2021 Marin Bobcat Trail 5 $1259 + Shipping @ Bicycles Online

50

Very good mountain bike for the price. Trail geometry, 1x11 drivetrain with 11-51 cassette, wide internal rim wheels, wide bars, short stem, thru-axle fork.

This bike is much more suitable for singletrack than most at this price point.

Shipping is $35 to Adelaide

  • Good to see they are including the pedals

    RIP Rod Marsh… 😔

Save $20 when you sign up for your first order. $25 shipping in Sydney.

  • As a mtb, it's pretty decent (purely from looking at component list).
A solid hardtail that can tackle most things comfortably.

However, I haven't been watching the pricing, but a few years ago the fork would've only be found on sub $1k bikes.

    • prices have gone up a lot since covid started.

bikes with air fork are now $1,500+

      • Wow thats insane.
        Thats an 100% markup.

I remember my cousin getting a hardtail with Suntour Raidon fork and full Deore groupset <$750 a few years back.

I did a full drivetrain swap last year and the prices of components haven't gone up by anywhere near that much..

        • Yeah, the whole market has suffered from a huge markup problem because of COVID-19. There's a very serious lack of available components, so manufacturers have had to turn lower-spec comps for the same price.

it's a decent bike, still uses a coil fork, spend a bit more for an air fork which will be much better on the trails.

Bikes online have spiked their prices. Xtrada 7s and San Quentin 1s were on sale for ~$1,100 mid last year.

    • pretty much every 2022 bike has gone up

    • Unfortunately it's the entire industry. Everything has gone up by at least 20%

It's pretty much the same situation as GPUs; thanks to covid demand is far outstripping supply.

    • I paid $1300 for an Xtrada 6 in October iirc

I’m selling it in Newcastle area if anyone is interested. Upgrading to a downhill.

  • Any thoughts on this vs the Trek Marlin 7 and Giant Talon 1? I just put a deposit down on the Giant as it's the only one in my area with any stock though.

    • +1

the Giant's a good choice as you get the air fork and a 1x drivetrain.

recommended it to a friend before we found a good deal on a 2nd hand bike.

  • I think it depends on what you’ll be using it for. The marin is a bit more upright with a longer wheelbase, with weight a bit further back, more suited to descending but slower up hills and on long distance rides. The trek is the opposite, with the giant between them. The giant is a very nice bike. The air fork on the giant is better than the coil fork on the marin and the giant has pretty decent components all round. I recently bought a specialized rockhopper which is quite similar to the trek, not really knowing what kind of riding I would be doing. As it has turned out, I mainly use it on dedicated mtb trails and I do notice the relatively forwards body position. I have changed the bars to wider ones and will be shortening and raising the stem. If I could buy again knowing what I know now, for this price I would get the Marin (with view to upgrading the fork later), or possibly spending more on the Merida big trail 400/500 or norco fluid ht. Depending on your needs, the giant might be perfect

    • Cheers dude, yeah the air fork (not that I have any idea how or what to do with it) is what sold me on the Giant. The rockhopper comp / elite were somehing else I looked at, but again, no sizes anywhere down my way.

I'm a bit similar to you, not knowing what type of riding i'll be doing. I recently got a dog and he loves long runs, so I decided to start biking to tire him out. So less downhill, but with a view to get into the down.

I think I'll ride it for a year or two and then reassess what my needs are.

The Giant will be ideal for that and definitely still capable of managing trails. The tyres look like they’re tubeless ready and setting them up as tubeless is a worth doing

        • Awesome, thanks mate.

Quick question, I'm 170cm, and covered my the high end of small (163-172cm) and the low end of medium (169-179cm).

Any recommendations on which size to go?

@wittyusername: I am definitely no expert at this. Have a look at this gmbn video and see what you think

@wittyusername: Best to go into the store and try

You could probably fit both but you may prefer one over the other

I would probably go for the medium.

@impoze: Cheers - went with the mdium in the end, took it out today and having fun!
