When I am 60 and have nothing better to do I will buy one of these and look for crap on the beach :D

    • +1

      and scroll ozbargin?

  • +2

Reviews indicate it’s been sub $1000 prior to this…..?
I think I would like it for a day, then get bored with it?

    • Not if you found something of value.

      • +7

Gotta be of value for curiosity. It's hard to get rich with these things. It's a hobby.

You will search for hours and come up with $1.42 in coins and a bunch of bottle caps and foil. Maybe a ring now and then. Granted though, some of those coins might be from early last century. Detecting old goldfields may even find older coins (such as Chinese coins).

For high value finds - such as gold - a sub $1k detector ain't gonna cut it.

        • "For high value finds - such as gold - a sub $1k detector ain't gonna cut it"

lmao. you think the detector has any awareness of the value of the metal under the ground?

          • @gorge: in a way they do, numeric target IDs and iron rejection is becoming common in the $400+ range & I can reliably tell what I will be digging by the ID displayed and noise heard

but yeah…. super sensitive nugget finders are different beasts

          • @gorge: It's a bit like an arms race. Many spots have been raked over again and again and again, and otherwise can have a lot of stuff you don't necessarily want to be stopping to dig for. The better detectors will provide much more advanced discrimination, allowing the operator to determine the difference between a bottle cap, coin, ring, or something more valuable. They will also discriminate more reliably at greater depths. Generally, the latest and greatest will do this a little better than cheaper and/or older machines. It's like anything - with increase in price comes an increase in performance.

It's not so much that the detector can pick the value, but more that it might be able to tell the difference between metal types, and object shape. Indirectly though, it's pretty much as I said.

            …and then there's practice…as HeXa mentions.

    • +1

$1099 was fairly typical member price at BCF & Anaconda - occasionally ana got to $999 via the ebay coupons

$899 is very good, especially after the more recent price hike on the 600 - it went from $699 sale ($799 member) to $888/899 member pricing

EDIT: and I think cashrewards is 3.5% for BCF…. but the price beat at ana is better (mentioned below)

  • can this detect plastic landmines?

    • +12

Sure can, just push it into the ground nice and hard as you walk, will find 'em no probs.

      • "Team rocket blasting off again!"

    • No, you need a plastic detector for that

  • +19

We've been watching Detectorists (https://www.netflix.com/au/title/80065658?source=35) in our house. I thought this was a targeted ad.

    • +4

Was going to mention this show… I loved it and found it both amusing + emotive + calming. Something about all those location shots out in the fields, the birds etc.

    • +4

      Most relaxing show ever.

      • Never seen it. But totally expect them to start faking discoveries

        • +4

It's a drama, not a "unscripted" reality show.

It's actually very good, and if you are into any type of hobby you will relate to it.

    • +2

I imagine metal detecting as a hobby is a lot more successful in the UK due to their history

  • +7

extra 10% off price match at anaconda if anyone is interested in this

  • +2

Has anyone bought one of these and made their money back in what they've found?

    • +5

Not this specific model, but I've owned a few metal detectors for relic hunting/fun - after you've dug up your thousandth can pop lid, you realize there is way more trash than treasure.

      • +1

The nox 800 has several discrimination options. I guess once those are set up correctly, or you know your numbers, then you will leave 1/2 of the trash in the ground.

        • My Garrett AT-Pro had numbers too, I still dug way more trash than anything else, 95% trash, 3% coins and 1% matchbox cars or kids toys. The issue is that gold shows up as trash and vice versa most of the time. I'd only buy another one if I lived near a popular beach. Easier to dig and more likely to score something worth finding.

        • yep - VDI is great - not perfect - but then I'm not paying $2499 for a CTX3030 to dig bogan 'relics'!

A well-visited park which isn't frequented by other MDs will score me a reliable $20 an hour in goldies

My vanquish 540 paid for itself in 2 months (~$500) in decimal era coins alone, with the gold/silver jewellery and silver coins being a nice bonus

but no sovs/half sovs yet :(

my best finds (even more than gold rings) have been the oddities like old toy cap guns

    • +11

I have the 800 and it's a very good product.

Have I made my money back? No. Nooooo :-)

Beaches are full of ring pulls and bottle tops. Anything silver makes the detector squeal in a very high pitched tone, but things like gold rings (found one) have a similar signal to junk. Found lots of coins, but not enough to even cover fuel costs.

Gold fields around Adelaide are VERY well picked through.

It's a fun day out. Lots of exercise as you walk kilometres up and down beaches. But don't expect to make your money back with found items.

      • And don't believe ( or take it with a grain of salt ) all the pictures posted on facebook.

      • +2

Unless you're lucky. My old man found an 8 gram nugget first time out and a 22ct gold ring the first the he tried the local beach lol

        Tin ass

    • +4

My family member has found thousands worth of jewellery so guess it's all where you go… The biggest use for me would be finding that screw I dropped in the garden next to the fence or in the garage when working on the car πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

      • +2

How many screws can you buy with $899? (maybe, don't answer that! haha)

        • +1

I think he means so he doesn't drive over it and pop a tyre….

        • +1

Maybe that Stainless steel exotic screw, that can only found on Amazon.br and shipping is $150 ?

          • +3

@cameldownunder: Yeh, that erotic screw.. is usually about that price.

            Oh, you meant exotic! Sorry!

