Cost to Install Privacy Fence for Frontage

Hi,

Just wondering what costs would be considered reasonable to supply and install a new aluminum slatted privacy fence and gate for the frontage for a terrace home in inner city Sydney.

Being a terrace the frontage is comparatively narrow to many houses. Length being 3.5m + 1m for the gate and 1.2m for the side shared wall with neighbour. Height is 1.8m

I have been quoted 5.7k for the supply and install.. over 2k for the install alone which seems exorbitant given the material is precut Aluminium and arrives in panels ready to install which should only take a professional a few hours…

Has anyone had a Aluminium fence installed recently and can advise costings.

Thanks.

Just get a 2nd quote; if a huge disparity, maybe even a 3rd quote.

I imagine that just the logistical pain of a job in 'inner city Sydney' would bump up the costs.

Yeah I'm getting more quotes, however, I'd like to know what others have paid for comparable installs, if possible. Inner city being in the suburbs not cbd, there's plenty of manufacturing / warehouse spaces around here also so logistics for this area shouldn't be much of an issue.

The price really seems like a gouge although this might be the covid wfh tax that trades are charging now…

    • I paid $8k for around 20m of fencing. No gate. Also slatted aluminium but with space between the slats. Let me know if you want a pic.

It would have been $4k for colourbond but I wanted to be able to see through it (my study window looks onto the fence). There was a storm which knocked the old wooden fence over and the insurance contributed $3.8k which was a good opportunity to get the fence I wanted. Oh and it took 3 people about 4 hours to put up

      • Thanks this sounds exactly like what I'm looking for slats with gaps for sun etc albeit only nrrding a fraction of the size but with an additional gate. The install time sounds right to me for pro's.

It does seem alot but its like just the time it takes (whether you are building a 20 metre length of fence, or a 2 metre one), especially the time it takes to drive around to get supplies etc.

If you are handy, and have a few mates who are, and already have/access to some power tools, you probably can get it done for a few hundred max. One of my neighbors and I replace some old wooden fence with metal fences about 15 to 20m, only costs us 2 days of 2 peoples work, and less than 250 each, and 1 afternoon of picking up supplies, he also had mates who source and supplied the metal poles for reinforcement at costs

We got some quotes and the they were all around 5-7k in Melbourne about 18 months ago now. Plus they would not have put in metal poles with cement as foundation. What you are paying for is someone's time, not just putting up the fence but driving around and buying/collecting supplies.

edit: i should also say, paying for assumed expertise…

    • Yeah, the quote is from a fencing manufacturing business and I've provided measurements and dimensions required. It's slatted aluminum which is pretty common. No fancy colours, just black. So I'd hope they have materials and the job is pretty straightforward. The install is on top of an existing low brick/ cement wall. Whilst I'm no expert the installation seems pretty straightforward once the fence is pre cut and framed up. Very simply it would be Measure and drill holes in the brick/ cement to align fence panels and supports tgen ensure are straight/ level and bolt in. Same for the gate. No problems with paying for experts time just > 2k install seems exorbitant for a fence this size.

  • What does the quote say needs doing?

    • It's a new fence install ontop of a low existing brick wall. Materials supply and install close to 7k.

      • Love the simple quote interpretation…. Missing allot more I bet.

How are they attaching the ends? Is there anything about demo or removal of old "stuff"? Stuff could be anything.

        • The quote is not itemized to that detail. Fencing is attached to posts installed into the existing brick and forms as an L shape to the wall by design. There's not much else to it. I'm sure there will be clean up but nothing crazy.

          • @CauseNEffect: Tiping fees will be $400 to $500 and time to go to and from tip at $75/hr
Pickup of the material will take an hour say.
There is also the cost of wear and tear on equipment (drills, etc).
There is also the cost of cutting discs or cutting equipment that are NOT included in the prices of the fence from Bunnies. The fence will need at least one or more of the lengths cut ot the required length.
There is also the cost of dynabolts that are NOT included in the prices of the fence from Bunnies.
There is also the cost of drills that are NOT included in the prices of the fence from Bunnies.
There is the cost of replacing the posts that are NOT included in the prices of the fence from Bunnies.
There is the cost of the locks and latches that may or may not be in the prices of the fence from Bunnies.
There is the traveling time to and from their workshop to the residence.
There is also a cost associated with buying goods before getting paid that need to be factored in.

You are also paying for the experience of someone who hopefully knows how to do the actual install.

There are web sites that give quotes, but you will have to find them. I used them last year for a paling fence estimate before I got quotes so that I knew the price range that was expected.

Haha thanks 😊. He's not my neighbour, thankfully.

  • It does not matter what fellow OZB'ers think is a fair price - they are not the ones that will eventually do the job.
Just go out and get half a dozen (or more) quotes and this will give you a firm indication of what the job will cost - not necessarily what it is worth!

    • It does matter if its a fair price to me, since I've asked.. worth is what someone is willing to pay and I'm seeing if it's a fair price.

as above get 3 quotes and you'll see what's market rate. does sound expensive though you can buy DIY kits from places like modularwalls for 100-120 per metre +gst

  • Thanks I had not seen this site.

Most of that quote would be to cover their parking tickets.

    • They can park right out the front in my spot ,thankfully….

Check out some of these (steel, aluminum, or plastic) at bunnings. Overlap them to fit if needed. (or cut them if you are handy). Attach them with thick cable ties from $2 shop.

    etc

    • Confirm, this is what the Victorian Government used at quarantine hotels throughout the pandemic.

    • These are very close to what I'm looking for just byo style.. cable ties would likely suffice for the interim, however, I'm looking for a long term solution. Thanks for these though very much the ozbargain option. 😉.
