I vouch for HD681’s, fair warning they sound a bit bright and clamp a lot, it may need stretching. Reason why I like them is they aren’t muddy/overly bassy headphones, as a ex-headphone Audiophile that use to own a lot of headphones in the past the HD681’s still bring a smile when I put them on. Even the above posters open-backed on-ear Koss Porta-Pros and KSC75.

    • Do you know anything about the Superlux HD 681B. Could it be better for movies with higher bass? Same price also.

The Superlux HD681B headphones feature a more prominent low-end response than the HD681, boosted in such a way as to not drown out the rest of the frequency response. Ideal for impactful bass in rock and dance music, these headphones are also great for media such as movies and gaming.

I only own the HD681 personally, I can’t throw them away because they still sound good, or could I sell them because nobody would buy second hand budget headphones. To be honest the HD668B are slightly v-shaped according to the measurement graph. In comparison to the balanced HD681 in this graph. I found a reddit thread that says the same thing, though it is 5 years ago. It depends if you want balanced normal perceived sound vs v-shaped with wider soundstage. If you listen to Hip hop, pop, modern rock and EDM then HD668B would sound best. Genres like classical, indie rock and bluegrass which have a more balanced low, mids and highs will sound lackluster with HD668B.

Oh, Sorry it completely went over my head that there’s a new headphone. Years ago there was only 681 and 668B. From the description it sounds like a 668B but using the 681’s headband and in black colour. Everything I’ve mentioned and compared earlier should be the same except the cosmetic differences.

Lots of good information there, thanks for the input.

@figarow: No problem. I actually found a Superlux 681 Series picture comparing the new 681B against 681 and 681F. I doubt increasing the bass with the new 681B will remove the high frequency treble away, that’s why I said its likeness to a similarly v-shaped 668B. If you see the picture all 681 Series models have similar high treble frequency after 5-10kHz. So it will still sound bright afterall but this time with more emphasised powerful bass like the 668B.

These are perfect for your needs. I've had a pair for a couple of years. They are very well made. It's like putting on some construction headphones how well they passively block outside noise. I don't even bother using the ANC or wireless mode. Supports the aptx codec as well, which was important at the time.

Also has a 3.5mm audio jack for unpowered use. Unlike most headphones in this ball park you can easily replace the cable, or just use bluetooth.

These ones look very similar, but unbranded. They're discounted by 18% right now.
