Most will qualify for 5% with $10 cap!!
Title is a bit misleading, giving max cashback.

    From t&c:
    What is an Eligible Merchant?
For the purpose of the Promotion, an Eligible Merchant is a a merchant whose merchant category code (“MCC”) is designated as:

    MCC 5131 (being piece goods, notions, and other dry goods);
    MCC 5411 (being grocery stores and supermarkets);
    MCC 5422 (being freezer and locker meat provisioners);
MCC 5441 (being candy, nut, and confectionery stores)
    MCC 5451 (being dairy product stores);
    MCC 5462 (being bakeries); and
MCC 5499 (being miscellaneous food stores, including convenience stores and specialty markets).

When will I receive my cashback?
RPA will credit the cashback amounts into your Revolut account within ten (10) business days of the end of the Promotion Period.
    (2 weeks after 31/3)

In 10% Cashback (Up to $10 Max Total) at Cafes, Restaurant, Pub, Delivery Service or Fast Food promotion I missed out on cashback on purchases at some merchants. A cafe had MCC of a bakery.

Was paid out "within ten (10) business days of the end of the Promotion Period."
    Was pretty easy money!

But some complained they didn't get cashback days after they made qualified spend! Called it a scam etc, which it wasn't.
So best to read the t&c!

    • How do you see the exact MCC or do you just rely on the small icon?

      • Yes, Icons on Revolut transactions are based on MCC. There's a grocery icon. But that shows after purchase.

Shopping at major supermarkets should be fine.
Dining Promotion was a bit more uncertain. The cafe had a small commercial bakery at the back, so all transactions aren't through the bakery MCC. Luckily the pastries were sublime!

        • Looks like it says Category in the transaction details as well. A cake shop near me seems to count, so that's nice.

          • @askbargain: $200 of cakes please! Enjoy!
I must revisit that regional bakery 🍰

    • Title now updated by Mod👍

  • I reckon its not worth the effort. they need to remove the cap to begin with.

    • Wouldn't a higher/no cap mean more effort?

      • more effort but there will be more savings.

  • Standard customers are entitled to receive 5% cashback, capped at $10;
Premium customers are entitled to receive 7.5% cashback, capped at $15; and
Metal customers are entitled to receive 10% cashback, capped at $20.

Most of us probably go into the standard (free account) so only get 5% cashback. I reckon paying with Giftcard is much easier and there is no cap.

    • Hi flickr!
Many of us receive less than 5% discount on supermarket gift cards
      So 5% cashback is OK.

Can still collect supermarket points on purchase.
My Targeted points offers this week are:
      Woolies 3000pts for $50 + 3100pts for $50 + $5 cashback!
Or Coles 10000pts for $50 spend each of 4 weeks + $10 cashback!

So will spend $100 @Woolies this week, score $30.50cr in points & receive 5% cashback ($5 of $10 cap) in April.

After $200 spent in couple of shops, will pay by discount gift cards again.

Now to find my card. I've only used Revolut for these promotions!

If you shop at ALDI (which I assume will be treated as a grocery store), you will have to pay the surcharge for using a credit card.
The Revolut card does not have a savings / EFTPOS function.

    • It’s only 0.5% I just pay it.

  • +1

Will giftcard purchase count for this promotion ?

    • Good idea! Could stack with discount Deals on gift cards.

…Unless supermarket uses different MCC for gift card, alcohol, tobacco purchase.

Put through with groceries at self checkout might be best.

    • That is what I am thinking. $200 gift card with $10 cash back.

  • got 5% & $10

  • +4

This offer should stack with (discounted) gift card purchases from the Woolworths Group gift card portal, as the portal apparently has an MCC of 5411.

Another OzBargainer was told by their bank that their gift card purchases from the Woolworths Group gift card portal was actually classified as Grocery Stores, Supermarkets (which correlates with MCC 5411).

I personally don’t have a Revolut card, so I don’t know whether it works with the Woolworths Group gift card portal, but maybe someone else wants to try?

    • +1

Revolut is a prepaid card which may not be accepted by WWS gift card portal.

      • It's a debit card with Visa, should go through

        • -2

          It doesn't.

    • +3

It's definitely groceries, I just made the purchase: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/60614/94178/50688e16-8…
will report back when I got the cashback

    • Do gift card purchases in store at Woolworths also have an MCC of 5411?

      • I would say so, but I’m not 100% sure.

