Quick note that this is the "S" model, a cut down version of the original AX86U.

    • 1x USB 2.0 and 1x USB 3.0 vs 2 x USB 3.0
    • Dual core vs Quad cpu
    • 512mb RAM vs 1gb

and multi-gig port on the 86U whereas it's missing on the S

    • do we need multi-gig port in Aus tho?

The 82U has 1xUSB 3.0, tri-core CPU, and 512mb ram. Has the same wifi 6 and game mode rubbish as this one.

Apart from looking like a spaceship, it's arguably better than the 86S, can be had for <$300 on sale.

The RT-AX3000 aka 58U seems like it has the same internals but without the rgb, so naturally it can be had for $50 less

    • i was about to post this, but i thought i would check comments first, well done.

Just beware that this is RT-AX86S (different from the RT-AX86U that is OOS now). S is newer but has less to offer than the RT-AX86U.

Thanks OP for the crystal-clear explanation.

I looked at that model but went with the Asus AX3000 for $255. Not quite as good in some areas but solid for the price. https://www.computeralliance.com.au/asus-rt-ax3000-dual-band…

Yeah got the AX3000 too and it's been rock solid. Price matched at OW + discounted gift cards took it down to about 240

This is basically the 86U but with everything desirable removed

Looks like this S model is not supported to run the Merlin firmware everyone uses

    • +2

Following the change log, it seems to be supported since the version 386.4 (1-Jan-2022)
