Amazon Cancelled My Valentine Day's Gift - on Valentine's Day

About two weeks' ago - 2 Feb to be precise - I placed an order on Amazon for some jewellery.
It was intended to be my Valentine's Day gift for my wife.
For the nearly two weeks since it showed in my orders as 'delivery estimate - 11 to 14 Feb.'
That was fine for me - so long as it arrived by today all would be sweet.
This morning, at 6:30am, I received an email from Amazon. In it they tell me the supplier has now notified them that they cannot supply the item.
Today, Valentine's Day, the last day of the delivery estimate, they all of a sudden decide they cannot now supply the item.
Why didn't they think to pass this information on earlier - say on the day I ordered it - if they didn't have the stock?
Why did they wait until the morning of delivery to drop this on me?
I have to say I was pretty annoyed - now I have nothing to give the missus on Valentine's.
Anyway, had an online chat with Amazon. They were apologetic and gave me a $20 credit, which was really all I could ask for I suppose, but it's still a bit annoying that they couldn't have given me a bit of a head's up.

This is part of Valentine's Day Sales for 2022.

Sounds like your wife just scored herself a $20 amazon gift card for Valentine’s Day, you might be in for a good time tonight my friend!

    • +6

And for free! This is the true OzBargain way to Valentine!

    • Whats the point of this post?
Amazon has done the right thing.
You couldn't ask for better service really

      Another whinging time waster!

  • +1

Their system is automated, so unlikely to be flagged as unavailable for delivery until the estimated date has been passed.

  • +2

Sounds about as good as the local florist: took my money, confirmed same day delivery, texted that they were getting the order ready, switched to radio silence, no flowers delivered, not answering the phone

    • +2

Plot twist, your local florist was recently bought out by Amazon

    • +1

But did you get a $20 credit?
      ;-)

    • Did you order directly from the florist or through a company like Interflora?

  • Eek, sounds like it's going to be a tricky evening when she gives you your Valentine's Day gift, but you can only reciprocate with a $20 Amazon GC. ;)

    • Its not even a GC - its just a credit that will be applied at checkout when I next buy something supplied by Amazon… so I don't even have anything i can actually hand to her.

      • +6

Shouldn't you be out looking for something, rather than on OzB complaining? You knew at 6:30am.

      • +2

Time to get your pen and paper out and make a Valentine's Day card with a hand drawn $20 voucher* written inside!

*subject to "supplied by Amazon" products via Almost Banned's account

Do you have any neighbours with rose bushes?

  • +4

    That sucks.
But, was the product sold by Amazon AU, or a third party seller?

If it was a seller then the blame lies on them. Amazon couldn't tell you what they didn't know. But if it was in stock with, and sold by Amazon AU, then yeah, that's crap.

The healing process should start with…..Don't expect something every Valentines Day.

  • They were apologetic and gave me a $20 credit

Did you ask the operator if their wife/husband would be satisfied with $20 credit if they were in your shoes? đŸ˜†

  • +3

Maybe you could’ve looked up the meaning of estimate.

    • +1

Amazon Prime don't really say estimated time though, they tell you "Delivered By", and for the most past, they nail it, they are amazing when it comes to that, im sure in the fine print of their rules it says may not arrive by the time specified, but the implication they give you, and what they generally stick to, is that the item you purchase will by delivered by when they say it will be, rain, hail or shine, that is sort of the brilliance of amazon, getting things 1 day delivery arriving on a Saturday or Sunday, that is unheard of compared to any other business of their type, their network must be amazing

      • +2

and for the most past, they nail it

because of this, I've pretty must stopped buying stuff on ebay.

For anybody that forgot to get something for Valentine's Day, feel free to use this as an excuse.

    • +2

This is where I'd place my excuse to my girlfriend… if I had one :(

    • Told the wife she didn't get anything today because Almost Banned ordered her a gift on Amazon and it got cancelled…

      She wasn't buying my excuse.

  • +3

Honest question: what happens if you dont buy her anything on this day?

    • He gets none until next Valentines :P

    • Doghouse.

      • +5

Why though, why is this particular day so important. If there are negative consequences to not bowing down to this consumerism then maybe choose better partners. Honestly if they genuinely love you then the relationship and each other are more important then this day

        • +1

Seems a bit rich to complain about consumerism on a site like OZB.

          • @AustriaBargain: Surely this is the absolute best place to complain and try to make a difference. Little value in preaching to the converted.

          • +1

@AustriaBargain: In a sense I can see the conflict with the ethos of OZB but I actually think such discussions are most important on a site like OZB, lest we descend into madness.

  • Perhaps you can find a doghouse to buy on Amazon?

  • +1

If a gift isn't hand made or requires a lot of effort to get (maybe something your partner wants but hasn't been able to find even after months of looking), then what is the point of gifts between spouses? You're just spending each other's money on something that if they wanted it they could buy it themselves with the same money?

This probably wouldn't go down well if you said it though

    • +1

I know a (married) couple who gave each other cash for Christmas. I couldn't believe it.

      • My dad and step mother never combined their finances. They give each other $500 for birthdays and Christmas. They both use it to save for or help pay for things like new kayaks or a camera.

  • make sure you also leave feedback

  • Amazon Cancelled My Valentine Day's Gift

According to your post, the supplier cancelled it, not Amazon.

    • I do not have contact, nor a contractual relationship, with the supplier.
Amazon took my order, and notified me of the cancellation.
It is not really the cancellation that irks me. It is waiting until the day it was meant to be delivered - and the day I needed it - to tell me they don't have any.
      They must have known earlier.

      • At best, this is just poor service.

      • I do not have contact, nor a contractual relationship, with the supplier.

But the supplier cancelled, not Amazon.

        They must have known earlier.

        How do you know that?

        • Because teleportation of jewellery has not been perfected yet.

          • @Almost Banned: It's obviously not stored at the Amazon warehouse…

            • @jv: But it also was obviously not out for delivery the day before, or the day before that…

              • @Almost Banned: The mystery deepens…

              • +1

@Almost Banned: Amazon won't cancel an order at all. Even if it is running late, they won't cancel it. They have a due date, and then once that date comes and goes they say "sorry it is running late, come back after (3 days later) for a full refund".

It's on the supplier, Amazon in this case was just the marketplace.

How romantic… did you take her to macas for dinner?

Stop blaming other for your stupidity… how could you not anticipate things going wrong when the variables are so many.

Why dis you expect the delivery guy to deliver the goods… was he to get on bended knee?

    • -1

      huh?

Why did he expect the delivery guy to deliver the goods?

      Because…. because that's what a delivery guy does…. huh?