I know the MCC changes when you do cashout over the EFTPOS network.

        • I'm not sure what you mean by cashout over EFTPOS network, but if you buy lets say a $50 night out gift card and a few cents worth of actual groceries in the same transaction will it still not go through as MCC 5411?

          • @sub102:

same transaction will it still not go through as MCC 5411

Technically, it should. Test it out, and let us know. You shall receive lots of upvotes.

            • +1

@DoctorCalculon: Paid for a $50 gift card plus some milk at woolies with Revolut and it went through as Groceries so hopefully cashback

        • +1

I know the MCC changes when you do cashout over the EFTPOS network.

If you do $100 worth of groceries, and within that same transaction request a cashout of $50, the MCC would change to the generic Shopping category. This is from a really old transaction.

Otherwise, I could easily win the challenge by $50 groceries + $150 cash out.

          • @DoctorCalculon: Forgive me but mind educating me what this cash out over EFTPOS network is and it's relation to gift card purchases we're talking here?

            • +2

@sub102: "Cashout over the EFTPOS network" is where you withdraw cash from your bank account by using an EFTPOS card attached to that bank account.

I brought it up, because Coles and Woolworths allow cashout over the EFTPOS network at their checkouts, and when you request cashout, the MCC for the transaction changes. This is how EFTPOS gift cards can tell whether you're trying to purchase a loaf of bread at Woolworths vs attempting to cash out money from the EFTPOS gift card at Woolworths (and can therefore allow you to purchase groceries, but deny a cashout request).

Cashout is the only circumstance I know of where the MCC for a transaction at Coles or Woolworths checkouts changes from 5411 to something else.

Going back your question, if you purchase a gift card from Coles or Woolworths, it should still be assigned an MCC of 5411. I called my bank yesterday (because of this deal) and asked about Coles and Woolworths transactions where I purchased gift cards, and the bank told me the MCC was 5411.

              • @WookieMonster: Thanks for taking your time to explain all this really appreciate it! So basically there's no connection 2 different things you guys have been talking about. You just brought cashout up about because we were talking about MCCs if I'm not wrong.

Anyways back to this deal, unfortunately I didn't go ahead using Revolut for my gift card purchase as this offer is nowhere to be seen in my app anymore. You guys experiencing the same? Still haven't received the cashback from this offer either

                • @sub102:

Still haven't received the cashback from this offer either

I received mine as did others if you see towards the end of the thread. However, they took their sweet time.
Definitely get in touch with their support team if you are eligible.

                  • @DoctorCalculon: I have got in touch more than 10 days ago and still not got a resolution. Moreover they fail to even give me a timeframe

                • @sub102: I don’t have a Revolut account, so I definitely was not targeted with this offer!

  • Does Coles checkouts use one of those MCCs?

    • I would be quite surprised if they used something other than MCC 5411.

When I used an 86 400 card at Coles recently, 86 400 classified it as Groceries, which strongly hints at the MCC being 5411.

      • Thinking of stacking this with the Vanilla gift cards promo before it ends tonight…

        • My guess is that would work. Hopefully stores near you still have stock!

          • @WookieMonster:

Hopefully stores near you still have stock!

All my locals ran dry by Thursday morning. Unless mates have hidden them in the freezer.

            • @DoctorCalculon: I visited one store earlier today, and it had about 50x $250 gift cards on the shelves.

I visited a different store yesterday, and it had about 100x $250 gift cards on the shelves. I have actually visited this store multiple times within the last week, and strangely enough the time when it had the least number of cards on the shelves was on Wednesday morning just after opening…

          • @WookieMonster: By the same token, I should be able to get 5% back from Revolut on a $200 (variable) Apple gift card @ Coles, right?

            Upcoming Deal Link: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/684116

  • Are multiple transactions allowed? and can I use apple pay to pay?

  • Does anyone know if Costco has 5411 as their MCC?

Furthermore, is there a MCC look up table for Australian merchants? /cc @WookieMonster
My google-fu has failed me. When I search for something similar I keep coming across US-specific sites.

    • +1

I am not aware of any sort of publicly-accessible database for MCCs, as this these are usually individually determined by the financial institution managing a merchant’s EFTPOS payment systems.

My guess is that there would be little appetite on the part of the financial institutions to maintain such a database, as it would only really be of use for these kind of deals or MCC-restricted gift card deals.

