Pioneer VSX-S300 Slimline Receiver with Speakers and Bonus Blu-Ray Player $349 @Dick Smith

240

Courtesy of docmoh (link: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/67852)

Saw this the other day and it was a pretty good deal. Now, it has become an awesome deal as you can also get a free Pioneer Blu-ray player which is priced in Dick Smith at $179. I had a look at the review of the player yesterday, it was OK.

Possibly one day and online only (see the webpage)? I also note on the catalogue, the price for this combo is $399.

  • damn thats a good deal

  • damn thats a good deal

  • Forgot to add the spec for the Blu-ray player:
    http://www.pioneer.com.au/au/products/BDP-140/print.html

  • Is the bonus brplayer by redemption or in store?

    • You can order online and collect in-store. It will automatically be added on your order.

  • I ordered one to collect in store - the bluray player doesn't seem to be listed anywhere in my order so I hope they actually honor it!

    • Same with my order. I'll just show them their website if they are unaware.

      • Take a printout of the website like I have done, just in case….

      • The reason mine didnt confirm the order for the bluray player aswell was because they were out of stock. Took half an hour but they managed to find another store willing to give up a bluray player. Have to go back to pick it up in a few days but happy to take the amp/speakers home today.

  • The ARC only works when you are playing movie from the player to the TV, but it does not downstream the sound of normal TV programme to the speaker system, so you will still need an optical table for normal free to air tv watching.

    • Should the player plug in receiver and receiver sends audio & video to TV?

      • The Blu-ray Player? Plug it into the receiver, the receiver will then power the speakers and the video only will be sent back to the TV. The TV's built-in speakers are not used for the audio.

    • If your TV also supports ARC you should not need an optical cable, and should be able to listen to audio from FTA TV via the single HDMI connection.

Edit: that is the fuction of ARC, ARC has nothing to do with sending video or audio from AVR to TV, it is Audio Return Channel for sending the TV's audio back to the AVR via HDMI, both AVR an TV need to support ARC.

      • still doesn't work, i had connected V1.4 HDMI from my TV ARC HDMI port to HDMI port 1/2/3 on my pioneer blueray player and nothing can be heard from TV.

        • You don't need an extra HDMI cable for ARC, plug the HDMI cable from the HDMI output on the AVR into the HDMI input that supports ARC on the TV, you need to enable HDMI-CEC/control features on both devices.

If all settings are correct ARC should now work with just one cable between AVR -> TV.

    • ARC works, I bought on the weekend and it works well.

ARC sends the audio from the TV channel you are watching to the Receiver through the HDMI cable. It's got nothing to do with playing movies on DVD or BluRay players.

      • Sorry Blackrose, I just repeated your post

        • No worries wizzfizz.

@ jeff9999 see my post above re which ports to use.

      • hi wizzfizz, can you show me which port from TV you connect the HDMI to which port on the pioneer receiver/blueray player? i've got the HTZ-818BD and sony HX820. thanks.

        • To use ARC, it's probably best to plug the blu ray player into the BD port on the receiver. Then plug the HDMI out port on the receiver to the TV. There should be a port on the TV which says ARC, at least my Toshiba did. You may need to look up the manual if it's not marked up on the TV. As Blackrose said you should make sure that HDMI-CEC features are activated on all units.
I'm not really a big expert on these things, you may have to call up Pioneer if you are still having issues.

  • It should be fine. This deal is avail on their latest catalogue except for the price.

It is strange coz I have got the bluray player on my order confirmation.

    How powerful are the speakers?

    • very powerful!! uses the DARK side of the FORCE!!

  • Sold Out Online

    • You can still do "Click & Collect" to pick up for this price at a store that has stock

Edit: It's a bit unintuitive but here's how to do it-
      Add it to your cart
      Click "View Cart & Checkout"
Then there's a "Click & Collect" tab to choose
Select a store with stock and click "Collect from here" then it should be good to go

      • Yes realise that but all locations have "Low Stock" call store

      • Have you ever tried Click & Collect with the two bits in different stores?

  • Absolutely awesome deal, I wish I needed some new speakers :(

  • Specs doesn't talk any thing about speakers! Does it comes with speaker as well? or only just receiver?

    • Look at the DSE URL once it's expanded.

  • Nowhere to click and collect near me (sydney)

    • Worth you calling around where it says "low stock".

  • +1

awesome deal, ordered to collect. might sell the 3d blu ray player since i use my ps3

    • No harm keeping a spare. Afterall, I didn't know whether to plug my PS3 into the "BD" or "Game" HDMI connection! ;)

      • true, also the ps3 bluray laser has limitted life span, to what i heard

        • Not a bad idea, the early fat Ps3s had a pretty weak laser so saving some wear would be good

  • Sweet deal! Went and picked up a set at store not long ago!

Dude at the store was telling me they have changed the price to $399 now or something… but he still honour the $349 deal from click and collect via online store. All good!

Oh and get yourself a trolley. Huge box!

  • they are all listed as Low Stock, I cannot order on their web for click and collect.
and i called one of the store, they said they can do it for $399, not the price $349 listed on the website.

how do you guys ordered yours on web and get click & collect $349 with blu-ray player?

  • oh crap. I am only going to collect them tomorrow. If they don't honor the price of $349 then i'm not buying

  • Are these perfect speakers for a Home Media System?
How would they rank out of 10?

