Bit of a niche product. Maybe best for people who are prepping for the apocalypse in their underground bunker and still want access to fresh veggies. Maybe you don't want your neighbours knowing you are growing rocket.

We used to have a hydroponic garden when we were kids but I think that was more of an educational project than anything else. RRP is $1999, currently that at both their own website and at HN, so it is a $400 saving.

The Family Farm is the pinnacle of urban agriculture is made available to everyday people! With its' stylish and robust metal frame, water aeration pumps, water level indicators and powerful LED lights - you'll be growing your favourite food in no time! Plants growing in the family farm grow hydroponically, meaning their roots float in a nutrient solution that gives them everything they need to grow. Grow 72 plants at once and experience massive yields of refreshing fresh food grown at home in all light conditions within weeks. The Family Farm is one of the only things in your home that actually generate a ROI, and with its quick setup in under 20 mins you can get growing in the time it takes to eat breakfast!

You could put this together yourself for less than $500 and minimal effort. There's lots of guides on the internet 😂.

    • do you have a recommended guide that provides a nice clean layout/design?

      • +7

Not one in particular. Google "DWC DIY guide" for the hydroponics side then buy a shelf from IKEA to put them on then peruse grow forums to work out which are the good LED lights to get off Alibaba - I think the current best are Kingbrite maybe?

The total wattage of this this is 120w so don't expect to grow much if anything without swapping out the lights.

lots of guides but can't provide one. Makes sense

@sauce2k6: It's literally just a DWC tub and some LED lights on a shelf. As I said google DWC DIY and there'll be plenty of guides.

          • @sauce2k6: They are all on the dark Web

@janoski: Growing "tomatoes" is legal in a lot of countries, so readily available friendo 🤷‍♀️

        • +3

I did precisely as u said and googled DWC DIY and No 1 result has changed my life

          "How to grow DWC Cannabis"

          Thanks!

Here is one using IKEA Milsbo $299 https://rachelaust.me/blog/milsbo-greenhouse-cabinet

        • It does look really nice. Not something that anyone can just put together though.

            @ozbs25: Which part?

The zip ties, the 3M strips, or the out-of-the-box smart plug? :p

            • @String name: Just the drill or hacksaw would instantly put some people off. Let's face it, some people aren't very handy.

              • @ozbs25: Preferring to spend $1500 in place of using a drill is on them then.

I'm pretty sure the bulk of people here would have no problems using basic ubiquitous tools.

Was worth the trip just to see Rachel!

    • True - but I reckon that it's the plug and play aspect of this that appeals to some.

      • Total wattage in its current state is 120w so you're going to be replacing those lights.

    • Looks like a cool practical science sort of project. I'll have to remember to come back to it some time down the track.

    • It's a bit like the people who buy big name prebuilt PCs vs the people who build a PC piecemeal. Can definitely save some money if you buy the parts separately from different stores and build it yourself. Some people just don't want to go to all that trouble, they need it now or they just factor in how much money their time is worth.

I get that but this is like paying the price of a modern gaming PC for a computer that can only run Solitaire. With 120w running the whole system all you’re going to be able to grow are some leafy greens and even then it will be slow. If you get this and find you do enjoy it as a hobby you’re going to end up upgrading and customising it almost immediately, negating the plug and play benefits. Just buy one of the dinky desktop grow kits off Catch instead, it will be just as effective and you’ll have less junk to throw out when you upgrade/lose interest.

        • I appreciate your posts. It's good to have feedback good and bad. I'll probably go and look at some of the projects that you were talking about.

Some people care very much about the environment, sustainability or whatever. Some people just want to look like they do. Image is everything to some people. There's probably more than a few people who want to do something like this, at least partly for show, but don't want to go to too much trouble. If it makes them feel better, great. Some of those people would take a look at the price tag of the dinky desktop grow kits and get insulted. That doesn't mean you can't try to save a little bit of money even if overall it doesn't really make much sense.

      OzBargain comment of the day!

with that price tag it shouldn't be on this site.

there are much cheaper DYI options
there are cheaper alternative options for Indoor garden on the market (2 min google search gave me 3 solutions that look very much similar for 1/2 the price, which is still about 3 times to much for this type of setup IMHO)

does anyone actually sale anything RRP this days?

    • +2

Plenty of people think I'm crazy paying $500 for a rice cooker but I'm really happy with the purchase. I wouldn't buy this thing but thought it was an interesting product that some people may be interested in. Sure it's expensive but there are some people who may genuinely want one and $400 off isn't bad.

      • Zojirushi or Tiger?

        • Cuckoo actually. Got it from Costco.

  • What's the point of these?

  • Perfect for my "At Home" business :^)

  • how many um, happy herb plants could you grow with this system?

  • Yikes! $1599 for some plastic shelves and lights. I love the line in the product description: "The Family Farm is one of the only things in your home that actually generate a ROI". Unless you are dealing in the wacky tobaccy its going to take a long time to ROI for Cos lettuce and Basil.

    • Conveniently neglects to put in the cost of running the pumps and buying hydroponic fertilizers. This is hobby product that costs money not make it.

  • +1

    Assume this is tax deductible?

  • Go on to facebook marketplace and google 'grow tent' - a lot of people are selling full grow setups for around $500. I don't know why tomato plants need an extraction vent with a carbon filter, they must be smelly plants!
