  • Daal is apparently one of the simplest indian dishes to make. These ready-made packets are no match to freshly made curries, infact these ones don't even taste good. Tried many such ready-made ones and found it awful

These ready-made packets are no match to freshly made curries

but they are a lot quicker if you're in a hurry.

      • +1

sometimes better than freshly made depending on who made them ……

        • true…

          I hope my wife doesn't read this…

    • +3

infact these ones don't even taste good.

If tried them and they taste fine…

Why have you even tried them if you prefer 'fresh' and it's 'simple' to make????

      • +3

That should be a no-brainer.. It's worth trying foods at different ends of the spectrum for perspective, as the balances between flavour preference, cultural authenticity, budget and time constraints are different for every family.

Personally I go both ways when it comes to cooking Indian - sometimes I go the whole 9 with butter chicken from scratch, and sometimes just stick the Masterfoods jar in the cooker with some chicken for a 3 step dinner.

        • Agree where you coming from but the preservatives added in these recipes are harmful as they contain lot of sugar so home made daal is the best.

Damn right. Its not even like 50% there.

    • I made Daal myself for the first time on the weekend, and it was pretty mediocre. Would appreciate any good recipe suggestions or links!

      • +1

That's too much to expect from a first attempt. You need all the ingredients, specially ghee(clarified butter) and coriander to make it taste better

        • Agree but not every1 keeps a pressure cooker in Australia mate @ borat

Love this relatively simple one from SBS's brilliant Food Safari (15 years ago now):

        https://www.sbs.com.au/food/recipes/toor-dal-tadka

Even with a few variations, according to what's available in the cupboard, has always come out tasty for me using this recipe as the basis.

Pair it with an indian pickle (I suggest Mango pickle or Carrot pickle when starting out). The ethnic indian grocers have great pickle selections. You can get away with Pataks as well (but it's quite average). A 1/2 teaspoon per serving is sufficient.

Daal can be eaten either with rice or flatbread with the pickle letting you spice it up a bit.

Another nice accompaniment is a salsa verde: A very simple one: diced onion, tomatoes, coriander, salt, pepper (or red pepper) + lemon juice.

You should try Bedekar Mango Pickle, you will forget all other pickles supplied in Australia.

        Some great suggestions, appreciate it!

      • Mate check this 1 out. This guy is a 5star hotel chef. Presentation in English by his Chef de Parti. https://www.sanjeevkapoor.com/recipe/Dal-Tadka.html

    • I guess it depends what you compare to. Many Indian restaurants I've eaten at do no better than these packets. Also: nothing stopping you from spicing things up if you'd just like to modify.

      • I disagree with you. Proper Restaurants apart from (take away joints or stores in the mall) will prepare fresh daal with no cream. Does cost high but well deserved spent. I bet you will like it and get some ozbargained restaurants for us. 😜

Would love to hear what Nat's What I Reckon makes of these

Remember Champions, say No to packaged daal!

But really these things are garbage compared to fresh made daal which is honestly one of the most amazing tasting meals given how basic the ingredients are and how easy to cook. Not mention how cheap it is, pennies for a bowl!

    Thanks daal…

Tried the spicy one last night. Nice flavour but I found it way too salty. Better off making your own from scratch I reckon.

Nice flavour but I found it way too salty.

Add more meat/veg and add a little bit of water when cooking…

    • +1

      Agreed…insanely salty.

What's the opposite of being an expert?

That's what jv is when it comes to daal.

    • I eat lentils at least once a week…

Some of the Spice Tailor sauces are decent (especially when on special) but I wouldn't buy a daal, as mentioned it's really easy to make yourself and super cheap. I have a freezer full of homemade daal - makes a great lunch.

Thats one way of unhealthy eating habits. Sorry but daal is kind of like starchy vegetables. You should never keep daal for more than 2 days. Not being rude but my mum used to say that.

      • +1

If freezes fine and I probably have one a fortnight - not going to kill me.

Honestly I eat a lot worse than lentil curry!

  • Not a big fan of the vegetarian ones.
Really liked the rest of the range though, shame it's not on sale too.
Edit: and yes I did try to put meat in it.

    • +1

Is any of Spice Tailor daals or curries not vegetarian?

      • Part of the range is aimed at mixing with meat.
They don't come with the meat tho.
For instance butter chicken on sale, but not 50% on sale

Is this a good option to have while watching videos of how can she slap.

  • I really like these, quick, easy & healthy meals, especially in my househould where there is almost always cooked rice in the fridge ready to be easily warmed up.

  • I find their pastes are fair tastier than the simmer sauce kits. Also great for family camping meals.

  • Have never heard of daal before. Looks like I've got some research to do.

    • Have you not been to an Indian restaurant before?

  • They are all gone

Quality product and very, very delicious!
