      • Didn't Sandra like you wearing lycra in the sun?

        • She did but unfortunately she took it with her before I could wash it. I’m looking for a new one, if only this deal comes with it I’d be stoked!

      If only!!

      • • Member benefits and discounts from partners.

        but no details ?

Good price and a good service for those who ride a lot on the road or in congestion. Not just to insure yourself but for any collisions where you’re at fault and hit a car.

I regularly get emails about "FREE" membership to the bicycle network, but much like this offer, you have to sign up and PAY for 12 months to get the bonus. Its not free at all.

The post says an extra 12 months free. 50% off a 2 year membership doesn't sound too bad to me.

  • Can 8yrs kid join alone or have to be with family?
My kid rides on the footpath when she goes to school and I am looking for bike insurance, just in case.

      Can 8yrs kid join alone

Do they have a credit card?

and I am looking for bike insurance,

      This won't insure your bike

    • Have you looked at AusCycling? They don't provide bike insurance but its pretty good otherwise, they also now accept the kids voucher schemes.

      https://www.auscycling.org.au/membership/other/kidsvouchers

    • I mean not for bike, for liability if my kid damaged someone's car or hurt someone.

    • If you have home contents insurance, then you and your family may already be covered for legal liability for when you're away from your home. Check your policy.

      • Thank you.

  • $131 for 12 months plus a year extra for free

  • This is injury insurance. To insure your bike, look at your existing Contents policy.

Dubious value before “free” 12 month in effect a permanent 50% discount. Your health insurance likely covers for everything this BN does and if not, other motorist’s 3rd party does.
Soon there will be someone insuring you just to walk to the shops…

This insurance doesn't really cover much but most likely will be useful in scenarios such as:

    • you crash your bike onto the back of a Ferrari
    • you run your own business or you have no more sick leave while recovering
    • you are being hospitalised 100km away from home and need additional expenses such as the fuel expense of your spouse to take care of you or clothes etc

I had 2 different accidents while i was a member and could claim nothing:
    - accident on the road in Blackrock (no surgery, but was in cast for 4 months) and no additional expenses such as taxi or takeaway meals can be claimed (couldn't drive my manual car and couldn't cook first 4 weeks)
    - mtb accident in you yang, got hospitalised 3 days and left after surgery on right arm, life pretty much returned quite normal in 2 weeks

In both conditions home assistance was pretty much only given if you are at the level where you can't get out of bed, which i thought its already provided free by Medicare anyway…

    • Sorry to hear your story. When did these happen and who did you have to deal with when attempting to put in claims? Bicycle network or the underwritng agency or with the insurers directly?

      • These happened in 2016 and 2020…

        I didn't have to claim anything fortunately…

All the medical expenses were covered by Medicare at the hospital without even any admin/paper work.

Just to clarify, i wasn't saying that BN rejected my claims cause there wasn't any scenario that I had in the past that could allow me to claim anything through them anyway…

Read the PDS and you will realise you probably don't need it…

I used to have it cause i used to ride to work bearly every day and i may accidentally damage an expensive car haha but these days i WFH all the time…

        • I'm in the same boat when pre covid and pre kids I used to ride most days to work and it was a "nice to have, just in case" type of insurance.

I don't know if I stopped paying or the credit card has expired but I don't think I am paying this now especially with covid (I might need to check my bank statements).

I read the PDS and the insurers currently are Chubb (personal accident) and AIG (Liability) both I used to work for, and their claims are not difficult to deal with.

you crash your bike onto the back of a Ferrari

The Ferrari is not the only thing to worry about. Many of the other bikes on the cycleway are $10K plus!

  • Is this available for renewals for existing members? I'm billed monthly at the moment and it isn't clear from the linked page or the member portal.

  • I am interested in getting membership - mostly because I have heard horror stories of people being at fault for a bike-bike accident that lead to another person being injured and having to pay out a significant amount of money due to the injuries the other person sustained.

  • i was a member for a few months. the rider rescue is an additional option and probably more useful than basic membership (you and your bike get an uber ride back home up to 10 times a year).

just be aware that trying to end your membership isn't as straightforward as you think. there's no option on the website, and even if you change your credit card details on the membership portal, they still somehow retain your old card and keep billing it when your other card "doesn't work." i had to call my bank to put a stop on them helping themselves to my funds, and only then did they end my membership. or so i thought because the bank's fraud department called me a couple of months later over an unusual charge to the "Conlon Family" in AUD.

    • Did you try calling Bicycle Network to cancel first? Reporting fraud to your bank feels like it would have taken just as much time, and a change mind really isn't fraud.

  • A great deal for new members with a 50% discount!
But how about offering some form of a discount to the many loyal members who have been members for many years (in my case > 10 years)?

The most useful part of membership for me has been the access to free legal advice relating to accidents.
Some years ago while riding I struck a car that pulled up suddenly in the middle of a roundabout, and the advice I received was very helpful in negotiating the situation.

If it had come to paying for damage to the car, the third party cover would have been useful too.