Maybe the easiest way to find out is to ask whether you can do split payments at Costco, do a 20c transaction on the Revolut card, then wait and see how Revolut categorises Costco. Alternatively, you could reach out to your financial institution and ask them to look up previous transactions at Costco where you paid at the checkouts (rather than the food courts, service centre or the fuel pumps). Your financial institution should be able to see the MCC for previous transactions. Whether they are interested in helping is a different question…

ask them to look up previous transactions at Costco where you paid at the checkouts

Found a 86400 transaction from my last Costco visit (at the main checkout), which was categorised as SHOPPING. This is definitely not MCC code 5411.

        • +1

          Shopping seems rather vague.

Maybe it is MCC 7278 (Buying/Shopping Clubs, Services) or MCC 5300 (Wholesale Clubs)?

Either way, my guess is that Costco is not an eligible merchant for this promotion.

  • Is anyone having trouble using the Revolut card on the Woolworths Gift Card portal? Balance is ok but I keep getting…

Something went wrong. We are unable to process your payment at this time.
    Please try again later.

  • So many things went wrong using REVOLUT!!! Bye REVOLUT!!!

    Went grocery shopping @Woolies.
    Had $80 in Revolut.

Made $50 purchase (to qualify for 3000pt) - part paid with $30 points. So $20 spent.

Then 2 x ~40c purchases to qualify for 2000pt no min spend
    Worked fine.

Then $54 purchase - part paid with $20 of points (to qualify for 3100pt)… So $34 from account - REFUSED!

Total of $55 purchases attempted with $80 in account. Should have been fine.

card was "frozen for fraudulent activity"

SMS, notification & email all said to verify transactions in app (latest Android version installed)

But app wont let me in! (used it many times over months with no problems)
Accepts fingerprint / PIN, but just won't open.
    Have latest version.
    Restarted but no success.

    Logged in via website.
Asks to verify last purchase which I did, tells me card will be unfrozen..
But just shows "something went wrong!"…
    Tried many times!

Contacted support via web, provided screenshots…
Told "it's easy to unfreeze it" myself, despite that being my complaint & screenshots showing it failed!

After a lot of waiting was asked if I wanted Revolut to unfreeze card… YES!
Took a while on chat - now unfrozen!

Told to use forgot pin to use app - had tried but just showed spinning disc…

Asked to provide screenshot of App stuck after entering PIN/fingerprint
Android app shows that's not possible

Told to take photo with another phone to help solve their problem
Described screen, but still wanted photo of the spinning disc when app tries to open…

    Gave up!

Had been a supporter of REVOLUT.
    Buy far too unreliable system!
    Will close account!

    • Thanks for sharing exp. Dont make the 4th purchase on Revolut at the same place on one day.

You could have just bought a $60 Wish to ease it.

      • Learn that the hard way! 1HR on chat!

App was stuck trying to start up hours later. Never been a problem in months of use.
Restarted phone. But still unable to use latest app - being investigated.

Already have $1500 of gift cards @7% off! Didn't need another.

Could easily have used one for the 40¢ purchase. Paid for failed purchase by gift card.
Unfortunately didn't know Revolut's unwritten security rules then! Now know. But likely different for different users.

Just wanted to spend $200 on groceries for $10 cashback - should have been easy & quick to spend over a few shops.
Much easier to stick with payment with discount gift cards!

Still, used 10k Rewards points (earnt quickly in other promotions), towards $100+ purchase.
        Earnt 12,100 bonus Rewards points!

        Just REVOLUT spoilt it!
This Deal is not worth the bother REVOLUT caused!!
        Revoked my upvote.

  • Anyone know who you get billed by if you buy discounted Woolworths Gift Card with Entertainment Book offer? So if it used Woolworths as the biller technically you can get 4% discount with entertainment book and 5% with Revolut? Total 9%?

    • +1

If the URL of the gift card portal where you pay for the Woolworths Group gift card is https://giftcards.woolworths.com.au, you will be billed by Woolworths Group, and therefore it should be eligible for the 5% cashback offer.

Btw, the total is not 9%, because you’re getting 5% cashback on the amount you pay to Woolworths Group, not the value of the gift card. For example, if you purchase a $100 Woolworths gift card and pay $96 for it, you’ll get 5% cashback on the $96 (which equates to $4.80 cashback). Therefore, you’ll only pay $91.20 for a $100 gift card, which is equivalent to an 8.8% discount.
