do you have to have it plugged in to use the auto close function?
Yeah, has to be powered (it works by the sensor). If it works the same as mine (different brand), has to be powered to remove your phone as well (make sure to remove your phone before turning the car off, or before the cut-off to power from when you switch your car off!).
We often get caught having to switch the car back on to remove the phone! 🤦♂️

I've got one that looks identical to this. Personal preference, but the loud whirring it makes whenever I use it and turn on the car annoys me.
I'd much rather get a mount that clamps down when you drop the phone down
