Speed Issues on nbn FTTN with Internode

Hi guys,

I've been with Internode for years and have never had any problems with them. They have been a very stable and reliable ISP.

Though, it has been brought to my attention by one of my classmates that my Internet speeds are very low.

My classmate is on FTTN with Telstra and he's getting around 250Mbps download speed, whereas I'm only getting 27Mbps.

Is there anything I can do to make my download speeds faster?

Is this a problem with Internode?

Is it a problem with my copper wiring?

The FTTN box is located in the next street, so it's not too far away…

I'm on a 50Mbps plan with Internode and I believe that they advertise up to 43Mbps download speeds…

Any ideas?

Kind Regards,

John

The FTTN box in the next street might not be the one you are connected to. To identify which node you are connected to, follow this guide:-

    https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/home-broadband/how-do…

Speed issues can also be caused by your equipment and cable quality. Are you connecting your PC directly to the modem? What sort of modem do you have?

  • My modem is shared with my network via Wifi and a network switch…

But that shouldn't make a difference…as the local network is far quicker than the NBN connection and will not be the bottleneck in the system…

I'm not sure what kind of modem it is, as it was supplied by Internode and it has a big "Internode" sticker on the front…

    Thanks for the link.

    Kind Regards,

    John

Do your speed tests with a wired (ethernet) cable direct from modem connected to a PC/laptop (to eliminate WIFI).
Turn your modem over to see model and how to log into it to get sync speed/statistics.
Call internode and ask them your line distance and sync rate.
Check how many phone sockets are in the house.

No NBN users on FTTN are getting 250Mbps (currently ~100Mbps is the max), your classmate must have HFC/FTTP or something.

Yeah, all of this above. Max speed on FTTN is 100 so your classmate is talking out his azz. There are lots of variables that can cause this with FTTN

    • Thanks, Costanza!

I love the name, by the way!!

      That's gold, Jerry, gold!!!

      I'm back, babayyy!!!

I just got off the phone with Internode and they got me to do some basic checks (pretty much what you mentioned in your post) and they're going to escalate it to the NBN for further investigation.

I would agree with you that my classmate probably has HFC or FTTP, because I honestly don't think that copper can do 250Mbps.

      • A good quality Lead In on a FttC connection might be able to hit 250.

  • I'm going to assume you are connected by copper wiring to the FTTN box.

It sounds very much like the terrible copper wire performance that was predicted before Australians voted for Turnbull to ruin the NBN. You know, $60 billion to Telstra so that you use copper wire instead of fibre.

And naturally you are getting ripped off for it as well because Australians were so foolish that they voted to build the infrastructure for the private sector to rip them off with.

    Breathtaking really.

The old PSTN has been replaced. All the LiC are now new.

      • +2

I'm not sure what you mean by the old PSTN having been replaced - it is still the same decades old copper wires from your house to the node for FTTN.

The only NBN customers who got all new infrastructure are the lucky FTTP recipients. Even the FTTC and FTTB customers still have the old copper wire between the pit in the street (or their building's basement) and the modem.

The old TLS PSTN has been decommissioned.

All the LiC are brand new.

          • +1

@rektrading: All the LIC are not brand new. Most of the LIC are the old ones from Telstra. Only some of the LIC were replaced due to faults.

            • -1

@Twix: Contractors made bank by doing new LiC.

Property owners that didn't say yes to a new LiC (free and paid for by taxpayers) were shortchanged.

              • @rektrading: Good for the workers.

Most property owners were never given the option for a new LIC. The point of the MTM network was to use most of the existing infrastructure. The whole country was shortchanged and now nbn are building out FTTP again.

Wondered how long it would be before Diji1 would see the opportunity to add their regular political rhetoric to a post, rather than give a helpful answer.

Rudd’s gone, Gillards gone, Abbotts gone and so has Turnbull, why can’t you move on as well. It’s getting a little ho humish 🥱

  • This must be one of the most well written posts in a LONG TIME

    • Thankyou, supasaiyan!

1 Are you certain that your service is 50/20 plan?
    Check your bill.

    2) Call Internode and ask them what your "maximum attainable line rate" is.
If they tell you something less than 50mbps, then ask them why they never contacted you to downgrade your plan to something the line is capable of achieving.
And ask for a discount for the time which you were paying for a service they haven't been delivering.

      Yes, yes, yes.

It's 50Mbps down, not sure about upload speed.

I just got off the phone with Internode and they may credit me all the bills I've paid for 50Mbps line speed but only gotten 25Mbps.

      • The upload speed is 20Mbps. What do you get on a speedtest with a wired ethernet connection?

      • -1

Yeah sadly, as mentioned by @Diji1 above, FttN technology is substandard, some will get 100mbps, others can't even get 25mbps and everyone else are somewhere in between.
This was a known issue when Tony Abbott decided to write a blank cheque for NBNCo to switch from FttP to FttN or HFC.

We've ended up spending at least 3/4 the total spend for maybe a tenth of the performance with a far higher operational cost and a laughably short lifespan (NBNCo already upgrading FttN to FttC technology).

Welcome to then LNP's "faster, cheaper, sooner" (defintiely not faster, upfront cost cheaper but certainly not end cost, and completion date of 2016 (actually 2021).

And remember the Liberal's other baldfaced lies about this entire project, like "upgrading from FttN to FttP will cost $3000", compared to the actual average Technology Choice quotes which seem to be around $12,000.

PS. I'm not a one sided Labor supporter, I've voted both Labor and Liberal across 30 years of voting. But Liberals have told the fattest lies in my lifetime.
I'm old enough to vaguely remember that John Howard is, by his own measure, our worst treasurer ever ! Go check out the economic debacle he handed over in the early eighties. Self proclaimed "superior economic managers" my arse, he just lucked out on being in Power while the Chinese Economy grew in Double Digits across the nineties.
Arguably his economic shitness continued and we should have been in a far better position than that which he left us!

        • (NBNCo already upgrading FttN to FttC technology).

The upgrade path for FTTN (selected locations) and FTTC (most locations) is to swap both of them to FTTP.

  • Worst ever experience from BELONG, they disconnected my 30 NBN plan after being with them for 5 years without my knowledge and after lodging support email (can't talk to human being BTW) they asked me to re-join / re-apply at much higher price!! WTF.. To make it worse, they refusing to refund me the remaining 25days left of the already paid month. I will have no option but to lodge formal complain to the Telecommunication OMBUDSMAN. NOT HAPPY JAN.
Joined MORE at cheaper rate, higher speed, much better service with people you can call them in case you need help.

    • Have a read here about this issue

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/650813

My guess is that they have been sending you details and you did not see/read them or your contact details are incorrect or out of date

      • Non of this apply to me, I was on the 30NBN plan for few years. Belong just sent me email 3 weeks ago saying since I moved to another provider (which is not the case), then my service has been cancelled. They said may be one of my household did, I said I live by myself, then they said may be you enquired with another provider, I said I never enquired with another provider, so they ran out of possible reasons. Their customer support (based somewhere in Asia) are useless and liars, after I lodged support email, they sent me standard email to re-join as new customer, I said I am not happy and want to discuss this with someone, then couple of days later I receive email saying as it is after normal hour to contact customers, they will contact during normal hours, and a week pass and I receive email saying case closed!! this is PATHETIC..