        • +2

          Depends where you go. πŸ˜‰βœˆοΈπŸ‡ΉπŸ‡

          • +1

@DKZ370: ^ This guy knows what I'm talking about! haha

            • +1

              @bobbified: Lol what have I created πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

      • Would it work for tracing a water line? Those things aren't always where you expect them to be

    • Yep, I have the nox 600 and have made about 2k in gold coins plus a lot of relics/jewelry going out once a week. With a detector of this quality plus a bit of experience you won't dig that much trash.

    • I've made back a few hundy in coins and jewelery.
Thing is, none of my other hobbies make me money, so why should detecting?
I do it for fun, not to make money.
I also remove a ton of rubbish from beaches and camp grounds so everyone's a winner.

  • I have seen a few people looking for coins near Captain Cook's landing place. Apparently it's not that difficult to find old coins but they don't worth much due to the condition they are in, unless it is made of precious metal.

  • +5

For anyone thinking they will go and make their fortune from this, or even do it in retirement, here are some hints as to how it will go

    • 99.99% of what you will find will be trash. Most probably bottle caps and ring tabs. If you are searching rural, it will probably be bullets.
    • Weight matters. Yes this unit is only about 2kg. But go and get a 2kg weight, hold your arm out straight, and swing it back and forth for an hour. If you want to do it for any period of time you may need a harness.
    • +1

You could get a TX-850 from Aliexpress, around $200, it is no nox800 but indicates trash as well as the 800
      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001389934896.html

got the tx-850, gofind 40, gold monster 1000 and Nox 800.

    • +1

fair comment - but honestly, you get used to the weight

their centre of gravity is a bit too far forward (particularly with a 15" coil) - can address by adding counter weight - but all day prospectors are better off with the harness

as for digging trash, you are doing it wrong if your hit rate is that bad - a good set of ears and well adjusted settings will soon give you much better odds

  • im about to be rich

  • +13

Might get one for my girlfriend

    …I ain't sayin' she a gold digger

  • +1

For anyone thinking of buying the 800 (and presumably 600 from Minelab), be aware that the plastic holding the cuff is very weak and will break within a month. It's not a warranty item. If you see people with Equinox 800s on the beach you'll see they all have aftermarket aluminium cuff holders. I do too.

The detector is really good and I'm happy with my purchase, but this is one area they should improve.

    • +1

I agree - plus ergonomics can be a bit better (I like the Vanquish for a quick scout of a random park)

the aftermarket support for the nox is great though - CF shafts, battery packs, skins, etc + the highly recommended 'threepence magnet' 6" coil

EDIT: and a pinpointer is a must - coin shooters will get away with the $20 charrot (chinese garrett carrot clone), though the real thing is better - but give the ML profind 35 a miss

      • +1

Yep, without a pinpointer you'll be digging forever. Also for beaches a stainless steel sand scoop is an absolute must.

        • 'nice' to see along with the ML price hikes at Anaconda was also an increase in range of related products… like sand scoops!

    • +1

Yes when i bought mine (second hand but like brand new) the cuff had been replaced with aluminium, and the shaft with carbon fiber, cables had sheaths added etc. It's a good detector for the money.

      • +1

mmmm. ah shit…. now I'm browsing the D-Ed website… wifes gonna be pissed >.<"

  • +1

The main difference with this model and the 600 is this model will also detect Gold where as the 600 wont, i bought my 600 a couple of years ago and this was around 750 and the 800's were around $900 - $950, although it seems COVID has driven the price up on these. They are fairly strait forward to use and my 7yo used it the other day on the beach to find 2.50 in change on the beach and a lot of rubbish, but its a good feeling knowing your also cleaning up the environment too! Hope this helps

    • they both detect gold - not to GPX extent, but still capable of it

difference is the 800 has a dedicated mode for it

for the average coin shooter, the 600 does fine, as a lot of the benefit of the 800 comes in the accessories included

  • I bought one of these for around the house: https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/deep-target-waterproof-metal-de…

The real value I got from it was realising that buying something more expensive would've been a waste of money. It's fun for a bit (and even this one can discern ferrous/non-ferrous) but not something I see myself doing outside of looking for my wife's dropped jewellery or giving the kids an excuse to go outside and dig some holes.

  • Get a graphics card and mine Crypto, more likely to get ROI at this stage as most of the surface/detectable gold is probably gone.

    • +2

      Get a graphics card

Might need a detector like this one to find a decent GPU these days (affordable).

    • The next "gold rush" is probably in the virtual space as well.

  • +2

Brilliant price for a brilliant machine. I paid more than this, but it's worth every cent.

  • Can this detect Crypto?

    • Take a photo of the 800 and make an NFT.

  • +3

I'll just add here that finders keepers rules don't apply to valuable items that someone has lost. If you find a ring and there's a chance it can be reunited with its original owner then you must take it to a police station. They then have two months to find the owner, and after that you get to legally keep the item.

When the form is filled out, make sure they put 'finder to keep' on it, otherwise you don't get the item back! Had that happen to me where a silver ring was sold off at a police auction. My contribution to the state government's coffers :-P

    • Find it funny that we expect the police to find the owner of such trivial items. They don't even have the resources to allocate to home burglary let alone a lost ring from the beach with unknown owner.

  • +1

Don't. Need. One. Must. Not. Buy.

  • Anaconda members price also now $899 so no 10% price beat :(

  • Nox 800 use to be the go to, and I really love mine. The XP Deus 2 has been recently released and I think is the new all-rounder. Much more expensive but ticks a lot more boxes too.
Perhaps this is why the Nox 800 is dropping in price.

  • $1099 now.

It's still $899 at Anaconda with free delivery/pickup. I ended up using the "WELCOME10" code to get another $10 off.