    • The speakers are only going be basic at this price level, okay for smaller rooms but won't fill larger rooms with good sound, best thing about this deal is as it contains a proper AV receiver you can easily upgrade to better speakers at a later date.

  • Are the rear speakers wireless?

    • No

  • Ugh, I have not been able to order these.

There is some at some stores, but then they don't have the blu-ray player, so you can neither put aside for pickup / click & collect, nor order / click & collect.

  • Just spoke to my local store Hastings (3915) "oh it doesnt come with the blu ray" "oh it was meant to finish yesterday" "I don't see it (the bonus offer under overview)" "they just sent an email through saying it was an error but we'll do it anyway" so full of it. They honoured it anyway but they quoted me the $399 price in the catalog. Got it for $349

  • How big is the sub woofer? Are there any details on the speakers themselves?

    • 16cm 100W Subwoofer, details on the speakers are very hard to find.

  • I just read the review of the Bluray player… apparently DVD is region free but Bluray is region locked. I need to check when i get home.

    • yes, you are right

  • Annoyingly I bought the deal on Saturday without the bluray player.

The unit works but had a couple of scratches on it. Was obviously repacked. I'm not too worried about it as long as I can get my bluray player! The unit works well enough. I just called up the store and they are kidnly finding me a bluray player and putting it aside for me.

The speakers are not big. Loud enough for my purposes but I will probably upgrade in the future.

I'm not an audiophile though. If it works it works. I like the size of the receiver too, it's quite discreet.

  • damn, they just update the price to $399 now…when i was ordering from phone…

  • Now, price is change to $399 with bluray player

  • +2

if anyone wants this, i managed to get 2 orders through because my first one was rejected by the store. but after putting a complaint up the chain, i managed to get it and picking it up soon.

so if anyone wants one, i can pass them my 2nd order, but you will have to pick it up yourself from the Morley store in Perth WA. $349 with the player and the speakers and the av receiver. they did say the blu ray player was a display model though as they had little/close to no stocks (most stores ran out anyway…).

    if you're interested PM me.

    • I wouldn't mind it, however your profile is set to disallow new private messages.

I've enabled mine, so you could contact me if I'm first.

      • sent ya a message

      • hi mate. as messaged, please tell me if you aren't going for it as the guy below "terencelevin" is interested too.

    • I'm also interested. Pm me if it's still available

      • hi terence. ive asked doctorowl to tell me if he's not going for it as its only for today. will message you the reservation number if he's decided not to use it.only fair as he was first to message.

        • Thanks

      • hi sorry mate, doctor owls' taken it.

    • Thanks anyway. Enjoy doctorowl!

      • Yup, I got it. Nearly toppled myself carrying it down the escalators, and looked stupid having to put the box down every few metres :-P

Having not seen any proper reviews of them, I can only say the VSX-S300 package is pretty damn good. The speakers are S-HS50, and the sub is powered (in the booklet it refers to an unpowered sub, which must be an earlier model).

100W per speaker, 100W sub. I'm coming from Creative Gigaworks S750 system with 70W speakers and 250W sub (and slightly better range), but this is just as good - at least for movies. The sound from the smaller speakers is really clear. I haven't tested the sub thoroughly but it seems nice and not too overpowering.

The unit has an OSD (on screen display) to configure stuff, and you HAVE to do this in order to stop the DEMO mode indicators. However, it doesn't work over HDMI and you need to plug it in through a component cable to go through all of that. That's… annoying.

Also just out of interest, if you're hooking it up to a PS3 (Slim only), you'll get more audio options going through HDMI than the digital optical input.

Incase you guys wanna try something shifty and say you screenshotted the order but it wouldnt let you proceed!

  • For those who have the units unpacked already, does it come with HMDI cables (blu ray - AVR) (AVR - TV)??? or do i need to purchase them?

    • If you already have a blu-ray to tv hdmi cable, then you need just one extra cable - either another hdmi cable to go from the avr to tv, or a digital optical (toslink) cable to carry just the audio from the blu-ray to the avr.

GAME in Carousel is selling those toslink cables for $2 each right now.

    • Just to clarify, after opening, there is no HDMI cable. Interesting.

  • i think u need to purchase hdmi cables as the guy at DSE asked if i wanted any because theyre not included. $20 each he was selling em for

  • does anyone know with 100 more you can get htz 818BD?

  • From where?

    • try jb, 500 is a normal price. or let me know if you want receipt.

  • Rang DS and got them to put one on hold for me before the price changed to $399. Went to pick it up after it had changed and they are saying they can no longer honour that price!
Anyone have a copy of receipt i can show them to prove the price was down at $349 today?

    Furious to put it mildly!

  • Thanks Xetrok. Used your screen dump and after threatening consumer affairs they have spoken with management and agreed to honour the price. Thanks heaps for your help.

    • It's sad because (the recent gaming non-sale debacle) DSE is usually pretty good about these things. I have a feeling the staff just aren't empowered and need management nods to put things through in the edge cases.

      • Turns out I'm wrong, DSE policies appear to have changed lately - they're quite strict on returns and other stuff they used to be good on (i.e. there is a no change of mind policy now). That sucks.

  • I just bought the last set from George st sydney $399, showed them the screenshot and the manager said no to match the online $349 price.
