Roccat Burst Core Optical Gaming Mouse $19 + Shipping or $0 NSW Pickup (+ Surcharge) @ Mwave

90

For anyone looking for a budget gaming mouse that punches well above its weight and shares a lot of characteristics with the modern lightweight gaming mouse trend without the high cost, the ROCCAT Burst Core is currently on sale at Mwave for $20. Promotions lasts until next Sunday (13th of March, 2022) or while stocks last.

Practical downgrades compared to Burst Pro:

  • Stiffer rubber cable vs flexible braided. Low sens users will need a bungee of some kind to anchor the cable.
  • Lift off distance is fixed at between 2.4 and 3.6mm. The Pro has 2 settings. One for under 1.2mm and another for between 1.2 and 2.4mm. Only relevant for low sens users who lift the mouse frequently to recentre it.
  • Standard black dyed PTFE feet vs 100% virgin PTFE. Hardcore aimers will notice the dyed feet are slightly slower and don't glide as well as virgin PTFE, but most people won't care.

Downgrades on paper that almost nobody will care about:

  • PMW 3331 vs 3389. Largely meaningless. Most people will not hit the maximum tracking speeds of modern high end sensors vs mid range.
  • 8 500 maximum CPI vs 16 000. Again, meaningless. It's a marketing number. Some mice actually add smoothing at the higher CPI ranges to reduce jitter. This adds a small amount of latency since more data points are required for averaging out the motion.
  • RGB only in the front at the scroll wheel vs 2 separate zones (scroll wheel and back where the palm of your hand will be). Meaningless for most adults. Might be a bigger deal if you're planning on buying this as a gift for a younger relative who cares more about looking like a gamer than being one.

Everything else is shared with the Burst Pro, good and bad.

The biggest draw is probably the safe shape (big bulbous hump at the back for your palm, slowly tapering towards the front, no front flare, flat sides).

The flaws it shares with the Pro are:

  • Most people report the switches as very muted, both in sound and feel. For some, this is bad to the point where they don't want to use it. They're optical switches, so they have to add tactility separately to actuation, not all manufacturers bother to put a lot of effort into this. The result is a click that can feel a bit "fake".
  • While still very lightweight compared to older mice from only a few years ago, it's still not as light as it could be. You can see on pictures of the Pro that there are 2 shells: one transparent outer solid shell and one inner honeycomb. There's clearly been a small sacrifice to function in favour of form, likely for marketing purposes (mainstream gamers nowadays want a lightweight mouse with holes, but with RGB as well). The weight could easily have gone down to the high 50s, low 60s if function was valued above all else.

The Burst Core is incredibly good value at this price. You can buy 3 of these for the price of a Pro.

  • Don't even need a mouse but the OP sold me

  • Got one the other month, good mouse honestly. Sensor is still perfectly fine. The rebound on m1/m2 is a bit slow, but if you dont want to spam click a ton it's not a problem.

  • From my experience with Roccat, the braided sleeved cables get really tight and kinked so not having it is a plus.

    • Never mind, soz, I'm thinking of Rapoo
