is not "deliberate". Not even Optus prepaid SIM offers Taiwan. Coles Mobile offers 15 free countries, the exact same as Optus!!
As for the "Negative due to poor 4G network phantom 4G". That's pretty short sighted. Read any report on Optus or Australia's mobile network
Unlike the NBN our mobile network including Optus/Coles is excellent. It sounds like you were living in a blackspot or needed to adjust your network settings.

      • It would be short sighted to believe my experience with this service is somehow improved and thus my negative as an individual of this community is no longer valid simply by downvoting me. Have used Optus and Telstra and other vcarriers without issue.

And as to semantics: since it is not an accident I am quite sure it is deliberate?

  • Had bad network issues near my home & near my wife's workplace. we couldn't talk when she was at work & and when she drives on M1 (some part of road).
Unable to resolve/or verify issues by us so we couldn't get refund. Changed to boost.

    • +3

@SWill Hold on, these are the same excuses I give my wife when she calls me!!

  • +1

I wonder why all these pre-paid plans don't come with International Roaming anymore. I ended up getting a comparatively worse Amaysim plan mainly because I wanted International Roaming activated for OTPs etc. when I commence travel later this year.

    • Vodafone and Lebara offer roaming on prepaid, if you pay what looks to be reasonable rate for it.
I wouldn't expect roaming to be included at no cost, given current pre paid offers.
If they included it at no cost, we'd all have to absorb that cost in higher rates.
Roaming on prepaid is a relatively new thing, more providers are offering it but I'm assuming many of them don't want to for financial reasons (better keeping higher value post paid customers on post paid)

      • -1

We need to be clear what we mean by "roaming". The ability to receive texts whilst overseas is probably what most people would like/expect. I don't see why there should be a charge for this.

Data roaming is a different thing and is now almost extinct. My legacy sim-only Optus account still has 10Gb of roaming data per month but I expect it to be removed on renewal in a few months.

Then finally there is roaming covering incoming and outgoing calls and texts, both in Aus and whilst overseas. Again my current Optus plan has this "free" to 35 countries (whilst in Aus and overseas) but this is also becoming rare/diluted as per the offer we are discussing here.

        • +1

I wouldn't expect any type of roaming to be included on a pre paid plan sold in Australia.

Telcos for years have used this as a big money maker, throwing it in without any cost to the consumer (no cost is always debatable) could be something they can do to differentiate themselves, but I can't see the day when all providers will throw it in genuinely for nil.

Post paid plans always attract a higher monthly fee, even BYO post paid, so perhaps that may one day as you're already paying a premium.

          Time will tell.

I'm happy to pay a few bucks a day for data and roaming calls whilst OS, but that's because I pay about 2 cups of coffee a month for my access fee whilst in Oz, so I don't expect it.
I've never paid such little for my mobile network access :)

          • @SimAus007: As mentioned by gadgetguy, I am mainly expecting incoming SMS services only. From what I recollect, receiving SMS (pre Dec-2020) when abroad was always free across the prepaid providers. I actually don't mind paying some money for it (receiving SMS only; no outgoing SMS or calls) if that's what works out financially for the Telcos. But the companies now don't seem to provide that option at all in prepaid; even as an add-on.

        • +1

you roaming, you are using other country network and your service provide pays. So, I don't see why there should NOT be a charge for this.

          • @watyoulookat: Yep, the telcos here have to pay termination rates to the overseas networks, which are very low now generally speaking, but the telcos in most other countries do charge termination rates for incoming calls and SMS.
It's not free for them so why should they cover it?
I suspect they aren't covering it now because prepaid offers are substantially lower than what they were 2 to 3 years ago on average, the deal in this post is a good example of that.
Sure, they could stop offering these insanely cheap SIM options, how about we make prepaid a minimum of $25/month like it used to be, and then offer included incoming overseas SMS/calls again, but I know what I'd rather have :)

  • How long do you have to be away from the network to be considered new customer? A week? A month?

    • +3

Never mind, had a chat and was told that the moment you port out, you become a new customer.

  • Good price, terrible terrible support!

I purchased 4 SIMs from the last specials, 3 SIMs were ported to Coles mobile from CatchConnect with no issues
My wifes port on the Saturday 6th came back with a system or technical error. We contacted support multiple times throughout the week (response times via chat telephone was slow) and their response was to wait for the technical error to be fixed. The CatchConnect plan had expired at 11pm on Tuesday 8th wife was without a phone.
We asked for the port to be cancelled, which they replied with saying it wasn't possible. Their workaround was for my wife to buy a new Coles $20 SIM (which Coles will reimburse) to use and wait for the technical issue to be fixed.
Last night, 7 days after the initial port request, I ended up having to recharge the CatchConnect SIM with a 30 day plan hoping Coles Mobile will get their act together and fix this technical issues.

We've lodged a complaint with Coles via the complaints section but that may take a couple of days to resolve.

