Arc welder is also discounted at $39. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/192207439004

    • Damn out of stock

      • I was the first to buy, no confirmation yet so you haven't missed out on anything yet.

Only used old school Mig Welders with Argon connected. Whats the go here, assume gas less wire? Comes with wire? What does 100A limit you to?

    • Very basic welding and probably limited to about 2.5mm of steel thickness.
I'm no welder but would consider this for the price if I had small jobs and was confident I could get it to do the job.
Better much more expensive machines would be easier to use though.

        "2.5mm of steel thickness.
        I'm no welder "

A common misconception. Thicker than 4mm and you bevel the plates. You can then do the 2/5mm root run, fill with two runs [ more if needed] along the plate edges then finish with a capping run.

The " better more expensive" machines would offer you +ve, -ve and AC feeds with multiple core liner, wire gauge and gas options - or enough to be able to make terrible choices and an absolute pig's-ear of the job…

        • +1

I've heard you can just cut and switch the wires to change polarity which should perform better gasless welds, will void the warranty tho

          • @Mike444: Yep, but use Sellotape rather than masking tape to re-insulate them as the masking tape turns brittle after a while and flakes get in the bead.

good price, but after check my collection of unused tools, i discovered i already have one …

    • same problem, have 2 x mig already, have only used one ……. next one i will splurge and get one with removable gun ….risk with the impulse bargain tools is buying crap ones not good ones …. rather killer deal on good ones.

    • +12

What a vote of confidence riding on a bike u welding together. Hats off

      • +1

haha - beats using my brain or tax laws/coding. i do tons of research and youtube tutorials and it usually makes sense

which one should i get - mig or arc?

I've asked the same question to a number of people, here's what they told me.

Arc (stick) welders are good for welding thicker metals, like 3mm thick or thicker. Skilled welders may be able to weld thinner materials, but as a beginner, you'd find yourself melting holes in the metal instead of welding.

Mig works much better for thinner materials.

If you are going to make bike parts, I reckon you'll also need a gas torch. Welded joints are more brittle than the original metal, they need to be reheated after welding to anneal the metal, which reduces the brittleness.

You are referring to post weld heat treatment, which is normally for very thick joints. I think you meant to say preheat, which is to reduce weld cooling rate to prevent hard microstructures

        • I did not know about preheat, thanks for the info!

    • Mig would be the way to go but to be honest I would look for better welders on clearance.
Just keep watch at total tools or similar and wait for something to come up.
Even better industrial auctions are great places to score big.

Thanks all! I ended up buying the cheap arc welder posted above. After how quick the mig went oos. Fomo

  • OOS

  • anyone know any more nsw locations

    • Purchased online last night and got sent a refund this morning. No chance now.

  • Lot of reviews say order cancelled as item out of stock. Are super cheap super quick in updating inventory on eBay? Considering the ozbargain factor of everyone jumping on a deal?

  • +2

I know this is (exceedingly) cheap but gasless welding is a pain especially if you have no experience. Don’t ruin what is a really fun hobby with crap gear, put the $49 toward a TAFE short course and use decent equipment.

*ignore the above if you’re a farmer and just want a cheap piece of crap to weld rusty tractor frames out in the paddock.

  • Ordered like 2 minutes after the deal was posted and just collected from SCA Chermside. Cheers OP.

  • I ordered one last night but it says that is processing.. probably I will lose mine

    • Maybe they getting stock from other stores

  • Ordered yest - delivered today!

Haven't had a chance to open the box yet though

    • Which one your order ? Mig welder ?

      • Yeah the mig. Still haven't tried it, ordered a better welding helmet.

Need to get some scrap metal to practice on and find some time!

  • Did anyone end up buying the Arc welder? I was first to buy as pickup in store but a week later (today) I had to call them as order not processed and there is no stock they have to refund.
