Selecting New Internet Service Provider

We will be moving in the coming weeks to a Brisbane southern suburb. I am trying to figure out which ISP is the best option for internet. I have checked and confirmed that nbn is available at the property. Looking at whistleout, they seem to reckon Superloop is the best option. I was looking then looking at signing up to their “home nbn fast unlimited” plan which is 100/20. However looking at their Product Review stats they seem to have a lot of outages and their customer service is quite poor. Would anyone have any recommendations for a decent ISP?

    Aussie Broadband.

Use referral system on Ozb for like $50 off your first month too

      +1 for Aussie
Only downtime I've ever had with them is planned and with plenty of notice!

You’ll likely only read about poor customer service, very rarely about good service.

What NBN tech type is it?

  • I've used Superloop and ABB - I'd say they are comparable. I wouldn't trust the negative reviews - have you ever taken the time to write a glowing review about your ISP?

Just churn through ISPs every 6 months. This is the way.

    • Very true and good advice!

I actually have for ABB, none of the others have ever deserved one. Their call centre is amazing, they will let you speak and are genuinely interested in solving your issues rather than just blaming it on another department/NBN/your modem/weather/etc. or trying to make you give up. Compare this to my experience with Telstra where rather than listen to me they insisted on running through their checklist of actions, half of which I had already done and half of which were obviously irrelevant to the issue I had. I spent 20 minutes talking to the Telstra staff member just to get my password reset which immediately resolved the issue.

In saying all that, I left ABB a while ago when they raised their prices and I'm currently with LetsBeMates whose quality of connection has been comparable to ABB. Thankfully I haven't needed to deal with their customer service but I believe they are Australian based at least. Planning to move to another ISP soon though to take advantage of some of the free month deals.

Most frustrating is when Telstra turn off the phone lines and force you to use the SMS service. Takes a full 24 hours just to get past POI and router restarts. ABB and Telstra customer service are worlds apart.

  • I do the ABB - Superloop shuffle every 6 months. For me ABB has been more consistent. Didn't have a single outage with ABB but Superloop is considerably cheaper.

    • Yes there is a bit of a price difference between the two. Super loop also has a special for an Amazon eero 6, which I can use.

Why not do the ABB-Exetel shuffle? Exetel are the "premium" brand for Superloop now. Which just feels weird knowing where Exetel used to be positioned ~10 years ago.

    • I tried to do the 6 monthly swaps to save some $$ but also found that Superloop doesn't provide the same speeds on their Ultrafast plans the same way Aussie does in my area.

AussieBB will let me pull 850+ Mbps any time of day
Superloop only averages about 400 Mbps peak and 600ish off-peak
      This was on FTTP tech.

Ping spikes were non-existent to me on Aussie, but did happen a few times a night on Superloop. (sometimes up to 120ms from Adelaide to Sydney)

I don't have a bias (I really wanted Superloop to be as good but for me it just didn't perform as well. (Elizabeth, SA - POI)

  • Reasonably happy Superloop customer here.

Minimal outages - only 1 unplanned outage that I can recall, and only a handful of planned outages (and generally early morning hours - i.e. 2am)
Bills are attached to notification email - I always hate the ones that say your invoice is available. Just attach it to the god damn email, since I'll keep that but I won't be able to access your link after x time or I'm no longer a customer.

I've only contacted support a handful of times, and tbh I'm not overly happy with it. One contact that I made they never responded to - I got the automated ticket response, and followed up on that after a couple of weeks, but never got anything else back.

And they've changed their pricing so the plan I'm on is actually available for less (and even less with their current promotion); but that's pretty standard for most companies so I don't think that's a reason not to go with them. I did recently however get a referral bonus (through OzBargain), so I've got that going for me, which is nice.

One of the reasons I originally picked Superloop is that they have their own network. Superloop maintain their own connections within Australia and also have some of their own international connections. Aussie Broadband is Telstra Wholesale. Again, this isn't really a great reason to choose one of the other, but it mattered to me.

If you are a CommBank customer, more.com.au is offering 30% for the first 12 months.

  • i would go superloop, it's supposed to have slightly better international routing than ABB (national is about the same) and it is 10 dollars cheaper for 100/20. I've had a few outages with ABB (most unplanned) and if i get another one, i'm switching.

Sign up to who ever you want so long as:
    1) you are not on a contract for 6,12 etc months
    2) have to use their modem
    3) They require/use VLAN tagging as it may affect the equipment you can use
    4) The cost is what you are okay with

This way if you find they suck then you can move without any additional costs. You will have to pay the the month and maybe an additional 30 days depending on who you go with.
