iPad Suggestions for Primary School Kid

Hi

My son is in year 4 and has been asked to get Ipad, it is not compulsory but when 90% of other kids have it in class am forced to get it too.

following specifications are from school:

iPad: 6th Gen or above (no cellular access please)
Minimum 32 GB
A10 chip or above
iOS 13 compatible or above

Please help to choose one at reasonable price.
I believe it would be used for next few years in school.

read through this post already but still not sure where to get the cheapest one!!

    Dear confused,

What part are you confused about?

Apple make a Tablet called an iPad.
You already have the Specs of "Non-Cellular" so it is WiFi.

Ask the school if an Apple Pencil is required and if the school has a code for https://www.jbeducation.com.au/byod/

    • What part are you confused about?

Probably whether to get an iPad Pro or a normal iPad

I think his question (?) is can we please help him get the sickest super exclusive secret handshake ozbargain^tm deal.

A bit tricky when they haven’t even told us if they are part of ozbargain platinum, if they are, they should be asking their questions in their dedicated forums.

      • Probably whether to get an iPad Pro or a normal iPad

yeah that also is confusing, does a kid need pro or normal one, keeping in view future requirements.

        • Could go inbetween and get an Air. I think Pro is overkill for a primary school student. Assume he'll have it until Year 9. Then you can get a Pro for the last three years of high school.

        • remember the child is year 4 student that aged 8 or 9 years old doesn't need a pro device really?

    • updated, how to get cheap deal on Ipad

  • Officially, unless you have a University Student at home, you will be paying $498 for the most basic iPad. Find discount GC JB or Apple and you should be able to get 10% off that price. If your kid needs to bring the iPad to school, I suggest you get AppleCare+ as well which has accidental coverage.

  • Just off topic, is it compulsory to get an iPad. I am in same boat but not in Apple ecosystem. Is there any Android alternative that we can use ..that is compatible with all school apps. Wondering if someone has gone to Android and no complaints
    Thanks

    • As an Android phone user, I would recommend an iPad just in case you need tech support.

    • I don't like Apple at all but they only want to use apple products at my kids school. I think its horrible to force everyone to get 1 type of device and he has android already. Not sure why an Apple is the only device allowed. As far as I can see the apps work on Android as well (the apps I know about anyway)

      • Yea, agree why force us. Thanks for your reply

  • The latest iPad is the one to get. Why buy a five year old one just to save a hundred bucks? It'll be out of date five years sooner, you'll be saving like $10 a year for the life of the device for a device that will always run slower than the current one.

I’m glad the school’s minimum specs are relatively low, as it means you have a little more flexibility than the other OP you referenced…

There are major stock shortages at the moment for the base model iPad (i.e. iPad 9) across pretty much every Australian retailer. In more “normal” times, I’d simply suggest getting an iPad 9, because it will do everything your kid would need from an iPad for the next few years, plus accessories (e.g. cases, keyboards, screen protectors) are more reasonably priced than for more expensive iPads, but these ain’t “normal” times… I would keep an eye out on the Apple website to see whether there is any stock available for click and collect from the Apple Store. Apple randomly drops stock whenever they can get stock in, so it is worth checking click and collect stock every day or so.

I would also suggest you keep an eye on the refurbished section of the Apple website, as some good deals crop up from time to time. The iPad 8 crops up from time to time on the refurbished section, and that is another reasonably solid iPad for the price. I personally think the cheapest iPad currently available on the refurbished section is overpriced for an iPad model that is almost five years old (and I know this, because I’m currently using one to type this comment). The only advantage it has is that it is available for purchase.

If you need an iPad ASAP, I would suggest you look into the base model iPad Air (4th gen). It is a very powerful iPad that exceeds the minimum specifications and will run very well for another four years or so, and if you get it soon through the Apple Education Store, you’ll get free/discounted AirPods (which you can keep, gift or sell to try and recoup some money). However, keep in mind it is likely to be replaced within the next month or two with an updated model, so you have been warned.

If you want to try and eek out more savings, you can also use discounted Apple gift cards to pay for any iPads from the Apple Store. However, you will miss out on any price protection or insurance or other benefits you can get through your credit card (assuming you have one), so a 4-5% saving may not be worth it for you. You can also use TCN or Ultimate gift cards (which sometimes are sold at a discount or with bonus Flybuys or Everyday Rewards points) to purchase Apple gift cards at JB Hi-Fi, but it is up to you whether that is worth the extra hassle…

Alternatively, you can attempt to get an iPad at authorised resellers (e.g. David Jones, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Retravision). However, they pretty much experience the same stock shortages as Apple (especially for the iPad 9), and Apple Education Store pricing is only available at JB Hi-Fi if you can provide evidence of your eligibility to access it (e.g. uni ID, school staff ID). There are more options for discounted gift cards for some of these authorised resellers, but you may be better off going through the Apple Store in this case.

    • Thanks for the detailed answer, I think I will wait for IPAD 9!

  • Try school locker But keep in mind that there maybe delays due to shortage of stock.

I ordered 3 iPads 9th gen 256gb and tool just little over a month to receive.

Apple price is $729 for Wi-Fi 256gb 9th gen but I got them for $661.

    Hope this helps!!