    • +4

ALL operators have appalling support. Some worse than others, but all awful.

    • Had the exact same issue with 3 plans of the 4 I bought going thru, and one not - mine.. Got a $20 sim and new number to keep connected, they sent me a cheque to cover cost (cheque is from Optus). Took 5 days but it finally went through. Catch cancelled my old plan so had to wait it out.

  • The list of countries is limited - no good to me.

Optus allows 35+ on the their plans, wonder why they don't follow it through on this plan.

    • +1

Depends. Boost offers more countries but price is also higher.

  • -2

If you're not desperate to get onto a plan, this plan often drops to $99

    • +12

You're thinking of the 60GB plan, this is 120GB.

  • How is this vs Boost $200 for $150 after discount? My unit seems to be a deadzone for Voda (~2 bars), have not tried coles/optus and boost(seems to have full telstra coverage)

    • O what's this $50 discount on the $200 boost plan? I'm up for renewal in July.

      • +1

Code for existing customers because hard to swallow a 33% increase in price from $150 to $200

        • Ah cool do they send it closer to renewal? I've been on their $150 plan for two years now.

          • +1

@JungliChilli: When they ported you to the new plan you got an email. At the bottom it talks about the discount. You need to opt into marketing emails.

            • @netjock: Okay cool, thanks mate.

              • +1

@JungliChilli: Check your emails. I just spoke to Boost on the chat. Keep that email because if they don't send you a code you can contact help agent and they will manually process the $50.

I was asking because I could not find the opt in marketing tick box.

                • @netjock: Yeh thanks for the heads up. Found the email as well but nothing about opt in for marketing. Will reach out to boost. Thanks again!

    • Similar question from me:
Currently with Boost, but was wondering whether I'd notice much difference switching given we live in the inner city?
      Thanks for any feedback.

      • +3

I would get cheap sims (you know the ones that are literally free after cash back) and check each of the networks. There is reception black holes around for all networks.

  • +2

Somewhat unrelated, but how do people get the discount for Coles mobile recharge?

    • Yes I’m interested in that too - I have read that if you leave it to close to expiry they send a discount offer - but I haven’t seen that mentioned lately
My services on Coles are coming up for renewal soon

    • +2

You literally do nothing. Make sure auto recharge is off, and within 30 days before expiry, they will email you the 25% discount to recharge.

  • +1

    Good price

I've also had really good customer service with Coles mobile

They have Australian call centre and was never on hold for that long to talk to someone

  • Can anyone comment on Coles v amaysim for reception? I'd say being Optus they'd be pretty much the same?

  • +1

Don't forget to turn off auto recharge.

always good advice, although renewals on this plan, this month, are being offered at $112 with auto-recharge

  • +1

If only they started to offer a monthly discount on groceries, like Woolies…

  • -8

Just had a chat with customer support. They advised this promotion has ended weeks back .

  • +3

You don't need to turn off the auto recharge. I am using the $150 365d pack, 30 days before the expiry, coles offers me 25% off the recharge, so I only paid $112.50 for another 365 days, plus the data rollover.

    • +1

How did that offer come? As a Text message?

      • +1

Yep. Sms. Though I had auto recharge off. Then you just turn it back on and it will recharge and charge you the lower amount. Super easy.

  • No deal. Can't call Russia and tell them to stop being a bully.

  • ls it new customer to Coles mobile or new "customer" to the network. My wife is an Optus prepaid customer, does she need to wax on wax off or vice versa?

    • Great question! Let me answer it by letting you know that I bought the SIM pack and activated it and there were no dramas (other than the fact that I'd forgotten the Optus phone number my wife used was in my name, and we do not share a birthday, let alone a birth date - needed a phone call to Coles Mobile to sort that one out).

  • Just read through the T&C on this deal and it says ends before 1 March, however my current Catch SIM plan ends on 5 March. In order to squeeze every last drop from my existing plan, I would like to start using the new Coles SIM no earlier than 5 March.

So do I need to activate the Coles SIM before 1 March to be eligible for the discount or does the 30-day post purchase activation term still applies in this case (assuming I will make the purchase online tomorrow 17 Feb)?

    Much thanks in advance!

    • +1
      • Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised in a promotion (whichever is earlier)
      • Thanks for the clarification!

    • after the 30 days, you might be activated onto whatever the $150 plan exists at that time. and the sim may expire in ~12 months

  • +2

    .
THANKS WatchNerd the Coles sign on is a bit of a pain, but I wanted it to ring the UK……would have missed out if you hadn't put it on OzBargain ….so thanks 🙂

  • Does anyone know if you can buy this in store?

    • +1

      Yes sure can.

      • +1

Thanks. Went to my local but they sold out. Can confirm it was discounted in store

  • Belong have cancelled their $10 plan for existing customers and migrating them to $15/month, so this Coles offer is decent value if Optus network works for you.

  • Can I buy this online using a gift card?

  • This deal may have expired. The price is now $150.
